Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – The Distance That Cuts

The palace felt colder.

Not because of the weather—

but because something had changed.

Irreversibly.

The Morning After

Li Xuan hadn't slept.

Not even for a moment.

He stood by the window, staring out at the pale morning sky, his fingers resting lightly against his collar—

right where Shen Lian had grabbed him.

Where everything had broken.

A faint mark still remained.

He didn't hide it.

Silence

There were no bells that night.

None.

And somehow—

that silence was louder than anything before.

In the Court

The hall was alive with quiet tension.

Ministers spoke in careful tones. Eyes shifted. Whispers moved like shadows.

Li Xuan stepped into the court like nothing had happened.

Like he was still the same careless prince.

But something in his presence had changed.

Sharper.

Colder.

More dangerous.

The Crown Prince noticed.

Of course he did.

"You seem… distracted, Fourth Brother," he said lightly.

Li Xuan smiled.

"Do I?"

Their eyes met.

A silent challenge.

Pressure Builds

"The investigation continues," the Crown Prince added."We're getting closer."

Li Xuan didn't react.

"Then I wish you success."

A pause.

Then the Crown Prince leaned slightly closer.

"For your sake… I hope we don't find anything."

Not a threat.

But close enough.

Elsewhere…

Shen Lian stood alone on a rooftop.

Far from the palace.

Far from him.

The wind moved through his veil, the silver bells barely making a sound.

He hadn't gone back.

Not after last night.

Not after that moment.

His fingers tightened around his fan.

"…That shouldn't have happened."

But the memory refused to fade.

The way Li Xuan didn't pull away.

The way he responded.

The way—

No.

He cut the thought off.

Avoidance

Days passed.

No meetings.

No accidental encounters.

No silver bells in the night.

Li Xuan noticed.

Of course he did.

But he didn't search.

Not openly.

Because He Was Waiting

The fourth night—

the bells returned.

Jing.

Soft.

Careful.

Almost… hesitant.

Li Xuan was already outside.

Already waiting.

The Distance is Different Now

Shen Lian stepped into the garden.

But he didn't come close.

Not this time.

"You shouldn't be here," he said.

The same words.

But they sounded different now.

Weaker.

Or maybe heavier.

The Tension Returns Harder

"You disappeared," Li Xuan said.

"Yes."

"Without a word."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Are you going to do that again?"

Shen Lian didn't answer.

The Push Away (Harder This Time)

"This shouldn't continue," Shen Lian said.

Li Xuan stepped forward.

"It already has."

"You know what I mean."

"Say it clearly."

Shen Lian's voice dropped.

"We stop."

Silence.

Li Xuan Doesn't Accept It

"No."

The word came immediately.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Shen Lian's eyes sharpened.

"You don't get to decide that."

"I do if it involves me."

"This will destroy you."

Li Xuan's gaze didn't waver.

"Then let it."

The Emotional Cut

For the first time—

Shen Lian looked away.

Not out of indifference.

But because he couldn't hold that gaze.

"That's exactly why I have to end this," he said quietly.

Li Xuan stepped closer again.

Now the distance was small.

Too small.

"You're ending something you started," he said.

"I didn't start it."

"Yes, you did."

A beat.

Then lower—

"You just didn't expect it to go this far."

The Truth He Can't Deny

Shen Lian's fingers tightened.

Because that—

was true.

The Almost Again (But Worse)

The space between them tightened.

Not soft.

Not warm.

Sharp.

Tense.

Unresolved.

Li Xuan's voice dropped:

"You kissed me."

Shen Lian's breath hitched.

"You responded."

That landed deeper.

The Breaking Line

"This is a mistake," Shen Lian said.

"No."

"It is."

"It isn't."

"It will become one."

Li Xuan stepped even closer.

"Then let it."

But This Time—He Walks Away

Shen Lian pulled back.

Fast.

Decisive.

Before it could happen again.

Before he lost control again.

"This ends here," he said.

And this time—

he meant it.

End Scene

He turned—

and disappeared into the night.

No hesitation.

No pause.

No looking back.

Li Xuan Alone

The garden fell silent again.

But this time—

it wasn't empty.

It was tense.

Heavy.

Filled with something unresolved.

Li Xuan stood there for a long moment.

Then slowly—

he smiled.

Not soft.

Not hurt.

Something darker.

Something more certain.

"You think you can end this?"

A quiet pause.

Then—

"Try."
