Chapter 58: The Dragon's Vow
The obsidian walls of the tower seemed to lean in, heavy with the weight of the confession Erza had just spilled. Her shoulders, usually held with the rigid strength of a general, finally slumped. The legendary Titania looked small, her crimson hair shielding a face wet with the tears she had held back for eight long years.
She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, a jagged, desperate motion. "I am sorry," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I should have never let you see me like this. You should have never come to this place."
Natsu didn't hesitate. He stepped forward, closing the distance in a single stride, and pulled Erza into a tight, crushing hug. He wrapped his powerful arms around her, pressing her head against his chest as if he could shield her from the very memories she had just shared. There was no hesitation, no awkwardness, just a fierce, protective heat that radiated from his body.
Lucy moved a moment later, stepping in from the other side to wrap her arms around both of them. She buried her face against Erza's shoulder, her own eyes shimmering with empathy. "We are a team, Erza," Lucy murmured. "Your past is ours now. You don't have to carry it alone. We are here for you."
Gray stood a few feet away, his hands hanging uselessly at his sides as he watched the three of them. A familiar, sharp pang of jealousy hit him squarely in the chest, more bitter than the salt air. He saw the way Natsu held her, not like a teammate, but like a man who had already claimed her soul. He saw the easy, intimate circle the three of them formed, a bond that felt so tight it almost excluded him.
Natsu pulled back just enough to reach out and tilt Erza's face up, his fingers firm under her chin. He forced her to look at him. His eyes were no longer the eyes of the boy she had once mentored. They were slitted, burning with an ancient, terrifying seriousness that made her breath hitch.
"I am going to make him pay," Natsu growled, his voice vibrating with a low, draconic rumble. "I am going to make him pay for every tear he made you cry."
Erza stared into that gaze, seeing a strength that felt absolute. For a heartbeat, the warrior queen vanished, and she lowered her head, leaning her forehead into the crook of his neck, seeking the warmth only he could provide.
"I will be the one to face him," Erza said, her voice muffled against his scarf. "He is my responsibility. I have to end this."
Natsu stopped her, his grip on her shoulders tightening. "No. The legend of the NEW FIRE DRAGON begins with this fight. I will be the one to destroy Jellal."
Erza looked at him, startled by the sheer weight of his declaration. She stepped back, trying to regain her composure. "You do not understand the stakes, Natsu. Jellal is not just a man anymore. He is obsessed with Zeref. The R-System... it is designed to bring him back to life."
"Zeref?" Lucy asked, her face paling.
"The cruelest and most powerful Dark Mage in history," Erza explained, her voice trembling. "He is the source of all the evil we have fought. He created the Lullaby. He likely created Deliora. If Jellal succeeds in resurrecting him, the world will be consumed by darkness."
Lucy gripped her keys tightly. "If he is so evil, why do your friends think you are the enemy? Why do they call you a traitor?"
Erza looked at the floor. "I do not know what they were told. I only know that I was forced to leave them behind."
"Jellal lied to us!"
The group spun around to see Sho standing in the shadows of a nearby pillar. He was trembling, his face a mask of fury and confusion. He had overheard everything. "He told us you planted bombs in our ships! He said you tried to kill us all so you could escape alone! He said if he hadn't noticed the trap, everyone would have died!"
Sho stepped into the light, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. "He made us get back to work. He told us your betrayal was a sign that the tower must be completed to protect us from people like you!"
"I would never do that, Sho," Erza said, her voice filled with a heartbreaking softness. "I never planted any bombs. I wanted you to be free. I have spent every day of the last eight years wishing I could come back for you."
Sho's eyes darted between them, his world-view fracturing. "But Jellal... he saved us..."
"He lied to you, Sho."
Simon stepped out from the darkness behind him, his tall frame imposing. He walked toward Erza, his dark eyes never leaving hers. "I knew it was a lie from the very beginning. I never stopped trusting you, Erza."
Erza gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Simon... you knew?"
"I saw the look in your eyes when you left," Simon said quietly. "I knew you were forced. But I was too weak to lead the others against him."
Erza walked over to Sho and placed a hand on his shoulder. "I was too weak in the past too, Sho. I ran because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive. But I am stronger now. We are all stronger."
Sho looked at Simon, then at the Fairy Tail mages. The anger seemed to drain out of him, replaced by a grim resolve. "Then let us do it. Let us stop him."

Elsewhere, the Magic Council chamber was a theater of chaos.
"Using Etherion is murder!" one council member screamed, slamming his fist onto the table. "There are innocent people in that tower! Bystanders, tourists from the resort, and the prisoners themselves! We would be killing everyone!"
Siegrain stood tall, his expression cold and detached. "I am willing to take that risk. A few hundred lives to save millions. It is simple math."
The debate raged on, voices cracking with strain. Michello was red-faced with fury, while Yajima looked like he was on the verge of tears.
"We need a majority," Siegrain reminded them, his voice like a blade.
Slowly, Belno raised her hand. Her face was aged and weary. "The R-System cannot be allowed to exist. If this is the only way... then I agree to use Etherion."
The tally was growing. Siegrain looked toward the remaining undecided members, a ghost of a smile touching his lips.

In the throne room at the top of the tower, Jellal stood by the massive window, watching the swirling clouds above. He could feel the mana in the air shifting, the cosmic energies beginning to align.
"One more," Jellal whispered to the empty room. "Only one more vote until the game ends... and the true freedom begins."
[The Tower of Heaven arc continues.]
