Chapter 4 - The Secret Gift

Julian sat in the driver seat of the black sedan, one hand resting lightly against his chin as the city passed by beyond the tinted window.

Rosalie's smile lingered in his mind.

Bright…Warm and different.

And then, her words lingered in his mind.

This Tuesday is my birthday …. would you come? I wish you would.

For a man known for his composure, it was absurd how easily those simple words unsettled him. He exhaled quietly.

But even as the car moved forward, his thoughts refused to settle.

By the time he stepped into the Thorne residence, he had already replayed that moment more times than he cared to admit.

A shopping trip to remember ….

He had barely taken off his coat. And then, he was quietly reading a medical journal in the study. The door burst open, and Lily marched in with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

" So, Big Brother, "

She began, leaning against his desk.

" I heard we're going to a very special birthday party next Tuesday. "

Julian didn't look up, but a small smile tugged at his lips.

" If you mean Rosalie's, then yes. Her parents invited us. It's just a small birthday gathering. "

" Just? Big Brother, this is Rosie's birthday. That's not 'just' anything. Oh, don't give me that 'professional' tone! Like you don't care about it. "

Lily teased, snatching the journal from his hands.

" We both know you've been counting the days. But let's talk about the most important part; the gift. You aren't planning to give her a stethoscope or a textbook, are you? "

Julian finally looked at her, his expression softening.

"So…. what are you going to give her?"

Julian hesitated. That was the problem. He didn't know.

" I was thinking of something …. elegant. Something that suits her. "

" Aha! So, you have been thinking about it! "

Lily squealed.

" Listen, Big Brother. Rosie is seventeen now. She's blooming into a beautiful young woman. If you don't show her how special she is, some boy at her school might beat you to. "

"That won't happen."

The words came out quieter than expected. Julian eyes furrowed for a split second at that thought, a hint of his hidden possessiveness showing.

"Ohhh…so you do care."

" She's still young. Lily, she should focus on her studies. "

" And you should focus on your heart too!

Lilly retorted, pointing a finger at him.

" Pick a gift that says ' I really care,' not just ' I'm your doctor.' If you don't, I'll tell her you spent an hour picking out your shirt for her check-up last day!"

Julian sighed, defeated by his little sister's persistence.

" Fine. What do you suggest, O Great Matchmaker? "

Lily grinned, victorious.

" Now stop talking. Let's go shopping. Move … move … "

The Secrete Gift ….

The city's high-end shopping district was alive with movement, luxury storefronts gleaming beneath the afternoon sun. But Julian and Lily walked in with a specific purpose.

Lily dragged her brother from one boutique to another, rejecting everything from expensive perfumes to diamond earrings.

" No, Julian. Those are too generic. Rosie needs something that speaks to her soul. "

Lily insisted, her eyes scanning the shop windows.

Julian remained patient, though his mind was constantly filtering through memories of Rosalie-her love for garden, her newfound maturity, and the way the sunlight hit the violet she tended so carefully.

Suddenly, as they passed a small, exclusive boutique tucked away in a quiet corner, Julian stopped. He saw something through the glass that made his heart skip a beat. It wasn't flashy or overly expensive, but it was a unique, timeless, and perfectly her.

" That's it, "

Julian whispered; his gaze fixed on the item.

For a brief moment, the noise of the street faded into nothing.

A memory appeared…

Rosalie standing in the garden, sunlight resting gently on her shoulders. The calm in her eyes.

Lily followed his gaze and gasped, a huge grin spreading across her face.

" Oh, Julian. You have amazing thought. It's perfect. She's going to love it. "

They entered the shop and after a brief conversation, the item was carefully wrapped in a sleek ivory box, tied with a thin silk ribbon.

Julian held the bag carefully, a sense of quiet anticipation setting in his chest. As if it were something far more fragile than it appeared.

In the car, he looked down at the box, resting in his lap. For the first time in a long while, anticipation stirred in his chest.

Not for work. Not for responsibility.

But for a single day. A single moment.

The gift was chosen, but its secret would remain safe until the day of the birthday.

This time…

I want her birthday to become a memory she'll never forget.

