Chapter 31 - Chapter 57-58

CHAPTER 57 — "THE INVISIBLE HAND"

"There is no glory when nobody knows. But there is honor when those who matter saw."

— Dylan Travers, Langley, January 2024

Langley, Virginia — January 11, 2024 | 5:42 AM | Basement 3 – Operational Debriefing Room – Ground Branch

The room was closed, windowless, with soundproof walls and an oval table covered in Kevlar. In the center, three folders with red stamps: "RESTRICTED – EYES ONLY – GROUND/DELTA".

Dylan entered first, wearing a gray blazer over a tactical shirt. His face was tired, but calm. He had spent the last 9 hours coordinating the final extraction, reviewing communications, and authorizing the team to return via commercial route under logistical cover.

The operators arrived soon after.

Marcus "Falco" Ruiz, dark civilian uniform, unshaven, attentive gaze.

Scott "Ghost" Merrick, more restrained, with his usual black Ground Branch cap, and eyes that had seen too much.

Behind him, the two Delta operators who supported the mission. One of them, the explosives expert known as Cody, a veteran.

They all entered and sat down with the nonchalance of those who treated death as a routine matter.

Dylan opened the folder. And began.

— "First of all: congratulations. What you did in northern Mali is not just a successful operation. It's a lesson in clandestine precision."

He paused. He looked at them one by one.

— "Dagger-9 was located alive. Severely dehydrated, puncture wound in the shoulder, but conscious and still with the encrypted hard drive in its capsule. You arrived 4 minutes before a hostile group reached the perimeter."

Ghost spoke:

— "His radio was burned out. He tried to hold position, but the emergency transmitter had thermal noise. We almost didn't locate him."

Dylan nodded.

"And yet you did it. You intercepted, extracted, and passed through the secondary zone without alerting anyone. No one died outside the plan. No unnecessary shots fired. Nothing leaked."

Falco crossed his arms:

"The local contacts were useful. The civilian cover gave us leeway. But if the helicopter had been delayed another five minutes…"

"You were authorized to improvise," Dylan replied. "And you improvised with discipline. That's what separates Ground Branch from the others."

Cody, the oldest Delta, smiled slightly.

"And what's on the hard drive? Was it worth the risk?"

Dylan closed the folder with a light snap.

"Data confirms the movement of weapons through secret logistics corridors between Gao, Tamanrasset, and Benghazi. The routes supply three groups linked to the Quds Force, with weapons via Chinese intermediaries. This includes electronic jamming technology and drones customized for saturation attacks."

Silence.

— "In other words," Dylan continued, "you prevented the next hybrid war in the Middle East from starting with weapons delivered through deserts where nobody is looking."

Ghost murmured:

— "And all this on a mission that never existed."

Dylan looked at him.

— "Exactly. And that's why I requested this meeting outside of formal channels."

He stood up. He walked to the board. He pointed to the names:

TEAM ONE: GHOST, FALCO, GROUND OP 03, GROUND OP 07

TEAM TWO: DELTA (CODY), DELTA 2, GROUND OP 10, GROUND OP 12

— "This team won't win a medal. No names will go on the presidential report. Nobody from the State Department will pat you on the back."

He stopped.

— "But everyone here knows: you held the thread that keeps the world standing."

Falco, with his arms on the table, let out a light laugh.

"This counts for more than a medal."

Cody, the oldest there, confirmed:

"A medal rusts. But respect among those who operate… doesn't."

Dylan walked to the door. He stopped.

"You have three days of standdown. Active rest. Light training. Then, analysis of lessons learned and preparation for the cells that will operate in parallel in the next phase. You will be mission consultants for the next three months."

Ghost raised an eyebrow:

"We've become 'models' now?"

Dylan smiled.

"No. You've become the benchmark."

Langley – Dylan's Office | 7:12 AM

Later, alone in his office, Dylan held the encrypted hard drive in his hands. The NSA technician would do the final decryption. The mission didn't end just because the team was returning.

Kaitlyn entered, a mug of coffee in her hand.

— "I heard it was a success."

— "It was."

— "And without any casualties?"

— "Not a single cut."

She sat down.

— "That's becoming common with you in charge."

Dylan smiled wearily.

— "They're getting better and better. Or I'm just getting luckier."

— "It's not luck, Dylan. It's discipline. It's leadership. And it's the respect you've built. They follow you because they know that if you're in charge… it's because you would do the same."

He was silent. Then he replied:

— "I just want them to go home. Like I did."

She raised her mug.

— "To those who return."

He raised his.

— "And to those who do it namelessly."

They toasted.

Because in that world…

silence is the greatest honor.

CHAPTER 58 — "THE CENTER OF THE CIRCLE"

"The line between the tip of the spear and the hand that wields it is shorter than it seems. But few cross that path."

— Dylan Travers, January 2024

Langley, Virginia – January 12, 2024 | 6:02 AM | Executive Wing of the Directorate of Operations – Room 2B

The morning had not yet fully dawned. The winter chill filtered through the thick walls of CIA headquarters. The silence of the corridors was broken only by the deep, routine sound of the security doors opening and closing with biometric authorization.

