Deep inside the bunker, the control room remained calm but watchful.
Soft lights illuminated the walls lined with surveillance monitors, each screen displaying a different view of the forest above. Small cameras, carefully hidden among rocks, trees, and natural terrain, sent constant video feeds into the room. The system had been designed to detect threats long before they reached the bunker.
Michael sat in front of the central console, his eyes moving slowly from one monitor to another. Beside him stood Federick, Luis's father, watching the screens with quiet concentration.
Only a short while earlier, Federick had finished speaking with Luis through the satellite phone. The call had brought them some relief. Mia and Luis had safely reached the location Pablo had given them. But Pablo had not arrived yet.
Federick exhaled slowly as he folded his arms across his chest. "They made it to the meeting point," he said quietly.
Michael nodded, still focused on the monitors.
"That's good."
Federick glanced at the digital clock mounted above the screens. "They said they'll wait inside the vehicle until Pablo arrives."
Michael leaned back slightly in his chair. "That's the safest choice."
Federick gave a faint nod. "They sounded calm."
Michael allowed himself a small breath of relief. "Luis knows what he's doing. And Mia has become stronger than most people realize."
Federick smiled faintly. "Yes. She has."
But even knowing their children had reached their destination safely did not remove the quiet worry that lingered in both fathers' minds. Outside the bunker, the world was still dangerous.
Michael switched to another camera feed, checking the forest slope that overlooked the hidden bunker entrance. The trees swayed gently in the wind. Sunlight filtered through the branches, creating shifting shadows across the forest floor. Everything looked normal. Federick stepped closer to the console. "They'll probably head back once they meet Pablo."
Michael nodded. "Hopefully before dark."
Neither of them wanted Mia and Luis traveling at night. The infected tended to wander more aggressively in darkness, and visibility became much worse. Michael switched to another camera angle.
Then suddenly—
He leaned forward. "Wait."
Federick straightened immediately. "What?"
Michael pointed toward the monitor. "There."
A figure appeared between the trees. A woman. She moved carefully through the forest, stepping slowly while scanning the surroundings.
Michael's voice lowered. "That's not an infected."
Federick leaned closer to the screen, studying her movements. The woman paused frequently, turning her head as if examining the environment around her.
"Infected don't move like that," Federick said quietly.
Michael nodded. "No. She's looking for something."
The woman stepped closer to the clearing near the hidden bunker entrance. She crouched briefly, touching the ground before standing again. Then another figure appeared. A man stepped out from behind a nearby tree. Federick's expression hardened slightly. "So she's not alone."
Michael watched the monitor carefully as the man approached the woman. From the camera angle, it was clear they were speaking to each other, though the bunker's surveillance system did not capture their voices.
Both of them looked around the forest again.
Observing, studying.
Michael felt a slow uneasiness building in his chest. "They're checking the place."
Federick frowned. "Do you recognize them?"
Michael shook his head. "No."
Neither of them had seen these two before. The woman walked a few steps closer to the clearing again while the man remained slightly behind her, scanning the trees as if keeping watch.
Federick spoke quietly. "Maybe they noticed something earlier."
Michael immediately understood what he meant. "This morning when Mia and Luis left… the garage door opened."
Federick nodded slowly. "If these two were nearby, they might have seen it."
Michael kept his eyes on the monitor. The woman crouched again, brushing aside some leaves and dirt from the ground. Tire marks, the SUV had passed through that exact spot earlier.
Federick muttered under his breath. "That could lead them here."
Michael remained silent, watching carefully.
The woman stood and gestured toward the direction of the bunker entrance. The man walked closer to her, both of them staring at the ground where the hidden door lay concealed beneath soil and vegetation.
Federick spoke quietly. "They're suspicious."
Michael nodded slowly. "Yes."
Neither of them moved for several seconds as they watched the strangers continue examining the area.
Finally Michael spoke again. "Let's just observe them for now."
Federick looked at him. "You don't want to confront them?"
Michael shook his head. "Not yet."
He gestured toward the monitor. "We don't know if they have others with them."
Federick considered that. Many survivor groups sent scouts first before revealing themselves.
Michael continued watching the screens. "Let's hope they leave after a while."
Federick sighed quietly. "And hopefully they're gone before Mia and Luis come back."
Michael nodded. "Yes."
If their children returned while strangers were still investigating the bunker's surroundings, the hidden refuge might be exposed immediately.
Federick straightened. "I'll inform Olivia and Helen."
Michael nodded without looking away from the monitors. "They should know."
Federick turned and walked toward the control room door, leaving to inform their wives about the unexpected visitors. Michael remained seated in front of the surveillance system. His eyes moved from one camera feed to another, checking the road, the forest paths, and the surrounding hills. So far he could only see the two strangers but that didn't mean they were alone. On the main screen, the man walked closer toward the exact location of the hidden bunker entrance.
Michael felt his grip tighten slightly on the edge of the console. Ithe stranger stepped just a little farther, he might notice something unusual about the ground.
The camouflage was good but no disguise was perfect. The man stopped, looked around slowly then crouched down, examining the dirt.
Michael held his breath. A few seconds passed. Then the man stood again and walked back toward the woman. Michael finally exhaled quietly. For now, the bunker remained undiscovered.
Moments later, Federick returned to the control room. "They know," he said softly.
Michael glanced back briefly. "How did they react?"
"Worried," Federick replied. "But calm."
Michael nodded. "That's good."
Federick stepped beside him again and looked at the screens. The two strangers were still walking slowly around the area, occasionally stopping to look toward the clearing.
"They're definitely scouting," Federick said.
Michael agreed. "Yes."
For several minutes both men simply watched the monitors. Then Federick asked the question both of them were thinking.
"What if Mia and Luis come back while those two are still here?"
Michael's expression hardened slightly. "That's exactly what I'm worried about."
Because if the bunker door opened while strangers were nearby… Their hidden sanctuary might no longer remain hidden.
