Chapter 4 - Chapter 4:Butcher at work

MISTFALL: AWAKENING

Chapter 13: Butcher's Work

The silence after killing something was heavier than the fight itself.

James stood over the dire wolf's corpse for a long time before he moved.

The iron scent of blood thickened the damp air. The torches crackled faintly, their green flames bending slightly toward the body as if drawn to it.

He swallowed.

He had never cut anything bigger than steak before.

But starvation was a patient executioner.

And hunger was already gnawing at him.

He dragged the wolf's body into the alcove where he'd found the mace. The corpse was dense, heavy with muscle. A predator through and through.

"Okay…" he muttered to himself. "Think."

Survival videos. Camping clips. Fragments of biology class.

He found a jagged shard of stone among the rubble and tested its edge.

Not ideal.

But sharp enough.

The first cut was the hardest.

The skin resisted.

His hands shook.

But once he forced through fur and hide, something inside him numbed.

His breathing steadied. Movements became methodical.

Peel the pelt.

Separate muscle from bone.

Avoid rupturing organs.

The dungeon watched.

Time slipped strangely around him. He felt no fatigue from the labor, only a strange clarity, as if this place rewarded function over emotion.

When he split the ribcage, his stone blade struck something solid.

A crystalline chime rang faintly.

James paused.

There, nestled near the sternum, embedded not in flesh, but in something like a secondary sac near the heart, was a shard of glowing green crystal.

It pulsed faintly.

Mana.

Denser than the air.

Denser than anything he had yet felt.

His interface flared violently.

[Mana Crystal Detected]

Source: Dungeon-Generated Beast

Quality: Minor Core Fragment

Recommendation: Consume

Effect: Level Advancement + System Unlock

He stared at it.

"Consume… how?"

The crystal vibrated once in response.

A prompt appeared.

Place Core Against Sternum. Confirm Assimilation.

He hesitated only a moment.

The world above was ending.

If this dungeon had rules

He would learn them.

James pressed the crystal against his chest.

"Confirm."

The shard liquefied instantly.

Cold fire surged through his ribs.

His spine arched as mana flooded his veins like liquid lightning. Not painful just overwhelming and Expansive.

The dungeon trembled.

And the interface transformed.

LEVEL UP

Level 2 Achieved

The symbols reorganized themselves into something clearer

Like a hybrid of grimoires and a game UI.

He inhaled sharply.

His body felt… reinforced.

Denser muscle fiber.

Sharper senses.

The dungeon's mana currents were no longer faint threads, they were visible streams weaving through the architecture.

Another tab unfolded.

AWAKENED ABILITY

Riftborne — Spatial Fracture (Minor)

Temporary portal redirection (unstable)

Warning:

Excessive use increases Dimensional Instability.

Unknown entities may detect rift signatures.

His throat dried.

So that's what he had done upstairs.

He hadn't created something new.

He had interfered with something already fragile.

Another section unlocked.

James stared at the final line.

Retreat: Unavailable.

"So I can't leave…" he whispered.

The torches flickered violently.

A low vibration pulsed through the stone beneath his feet, as if the dungeon responded to his realization.

He was not hiding here.

He was trapped here.

And this place had structure.

Ten floors.

Unknown number of bosses.

Kill everything to advance.

It wasn't invasion.

It was evaluation.

A testing ground.

Another panel slid open.

PASSIVE TRAIT UNLOCKED

Predator Assimilation (Minor)

Absorbing mana cores strengthens physical development beyond baseline human limits.

James looked down at the dismembered dire wolf.

He no longer felt sick.

He felt… efficient.

He moved to gather wood-like fungal growth from the cavern walls.

The green torch flames could be transferred; he'd already noticed they burned without consuming visible fuel.

He skewered strips of wolf meat over an improvised spit.

The scent of roasting flesh filled the chamber.

He ate slowly.

Each bite restored warmth to his limbs.

Another quiet notification appeared.

Vitality Stabilized

Minor Regeneration Enhanced

Time passed.

He didn't feel the hours.

He didn't feel the days.

Above ground, governments collapsed into regional control blocs.

Entire cities vanished beneath expanding dimensional overlays.

A full twenty-four hours passed outside.

Inside the dungeon,

Thirty days unfolded.

James trained.

He tested his strength against stone pillars.

He practiced short bursts of Spatial Fracture, learning the edge of his limits.

He hunted smaller creatures lurking in side corridors, pale cave-hounds, mana-fed vermin, things with too many joints.

Each kill sharpened him.

Each core strengthened him.

He did not know that a month had passed.

He did not know the sky above was no longer consistently blue.

He only knew,

He had cleared most of Floor One.

And something deeper had begun to move.

From beyond a massive sealed stone door at the far end of the cavern complex came a rhythmic thud.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

The Boss had noticed him.

His interface pulsed once more.

Floor 1 Cleared: 87%

Boss Chamber Unlocked Upon Completion

James tightened his grip on the mace.

His Strength stat pulsed faintly in the corner of his vision.

No.

It had grown again.

He exhaled slowly.

He had run once.

He would not run again.

Deep beneath him,

The ancient presence that tasted his blood stirred more fully.

And somewhere above,

Reality tore wide open over three continents at once.

The merging had only just begun.
