Chapter 22 - 22. The Uninvited Sleepover

Chapter 22: The Uninvited Sleepover

Night had fallen over a bruised and wary Magnolia. Lucy trudged up the stairs to her apartment, her mind a swirl of iron spikes, Makarov's unsettling cheer, and the lingering, nervous energy of the guild crammed in the cellar. She craved the quiet solitude of her own space, a book, and her own bed to process the day's madness.

She slid her key into the lock, turned it, and pushed the door open.

Her cozy, cluttered apartment was not quiet. It was occupied.

Erza Scarlet was methodically inspecting the window latches, her armored gloves testing each one for strength. Gray Fullbuster was lounging on her sofa, already shirtless and looking irritatingly at home, with one of her throw pillows behind his head. Happy was in her small kitchenette, rummaging through her cupboards. "Aye! Lucy! Do you have any fish snacks?"

And Natsu Dragneel was standing in the middle of her living room, hands on his hips, surveying the space as if appraising a campsite.

Lucy stood frozen in the doorway, her bag slipping from her fingers. "Wha… what is this? A surprise home invasion?"

Erza turned, not a hint of apology on her face. "Given Phantom Lord's direct attack on our guild hall, we must assume they have done their reconnaissance. They likely know the residences of key members." She stated it as a simple, tactical fact. "It is not safe for you to be alone. Therefore, we will be staying here tonight. Safety in numbers."

"You decided this for me?" Lucy squeaked, a flush of indignation rising.

"Yes," Erza said, as if commenting on the weather. She pointed a finger at Gray. "You, take the floor by the door." She pointed at Natsu. "You, the space by the balcony." She gestured to a clear patch of floor. "Happy and I will maintain a perimeter watch in shifts."

Gray gave a lazy salute from the couch. "Sure thing, boss. Nice place you got, Lucy. Comfy couch."

"That's my couch! And you're not sleeping on it!"

"Relax, we're just here to make sure the iron-loving freaks don't try a repeat performance on your personal space," Natsu said, finally looking at her. His expression was more serious than she'd seen since their morning together. The playful glint was gone, replaced by a watchful intensity that told her he, at least, wasn't treating this as a joke. The memory of his recent seriousness, of the fight, of their private moments, made her indignation falter.

With a resigned groan, she kicked the door shut and dropped her bag. "Fine. But nobody touches my celestial spirit keys, eats my special dessert pudding, or uses all the hot water."

As the "perimeter" was established (Happy proudly "guarding" the fruit bowl), the group settled into an uneasy quiet. The reality of their situation, away from the bravado of the guild basement, began to sink in.

"So," Gray said, breaking the silence, his eyes closed as he lounged. "Phantom Lord. They've been a thorn in our side for years."

Erza, having finished her inspection, sat rigidly in Lucy's best armchair. "Indeed. The rivalry is well-documented. They see us as their primary obstacle to dominance in Fiore."

"It's more than just rivalry," Gray added, his voice low. "They're a mirror. A dark one."

Lucy, who had sunk into the space next to Gray on the couch (after shoving his feet off), looked at him. "A mirror?"

Gray nodded, his gaze distant, as if reciting from the guild archives he'd been studying. "Think about it. Both guilds are led by one of the Ten Wizard Saints. Master Makarov and their master, Jose Porla. That's the top tier, right there."

Erza picked up the thread, her analytical mind engaged. "Then, the structure. Phantom Lord boasts their 'Element Four', Aria, Sol, Juvia, and Totomaru. An elite team, each wielding a powerful elemental magic. They are considered to be on par, in raw power and threat level, with Fairy Tail's own S-Class mages." She didn't name them, but everyone knew she meant herself, Mirajane, Laxus, and Mystogan.

A cold knot formed in Lucy's stomach. "So… they have a team as strong as Erza?"

"And then," Gray said, his voice losing its lazy edge, "there's the heavy hitter. The one that makes it personal." He opened his eyes and looked straight at Natsu. "Gajeel Redfox."

The name landed in the room like a lead weight. Natsu's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

"Gajeel?" Lucy asked.

"Their strongest member," Erza said, her tone grim. "A Dragon Slayer. Like Natsu."

The air seemed to thin. Lucy's eyes went wide. Another one? She'd thought Natsu and the mysterious, vanished Igneel were unique.

"His element isn't fire, though," Natsu said, his voice a low growl. He held up a hand, and a tiny, controlled flame danced on his palm. "It's iron. He eats it. He becomes it. He controls it." He closed his fist, snuffing the flame. "He's not some brawler who got lucky. He's the real deal. And Phantom Lord uses him as their wrecking ball."

The pieces fell into place for Lucy with terrifying clarity. The iron bars impaling the guild hall weren't just a dramatic weapon of choice. They were a signature. A calling card. A direct, taunting challenge from one Dragon Slayer to another.

The cozy apartment felt suddenly colder, smaller. They weren't just hiding from a generic dark guild. They were in the crosshairs of an organization built to rival their own, led by a Wizard Saint, backed by a team as powerful as their best, and spearheaded by a monster who was Natsu's dark reflection.

Silence descended again, heavier this time. Happy had stopped rummaging and was listening, his ears drooping.

Natsu broke the quiet, his eyes finding Lucy's in the dim lamplight. "That's why we're here," he said, and for the first time that night, it didn't sound like an order from Erza or a tactical necessity. It sounded like a simple, fierce promise. "Because they have an Element Four. But we have a team. And they have Gajeel." A spark, hot and possessive, flashed in his green eyes. "But you have me."

Outside, the night was still. But inside Lucy Heartfilia's apartment, the lines were drawn. The war with Phantom Lord had moved from their guild hall to their hearts and homes. And the first, long night of the siege had begun.
