The frozen plateau slowly gave way to sloping hills of packed snow and dark stone. Far below, beyond the white valleys, the forest stretched like a sea of shadow and green. Towering pines rose into the morning sky, their branches heavy with frost, swaying gently as the wind whispered through them.
For the first time since leaving the mountain, the air felt calmer.
But none of them trusted it.
Aeralyn walked at the front, the Heart of Balance floating beside her shoulder like a miniature sun. Its warm glow reflected across the snow and cast golden light across their path.
Behind her, Caelum kept his hands half raised, frost magic swirling quietly around his fingers in case of danger.
Rovan walked beside Teren, spear resting on his shoulder, though his eyes constantly scanned the distance.
Lysa moved like a ghost at the edge of their formation, her bow ready, her gaze fixed on the tree line ahead.
"Something about that forest bothers me," Teren muttered.
Rovan smirked. "Everything bothers you."
"No," Teren insisted, lowering his voice. "I mean it. The mountain tried to kill us. Those hunters tried to kill us. But the forest…" He hesitated.
"…feels like it's watching," he finished.
Aeralyn didn't answer immediately.
Because he was right.
As they drew closer to the towering trees, the wind seemed to quiet. The distant sound of birds disappeared. Even the crunch of their boots in the snow seemed muffled.
The Heart pulsed once.
Slowly.
Then again.
Aeralyn frowned slightly.
"It senses something."
Caelum stepped closer to her. "Danger?"
"I'm not sure," she said softly. "But the Heart reacts to balance… and imbalance."
Rovan tightened his grip on his spear.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning something in that forest is disturbing the balance of magic."
Lysa stopped suddenly near the tree line.
"Tracks," she said.
Everyone gathered around.
The snow beneath the pines was disturbed by dozens of footprints. Unlike the hunters they had fought earlier, these were deeper and heavier.
Armored soldiers.
And many of them.
Rovan knelt beside the tracks.
"These are fresh."
Teren swallowed.
"How fresh?"
"Hours."
Caelum's expression hardened.
"They're searching."
"For us," Aeralyn said quietly.
The Heart pulsed again.
Brighter.
Almost urgently.
---
They entered the forest cautiously.
Tall pine trees blocked most of the sunlight, casting long shadows across the snow-covered ground. Frost clung to branches like delicate glass.
The deeper they walked, the darker the forest became.
The air felt thicker here.
Heavier.
Aeralyn felt the Heart vibrating slightly beside her.
"Something's wrong," she whispered.
Suddenly—
A sharp whistle cut through the air.
Lysa moved instantly.
"Down!"
Arrows slammed into the trees where they had been standing.
More whistles followed.
Dozens of armored figures emerged from the forest shadows, surrounding them in a wide circle.
Their armor was black steel, etched with glowing blue runes.
Each soldier carried a long spear or curved blade.
At their center stepped a tall figure cloaked in silver armor, a dark cape trailing behind him.
His helmet hid his face, but his voice carried cold authority.
"So."
"You finally came down from the mountain."
Caelum's eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?"
The armored figure removed his helmet.
His hair was silver-white, his eyes icy blue.
A cruel smile curved his lips.
"Commander Valric," he said calmly.
"General of the Northern Dominion."
Rovan cursed under his breath.
"I was hoping we wouldn't run into Dominion soldiers."
Valric's gaze moved to the glowing crystal floating beside Aeralyn.
His smile widened.
"And there it is."
"The Heart of Balance."
The soldiers tightened their circle.
Teren whispered nervously.
"Please tell me we can outrun them."
Rovan shook his head slowly.
"Not this many."
Valric stepped forward.
"You've caused quite a disturbance," he said casually. "The Core awakening. The collapse of the Devourer."
He tilted his head slightly.
"You have no idea what you've unleashed."
Aeralyn lifted her chin.
"And you do?"
Valric chuckled.
"More than you think."
His eyes locked onto the Heart.
"That artifact belongs to the Dominion."
"It always has."
Caelum stepped forward.
"You're wrong."
"The Heart belongs to no kingdom."
Valric's smile disappeared.
"That is where you are mistaken, prince."
The word prince hung in the air.
Rovan stiffened.
"You know who he is?"
Valric's eyes gleamed.
"Oh yes."
"The lost Prince of Winterfall."
Caelum's jaw tightened.
"So this is about power."
Valric shrugged slightly.
"Everything is about power."
His hand lifted.
"Take the Heart."
The soldiers surged forward.
---
The battle exploded instantly.
Lysa's arrows flew like lightning, striking the first soldiers before they reached them.
Rovan charged with a roar, spear sweeping wide and knocking two attackers aside.
Teren barely dodged a blade and swung his sword wildly.
Caelum's frost magic erupted in sharp spikes, freezing several soldiers mid-step.
But there were too many.
Valric watched calmly from the center of the battlefield.
Aeralyn felt the Heart pulse rapidly beside her.
It was reacting again.
Stronger than before.
Golden light spilled across the forest floor.
The soldiers hesitated.
The Heart rose higher into the air.
Aeralyn raised her hands instinctively.
Warm energy flowed through her arms.
The forest seemed to respond.
Branches rustled.
Wind stirred.
Valric frowned.
"What are you doing?"
"I don't know," Aeralyn admitted.
"But the Heart does."
The golden light expanded.
The snow beneath their feet began to glow faintly.
Roots shifted beneath the ground.
The forest itself was waking.
Suddenly—
Massive roots burst from the snow, slamming into Dominion soldiers and throwing them aside.
Trees groaned as their branches twisted, blocking paths and knocking weapons away.
The forest was fighting back.
Valric's calm expression finally cracked.
"Impossible."
Aeralyn stood at the center of the glowing light, the Heart floating above her hands.
Her voice carried across the battlefield.
"You disturb the balance of this land."
"The forest knows it."
Golden energy surged outward in a powerful wave.
Dominion soldiers were thrown backward through the snow.
Rovan laughed loudly.
"Now that's what I'm talking about!"
Lysa grinned as she fired another arrow.
Caelum stepped beside Aeralyn, frost magic swirling with her golden light.
The two energies merged again—warmth and winter.
Valric drew his sword slowly.
The blade glowed with deep blue energy.
"So."
"You're stronger than I expected."
He pointed the blade toward Aeralyn.
"But the Dominion does not retreat."
His armor began glowing with powerful runes.
Magic surged around him.
Even the forest roots recoiled.
Rovan stepped forward beside Aeralyn.
"Looks like the real fight starts now."
Valric charged.
Blue lightning exploded across the battlefield.
Caelum met him head-on, ice clashing against the glowing blade.
The impact shook the forest.
Aeralyn raised the Heart higher.
Golden light erupted once more.
The forest roared around them.
Branches snapped.
Roots surged.
Snow spiraled into the air.
The battle for the Heart of Balance had begun.
And this time—
The entire forest had chosen a side.
