Chapter 9 - Pride and tasks

The mor.

The morning sunlight spilled gently across the garden, pouring through the thin veil of mist that clung to the earth. Golden light brushed over the soil and low-growing herbs, illuminating the careful rows of vegetables that had been planted with quiet patience. Small beads of dew clung to each leaf like scattered jewels, reflecting the rising sun.

I sat on the wooden bench near the edge of the garden, watching the soil for a long moment. Carrots, leafy greens, and climbing beans stretched across neat rows, their growth humble yet purposeful. The faint scent of damp earth and the sweetness of young shoots filled the air, mingling with the soft warmth of the rising sun.

My fists tightened slightly.

I didn't want to ask for coins. Not from anyone.

Not from her.

Not from anyone in the village.

What sort of man asks a woman for money?

Pride, I reminded myself. Not merely stubbornness, but necessity. A man must prove himself. Stand on his own. Earn respect through deeds, not pleas. Strength, after all, was measured not only by the beasts one could slay, but by the ability to act with dignity in a world that demands it.

Slowly, I rose from the bench. Luminara hummed faintly in my hand, the polished blade catching the sunlight. Calm, steady, familiar—the extension of myself.

Near the stream that curved through the village, a woman knelt in her garden, tugging stubborn weeds from the soil. I approached with deliberate calm.

"Excuse me," I said. "Do you have any work that needs doing?"

She blinked, surprise flashing across her face. "Work?"

"Yes. Any task—anything that needs attention."

Her eyes flicked to the water, as if remembering something. "My son dropped his pendant in the stream… I tried, but I can't reach it myself. Could you…?"

[Task Accepted: Retrieve Lost Pendant]

The current tugged lightly at my fingers as I stepped onto the slippery stones, but I plunged my hand into the cold water and grasped the pendant. It slipped slightly under my fingers at first, but I held firm, tugging it free.

Coins were pressed into my hand as I handed the pendant back, and her voice carried across the nearby houses:

"This young man is looking for work! If anyone needs help, he can do it!"

Word spread faster than I expected. Soon a boy came running, frantic. "My goat disappears every night!"

[Task Accepted: Track and Return Missing Goat]

The trail led to the barn. Shallow claw marks intertwined with the goat's footprints, subtle disturbances hinting at forest predators brushing close to the village. I guided the goat back to the boy, noting the pattern of movement beyond the barn, fading into the underbrush. Observation and patience, I reminded myself. Precision over brute force.

The healer needed ten Moonleaf herbs. The forest behind her cottage was dense, shadows fracturing the soft sunlight. Each herb collected felt like a small victory, every careful step a lesson in stealth and observation.

Finally, a villager whispered about a barn disturbance. I drew Luminara, its faint glow slicing through the dim evening light. A small, clawed creature moved unnaturally, hissing at shadows. I nudged it away carefully, leaving it alive but removing the threat.

The village slept quietly. Shadows stretched across tilled soil. Luminara rested at my side, humming faintly. But the subtle tension remained, ripples in the stream, faint claw marks, a sense of the forest pressing in.

I crouched, resting my elbows on my knees. Coins, experience, preparation, all small steps toward a far greater objective. The Fragments of the Future.

Powerful. Ancient. Dangerous.

To seize them required more than strength,it required preparation, patience, calculation. Rushing would be fatal. The path was measured, each step deliberate. First, coins. Second, resources. Third, observation and reconnaissance. Finally ,the strike.

I let my eyes sweep the forest edge. Trees whispered with the wind, their shadows shifting like living things. Every movement, every pulse of energy, was a thread waiting to be traced. Any careless step, and the forest could betray me—or worse, something else could already be watching.

I pressed a fingertip to Luminara's hilt. The hum beneath my skin reminded me: a weapon is nothing without skill, precision, and timing. My mind traced the village tasks: the pendant in the stream, the missing goat, the Moonleaf herbs, the barn creature. Each taught a lesson: patience, careful observation, energy management, calculated strikes. Every coin earned, every XP gained, was practice for the larger goal.

I exhaled slowly. A plan began to take form. Traders could provide supplies; maps could hint at hidden paths; whispers could reveal fragments' locations. Each coin spent would be a tool, each small investment a step closer to the goal. Coins for information, for supplies, for leverage.

I crouched, tracing lines in the dirt with a stick: forest paths, village layouts, streams, predator zones. Each mark a plan, each pause a consideration. Precision and patience, the foundation of all progress.

Finally, I pressed my forehead to Luminara. The sword vibrated faintly, grounding me. A single thought crystallized: Earn. Prepare. Observe. Strike. Everything else was patience.

I whispered, "Status."

The wind rustled faintly through the forest. The Fragments of the Future waited beyond the village, hidden among shadows, energy, and time. I could feel them calling, distant but undeniable.

And I would claim them, not recklessly, but with patience, preparation, and precision.

The first stage of my plan had begun.

The forest pressed close, silent, watching. And so did I.
