Chapter 43 - Episode 42 - The Glass Ceiling

The broadcast began without interruption this time—no emergency banners, no piercing red warnings. It was something far more chilling: deliberate, state-sanctioned programming.

FORMAL AUTHORITY CLASSIFICATION – REGULATED ORDER

In Aurora's second-floor lounge, Mira leaned forward, her eyes glued to the screen. "They're really doing a showcase."

"Yes," Orion said calmly, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the monitor. "They're establishing precedent."

The emblem of the Central Authority Bureau dissolved, replaced by a reinforced testing chamber of cold steel and observation glass. An official stepped into the frame. "To ensure structural integrity among awakened collectives, the Authority Classification System will now demonstrate state-certified metrics using members of the Regulated Order."

The first to enter the chamber was Caelum Richter. He was tall and sharp-eyed, with white-blue static already flickering faintly along his sleeves like living wire.

"Authority: Thor – Sovereign Thunder."

The Appraiser gave a curt nod. "Begin."

Lightning struck downward, grounding into reinforced conductors. It wasn't wild or erratic; it moved in controlled vertical arcs that split and rejoined like branching veins. The digital overlays flickered to life:

Energy Density: High

Stability: Moderate

Expansion Potential: Elevated

Rank: S+

Polite applause rippled through the broadcast.

Next was Helena Vireaux, composed and measured. "Authority: Athena – Tactical Dominion." Golden geometric sigils unfolded in layered formations around her, predictive shield matrices rotating in overlapping arcs.

Energy Density: High

Stability Index: High

Projection Potential: Moderate

Rank: S+

Then came Viktor Draeg. "Authority: Guan Yu – Martial Sovereign." The chamber floor trembled as gravity compressed in localized pockets, the steel walls groaning under the weight of concentrated force.

Energy Density: Moderate

Stability: High

Expansion Potential: Limited

Rank: A

Finally, Elias Verdan stepped forward. A silver shimmer danced faintly around him—no arrogance, no hesitation. "Authority: Odin – Allfather's Sight."

The chamber dimmed slightly as silver threads unfurled like runic patterns across unseen layers of reality. The air felt deeper—not heavier, but profoundly deeper. The digital overlays rose higher than any that had come before.

Energy Density: Exceptional

Cognitive Expansion: Advanced

Stability Index: Extremely High

Rank: SS

The banner flashed across the screen in bold, silver letters: ELIAS VERDAN – SS.

The official addressed the audience, his voice ringing with authority. "The Regulated Order now stands as a verified high-structure guild, containing one SS-ranked Authority and multiple S-tier awakened."

The hierarchy had been visualized, codified, and legitimized.

In the Aurora building, Mira exhaled slowly. "They're clean."

"Yes," Seris said softly.

"Disciplined," Garrick added, his arms crossed tightly.

Lucien watched Elias on the screen, his gaze penetrating. "He knew."

"Knew what?" Mira asked.

"That he'd be the ceiling."

Nox didn't speak, but his eyes were sharp—dangerously sharp.

Later, in Conference Room 7, away from the cameras and the applause, Elias stood across from a Bureau official.

"You understand the narrative shift," the official said.

"Yes."

"The Regulated Order now represents stability."

Elias's silver gaze remained steady. "And independent guilds represent uncertainty."

"For now." The official studied him closely. "Aurora Covenant has filed for registration."

Elias's eyes flickered slightly at the mention of the name. "They were always going to."

"You've observed them?"

"From a distance."

"And?"

Elias paused, choosing his words with care. "They are not chaotic."

The official's tone cooled. "That is not the question."

"They are not disorganized either," Elias countered.

A small silence stretched between them. The official stepped closer. "If they lack an S-ranked Authority, registration will be denied."

"And if they do not?"

The official's expression remained a mask. "Then the hierarchy expands."

Elias turned slightly toward the window, looking out at the city lights. He saw his silver reflection in the glass, but something felt... off. Earlier, for a fraction of a second when Aurora's name was spoken during the broadcast, he had felt a distortion. Not a surge of power, not a hostile aura, but an absence. Like a blind spot in his perception. It unsettled him, though he refused to let it show.

"You will remain neutral," the official said.

"Yes."

But Elias's mind was already elsewhere. What was that?

Elsewhere, in a containment room where fluorescent lights hummed a low, lonely tune, Kairos sat on a metal bench. The broadcast replayed silently on a monitor overhead. He watched Caelum's lightning, Helena's shields, and Elias's silver threads.

SS. S+. S+. A. Hierarchy.

When the official mentioned that Aurora Covenant had filed for evaluation, Kairos's fingers twitched. A small ember flared in his palm. He clenched his fist immediately, smothering it. The ember dimmed, but this time, he didn't look afraid. He looked... attentive.

Back at Aurora, Orion lowered the volume on the television. "They've formalized it."

"Yes," Kaida said.

Garrick adjusted his stance. "They're expecting us next."

Lucien stood slowly, his presence filling the room. "They won't have to wait long."

Mira blinked. "...We're going?"

Lucien's expression softened ever so slightly. "Of course."

Nox watched him carefully, a silent shadow by his side. And somewhere, deep in Elias's silver perception, that blind spot lingered—unmeasured, unranked, and unregistered.