Dylan walked with sure steps down the main corridor of the DO, his dark gray blazer over his blue tactical shirt, his tie tight, his expression sober. His black identification card with the silver Ground Branch seal hung from his belt, visible only to those who knew where to look.

He had received the call from Bryon Keene — "Level 1 meeting, confidential. Just the two of us."

It was unusual. Dylan had known Bryon long enough to know that the deputy director only called for conversations like this when something was game-changing.

06:07 AM | Meeting Room – Operations Directorate

The room was small. Just a table, three chairs, a blank monitor, and two coffee cups on the wood. Bryon was already there, standing, staring at the blank screen. Hearing Dylan enter, he turned around.

— "Sit down, Dylan."

Dylan obeyed.

Bryon closed the door. He sat down opposite him. He took a deep breath.

— "I'll get straight to the point."

Dylan simply nodded silently.

Bryon placed a thin folder on the table. He touched the top with his fingers.

"The National Security Council contacted us last night. They've been monitoring your performance for some time. Not just at the operational level, but strategically, doctrinally, and decisionally."

Dylan raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Since when?"

"Since the operation in Damascus. But the turning point was the hard drive recovery mission in Mali. The White House received the summary two days ago. Biden read it personally."

Dylan remained silent.

Bryon then opened the folder. He pulled out a sheet of letterhead with the gold seal of the Executive Office of the President.

"They want you there. Officially. Starting next week, you will be temporarily transferred from the Ground Branch to a rotating role on the National Security Council Staff."

Dylan maintained his composure.

"Role?"

"Senior Intelligence Liaison for High-Density Clandestine Operations. It's a nice title for what you already do: provide the right answers before the problem explodes." "Based where?"

Bryon smiled.

"In the West Wing of the White House. Situation Room. You'll be participating in the morning briefings with the President, along with the Director of the CIA, DNI, NSA, and Secretary of Defense. Daily."

Silence.

Dylan looked at the paper for a few seconds.

"So now I'm part of the center of the circle."

Bryon became serious.

"Now, Dylan… you're the shadow on the President's shoulder."

7:12 AM | Dylan's Office – Ground Branch

Kaitlyn entered without knocking. She knew. She always knew.

"So, when are you going to stop being the hand that moves the world and become just another man in a suit in D.C.?"

Dylan smiled slightly.

"Apparently, on Monday."

She sat down.

"White House?"

He nodded.

— "NSC. Daily briefings. Direct connection to the President."

She crossed her legs.

— "Congratulations."

— "I don't know if it's a promotion or a trap."

— "Both."

They laughed.

Then, silence fell.

Kaitlyn then said:

— "You deserve it. And they need someone like you there. Someone who's been on the other side of the radio. Who knows what happens when the wrong decision falls into the hands of someone who's never carried a dead operator to the helicopter."

Dylan looked out the window, where the morning light was beginning to dawn over Langley.

— "I just hope that… in there, I can still protect those who go."

Kaitlyn stood up.

— "If anyone can, it's you."

Washington D.C. – January 15, 2024 | 6:27 AM | West Wing of the White House

Dylan walked through the corridors of the West Wing with a new access card strapped to his belt. Tailored suit, concealed holster. His eyes registered everything entrances, guard positions, response distances, secondary exits.

Old habits.

An NSC aide accompanied him, nervous.

"You will be introduced to General Kincaid, National Security Advisor. Then we go straight to the Presidential Daily Brief (PDB). The President is already in the Situation Room."

Dylan just listened.

Upon entering, the world changed.

The Situation Room.

Real-time electronic maps. Cold voices. Directors of all agencies. Chief of Staff. Homeland Security Advisor. Secretary of State. Secretary of Defense.

And the President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Dylan sat at the table in silence.

When the President looked at him, he spoke in a firm voice.

"Are you Dylan Travers?"

Dylan nodded.

"Yes, sir."

Biden stared at him.

"You've saved this country more than this building would like to admit."

Dylan replied calmly.

"And I'm still here, sir."

The President smiled.

"Good. Then let's begin."

8:00 AM | Presidential Briefing – Topic: Operations in Territories of Denial

Dylan clearly presented his analysis of the new emerging threats in the Horn of Africa region. He spoke about IRGC underground routes of influence, the use of proxies, and the clandestine movement of weapons through Libya and Sudan.

At the end, the CIA Director looked at Biden.

"With all due respect, sir… if you want to know what's really happening on the ground, this man here has been the shadow of every mission. And now he's here."

Biden looked at Dylan.

"Then I hope you continue to tell me the truth. Unfiltered."

Dylan looked back.

"Always, sir. Because those who die unremembered… there's no one left to tell the truth."

Later | Temporary Office – NSC

Dylan sat down. He took off his holster, placed the Glock in a wooden drawer. He picked up the pen. He looked at the new badge with the White House seal.

And then he wrote in the notebook:

"January 15, 2024. Entered the Situation Room. Spoke with the President.

Mission: keep alive those who operate in silence.

Objective: ensure that decisions made in suits don't destroy lives in uniform.

Operator: still me."

He closed the notebook.

And looked at the city from behind the bulletproof glass.

Now, he no longer needed to enter through the back door.

Now… the door was his.
