Chapter 74 - 74 The First Correction

By the time the horses were led onto the field, the atmosphere had settled into something sharper than anticipation.

It was not silence. Conversations still existed, but they had thinned, pulled tighter, as if everyone present had unconsciously agreed to leave space for what mattered. Attention had gathered in one place, held there by expectation rather than instruction.

I stepped forward when my name was called.

There was no urgency in the movement. I crossed the distance at a measured pace, aware of where every eye had settled without needing to look directly at any of them. The field had already done its work. The arrangement, the scale, the presence of the people gathered there had shaped the moment before it even began.

My horse stood waiting.

He shifted his weight once as I approached, the movement controlled, contained, more alert than restless. He remembered. I did too. That memory did not need to be dismissed or avoided. It only needed to be handled correctly.
