Chapter 76 - Chapter Seventy-Six:THE MISSING PIECE

Chicago feels different the moment Lina steps into it.

Not unfamiliar.

Just… sharper.

Like the city knows something she doesn't yet.

The wind cuts colder against her skin as she steps out of the car, her coat pulled tighter around her. Traffic hums. Lights flicker. Everything moves like normal.

But nothing feels normal.

Because now there's a file in her bag.

And answers she hasn't opened fully.

She doesn't go to her room.

Not first.

Instead, she heads straight to the hotel lounge, dropping into a chair near the window. Her fingers slide into her bag, pulling the folder back out.

For a second, she just stares at it.

Then she opens it again.

Names.

Dates.

Connections.

Her eyes move faster this time, scanning deeper, sharper

until they stop.

Victor Hale.

Daniel Carter.

The same document.

The same origin point.

Her breath slows.

"No…" she murmurs under her breath.

But the evidence doesn't shift.

It doesn't soften.

It sits there—clear, structured, undeniable.

Same father.

Different mothers.

Years of separation.

No contact.

No relationship.

Stepbrothers.

The word forms slowly in her mind, like something her brain doesn't want to accept.

And suddenly

everything makes sense.

The tension.

The instinct.

The way they looked at each other like something was already there, even before they understood why.

Lina leans back slightly, the weight of it settling in.

"This is bad," she whispers.

Not because of them.

But because of her.

Her phone buzzes.

She almost ignores it.

Almost.

But when she looks

her chest tightens.

Victor.

She answers before she can think better of it.

"What is it?"

No greeting.

No softness.

Just direct.

There's a pause on the other end.

Then—

"You're in Chicago."

Not a question.

Her brows pull together. "How do you—"

"I told you," he cuts in. "I don't leave things unfinished."

Her grip tightens slightly around the phone.

"You've been following me?"

"No."

A beat.

"I've been ahead of you."

That sends something uneasy down her spine.

Lina stands slowly, the file still in her hand.

"There's something you need to see," she says.

Silence.

Then

"I already found it."

Her heart stops.

"What?"

Victor's voice lowers.

"Tell me what your version says."

Her pulse spikes now.

Because if he already knows

then this isn't just a discovery.

It's a collision.

"They're connected," she says carefully. "You and Daniel."

Another pause.

"He's my stepbrother," Victor says.

Just like that.

No hesitation.

No disbelief.

Just truth.

Lina closes her eyes briefly.

"So you knew."

"I confirmed it today."

Her chest tightens.

"Does he know?"

"No."

That changes everything.

Lina exhales sharply, running a hand through her hair.

"This is a mess."

"No," Victor replies.

"It's clarity."

Her eyes snap open.

"Clarity?"

"Yes."

His voice is steady. Controlled.

Dangerous.

"Now I know exactly what this is."

Her pulse jumps.

"And what is it?"

A beat.

Then

"A problem I'm not walking away from."

The words land hard.

Because this isn't hesitation.

This isn't confusion.

Victor has already chosen.

"Where are you?" he asks.

Lina hesitates.

Just for a second.

Then

"Hotel lounge."

"I'm five minutes away."

The line goes dead.

Lina lowers the phone slowly, her heart beating faster now.

Because this

this is about to happen.

For real.

Daniel walks in three minutes later.

Of course he does.

Like the night is determined to collapse everything at once.

Lina sees him the moment he enters.

And something inside her tightens.

He looks different.

Not softer.

Not uncertain.

Focused.

Intentional.

Like he's already decided something too.

He spots her.

Walks over.

Stops just in front of her.

"We need to talk."

Her breath catches slightly.

"About what?"

Daniel's gaze drops briefly to the file in her hand.

Then back to her face.

"About why it feels like everything is about to change."

The words hit too close.

Too accurate.

Lina swallows.

"You don't know the half of it."

"Then tell me."

Before she can respond—

a presence shifts behind him.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Victor.

Of course.

He steps into view slowly, his gaze locking onto Daniel like the space between them doesn't exist.

And this time

there's no confusion.

No vague tension.

Just recognition.

Daniel turns.

Their eyes meet.

And something clicks instantly.

Not memory.

Not fully.

But something deeper.

Something instinctive.

"You," Daniel says slowly.

Victor's expression hardens.

"Yeah."

Silence falls.

Sharp.

Loaded.

Lina feels it building—fast, dangerous, inevitable.

This is it.

The moment everything breaks open.

And none of them are walking out of it the same.
