Mara found Nico in the study.
He was standing at the window with his back to her, phone pressed to his ear, speaking in low rapid Italian that stopped the moment she pushed the door open.
He said two more words into the phone and hung up without turning around.
"Close the door," he said.
Mara did.
Nico turned, and his eyes went to the envelope in her hand immediately, which told her he already knew it existed. She hadn't even decided yet whether she was going to show it to him.
"How," she said.
"Elena." He moved to the desk and sat. "She keeps me informed. It's not personal."
"It feels personal."
"Most things do." He held out his hand. "Let me see it."
She crossed the room and handed it over without arguing, because arguing about whether he should see it when he clearly already knew it existed felt like a waste of both their time. He read it once, quickly, and set it face down on the desk.
"He heard what happened last night," Nico said.
