Once again, everyone stepped out into the cold night air. Officers checked beneath the van, scrutinized papers, and opened the rear doors. One gestured toward the jerrican.


"Just water," Daniella replied, keeping her tone even. "Supplies for the estate."


The officer shook the container. The white liquid sloshed inside. He pried open the lid, the flashlight beam cutting through the contents. For one long, agonizing second, he simply stared.


Then he shrugged, annoyance winning over suspicion. "Alright. Move along."


Daniella climbed back inside, her hands trembling slightly as she gripped the jerrican once more. The van doors closed. The engine roared back to life.


She released a slow, shaky breath she hadn't realized she had been holding.