After leaving the boutique, Julian placed the neatly wrapped box in the back seat with care.

"I still can't believe you actually picked something decent."

Julian was starting the engine.

"I'll drop you home first."

"Eh? You're not going back?"

Lily tilted her head suspiciously.

"I have a night shift."

Lily's teasing expression softened slightly.

"…You're working tonight too?"

Julian gave a small nod, eyes on the road.

"It's nothing unusual."

The car moved smoothly through the evening traffic, the golden light of sunset slowly fading into night.

Lily watched him quietly for a moment. Then, in a softer voice…

"You know… you don't have to try so hard all the time."

Julian didn't respond immediately. After a brief pause, he said.

"It's not about trying hard."

His grip on the steering wheel remained steady.

"It's simply what needs to be done."

When they arrived at the Thorne residence, Lily stepped out of the car but paused before closing the door.

"Big Brother,"

She said, leaning slightly toward him.

"…. don't be late on Tuesday."

Julian glanced at her.

"I won't."

Only then did Lily smile and head inside.

Without wasting another moment, Julian turned the car around and drove toward the hospital.

The city lights flickered to life as night fully settled in.

The hospital stood tall in the distance, its glass walls glowing under artificial light.

Julian parked the car and stepped inside, his expression already shifting into calm professionalism.

The familiar scent of antiseptic filled the air.

Cold…. Precise…. Controlled….

So different from the warmth he had just left behind.

"Dr. Thorne,"

A nurse greeted, handing him a tablet.

"The night ward is stable, but Room 312 has been asking for you."

"I'll handle it,"

Julian replied. Inside the ward, the quiet hum of machines filled the room.

A young patient looked up weakly as he entered.

"Doctor..."

Julian moved closer, checking the readings with practiced ease.

"Your condition is improving,"

He said calmly.

"Continue the medication as instructed."

The patient smiled faintly.

"You always say that…. but it makes me feel better every time."

Julian paused for a brief second. Then gave a small nod.

After completing his rounds, Julian stood alone by the window at the end of the corridor.

The city stretched endlessly below, glowing under the night sky.

For years… This had been his world.

Responsibility…. Precision…control….

Lives depending on his decisions.

Tonight, his thoughts wandered.

To her, a quiet smile, a soft voice inviting him…

"This Tuesday…"

For the first time… He wasn't waiting for the next emergency. He was waiting for her.

Julian glanced at the time on the dashboard. It was only around seven in the evening.

Not too late.

The city was just beginning to quiet down, the last traces of sunset fading into a deep blue sky.

For a moment, his hand moved toward his phone. Then stopped. He picked it up. Unlocked the screen.

Paused. Locked it again.

A small frown formed between his brows.

Calling her now…. Would it be too sudden?

Too unnecessary?

He exhaled softly, leaning back slightly in his seat. The thought of her lingered. His fingers tightened slightly around the phone.

Just as he finally made up his mind and moved to dial…

The screen lit up.

Rosalie calling.

Julian froze for half a second. Then answered immediately.

"…Rosie?"

On the other end, her voice came softly.

"Julian…are you busy?"

Her voice sounded normal. He leaned back, his expression easing without realizing.

"Not really, I was just about to head out."

A small pause. Then she spoke again, gently…

"I was just…checking on your health. You've been working a lot lately, haven't you?"

Julian let out a quiet breath, a faint smile touching his lips.

"I should be the one asking you that."

Rosalie laughed softly.

"Maybe…"

Neither of them spokes for a moment. Yet neither of them wanted to hang up.

What started as a simple check-in slowly turned into something more.

Small talk. Light teasing. Unnecessary questions.

Answers that led nowhere…

And yet, somehow, nowhere felt exactly right. Time slipped by unnoticed. Minutes turned into nearly half an hour.

Neither of them mentioned it. Neither of them tried to end the call. As if both silently understood…

By the time, Julian glanced at the clock again, nearly eight o'clock.

"…You should rest,"

He said at last.

"You too,"

Rosalie replied. A brief lingered.

"Good night, Julian"

"…Good night, Rosie."

The call ended.

But for some reason, the quiet inside the car didn't feel quite the same as before.
