Chapter 67 - The Path She Left Behind

They didn't stop running.

The glowing symbols along the walls lit up one after another, guiding them through the narrow passage like a trail of stars.

Daniel's breath was uneven.

Not from exhaustion—

But from the fear of what they had just seen.

"She's losing control," he said.

Maria shook her head as she kept pace.

"No," she replied firmly. "She's holding it. There's a difference."

Another tremor shook the passage.

Dust fell from above.

"But for how long?" Daniel asked.

Maria didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

The path twisted sharply.

Deeper.

Farther than they had gone before.

The air grew heavier.

Colder.

Then suddenly—

They reached a dead end.

Or what looked like one.

A solid stone wall stood in front of them, covered in faint, worn symbols.

The glowing path ended there.

Daniel stopped.

"This doesn't make sense…"

Maria stepped closer, studying the wall.

"No," she said slowly.

"It makes perfect sense."

She traced one of the symbols with her fingers.

"It's not a dead end."

She looked at Daniel.

"It's a lock."

The symbols began to glow again.

Faint.

Responding to their presence.

Daniel's mind raced.

"Elena brought us here for a reason…"

Maria nodded.

"She wants us to open it."

Daniel hesitated.

"How? We don't have her connection."

Maria looked at the symbols again.

Then at him.

"Yes," she said quietly.

"We do."

He frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She stepped back slightly.

"You've been connected to her since the beginning," she said. "Closer than anyone."

A pause.

"This place… it might recognize that."

Daniel looked at the wall.

Uncertain.

"But what if it doesn't?"

Maria gave a small, serious smile.

"Then we find out the hard way."

Another tremor.

Stronger.

Closer.

Time was running out.

Daniel stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He raised his hand.

For a moment—

He hesitated.

Then—

He pressed it against the stone.

Nothing happened.

Silence.

Daniel's heart sank.

"I—"

Then—

A pulse.

The symbols flared to life.

Bright.

The entire wall began to glow.

Maria's eyes widened.

"It's working!"

The light spread outward—

Connecting every symbol.

Completing a pattern.

Daniel felt it then.

A warmth.

Familiar.

"Elena…" he whispered.

The wall responded.

A deep rumble echoed through the passage.

And slowly—

The stone began to move.

Grinding.

Shifting.

Opening.

A hidden doorway revealed itself.

Darkness beyond.

But not empty.

There was something inside.

A chamber.

Larger than the last.

Older.

Stronger.

At its center—

A structure.

Unlike anything they had seen before.

Not just a platform.

Not just symbols.

A complete circle.

Intricate.

Layered.

Like the core of the entire network.

Maria stepped inside slowly.

Her voice barely a whisper.

"This is it…"

Daniel followed.

His chest tight.

"This is where it all connects."

The symbols across the floor began to glow faintly—

Reacting to their presence.

But something was wrong.

At the center of the circle—

There was a break.

A missing piece.

Daniel stared at it.

"No…"

Maria's expression fell.

"That's why the network is failing…"

The realization hit them both at once.

The system wasn't just damaged.

It was incomplete.

And without that missing piece—

Elena couldn't hold the balance forever.

Another tremor shook the chamber.

Stronger now.

Urgent.

Daniel clenched his fists.

"So what do we do?"

Maria looked at the empty space in the circle.

Then slowly—

At him.

"I think…"

A pause.

"…we already found the missing piece."

Silence.

Heavy.

Daniel's heart dropped.

Because he understood.
