Chapter 3 - Art of Argument

The café was called The Stone and the Honey, and it was precisely the sort of place that exists in every city with sufficient history to have opinions about itself: walls of limestone darkened by time, wooden tables with the honest patina of use, narrow windows that filtered the morning light into golden, oblique slices. It smelled of cardamom and of something burnt that no one had bothered to identify in years.

Mara had walked past it three times during the planning without ever going in, because entering cafés during the planning was the kind of thing that created memory and memory created witnesses. Now she was sitting inside it, across from Lord Caen, with a cup of tea she had not ordered but which had appeared before her with the discreet inevitability of things that happen near powerful people.

Two members of the escort remained outside. Ress — she had learnt his name from the way the others treated him, which was the expression of people who respect someone and would like that someone to know it — stayed inside, at a corner table, pretending to study the menu with a dedication that might have been convincing had he not kept glancing at her every forty seconds.

Lord Caen held his cup in both hands, with the ease of someone who had held cups long enough not to need to think about it any more.

"Your name," he said. It was not a question. It was the beginning of a conversation, which is a different thing.

"Mara[1]."

"Just Mara?"

"Mara Solé[2]."

He tilted his head slightly, the way one does when registering something. "Which part of Varra, Mara Solé?"

"The lower part." She paused. "Where the fountains don't have golden limestone."

He did not smile, but there was something in his face that had not been there before. She could not name what it was. "How long did you spend planning this?"

"Nine days."

"Nine days." He repeated it with the quality of someone weighing something. "And how many times did you walk the route?"

Mara looked at him. There was a question inside the question — not *how many times* but *I saw you*, which was information about the kind of attention he paid to the world, and which she would have preferred not to receive now that there was nothing to be done with it. "Four."

"On the third occasion you were wearing a blue coat."

She did not reply.

"Was it blue or green?" he asked, with the specific tone of someone who genuinely is not certain and genuinely wishes to know, which was disconcerting because there was no apparent reason for it to matter.

"Moss green. With bone buttons."

"Moss green," he repeated, as though that resolved something. He raised the cup to his lips. Then he waited. There was in him a manner of waiting that was not quite patience — patience implies cost, implies the effort of containing something. It was more like the waiting of a large stone: simply being, with all the solidity of that, until the other side of the conversation found what it needed to say.

Mara hated it. She hated it because it worked.

"My mother is dying," she said. The words came out with the texture of things one has practised saying but which, when actually said, reveal that the rehearsal had not come close. "The hospital was closed. The reallocation decree — *your* decree —" she was deliberate about the word *your*, placed into it the weight she had been carrying for the past two months, "— closed the only hospital within a distance we could afford to transport her. Now she is at home with pain that is being managed by someone who is not a doctor, which is me, who is eighteen years old and learnt to dress wounds by watching videos at the library because the internet at home was cut off when the money ran out."

She stopped. There was more, there was the entire letter, but the letter was in the inside pocket of her coat and suddenly seemed redundant, because the words that mattered were already in the air between them, cooling.

Lord Caen regarded her for a moment she could not measure.

"You brought documentation," he said. It was not a question.

"The letter has..."

"Not the letter." Something in the tone — not hardness, not impatience, but a kind of precision. "Documentation. Medical records. A clinical report. The sort of thing a person who spent nine days planning an impossible approach to a White most likely compiled."

Mara opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again. "It's in the letter."

"Then give me the letter."

She put her hand into the inside pocket of her coat...

And her hand found the knife.

It was not a real knife. It was a letter opener, long enough to appear convincing if held in a way that did not invite close inspection. She had placed it there on the second day of planning, when she had discovered, in those same security incident reports, that most people who had come close to a White without violent intent had been detained before they could speak, because empty hands moving quickly towards one's own body were indistinguishable, to an escort, from non-empty hands moving quickly towards one's own body.

The logic had been: if they're going to assume I have a knife, let it at least buy me an extra second of negotiation.

The logic had seemed sounder in the library.

Her hand hesitated in the pocket.

She took out the knife.

She placed it on the table between them, with the care one uses when one wishes something to appear deliberate rather than accidental, because the difference between the two was, at that moment, the difference between a declaration and a mistake.

Lord Caen looked at the knife with the expression of someone who had seen far more and far better, which was precisely the most deflating possible expression in response to a letter opener. And then — Mara could not identify the exact moment it occurred, there was no sound, no visible gesture, merely the quality of the air at the table changing for half a second in the way air changes before something inevitable —

The knife was no longer a letter opener.

It was a pistol. Small, black, with the particular solidity of things made for a single purpose and constructed without ornament. Mara had seen pistols before — she had seen them on the library television, had seen them at the belts of district officers when her mother had still been able to walk to the street. She knew what it was.

It was in her hand.

She had not moved her hand.

"This way," said Lord Caen, with the tone of someone explaining something reasonable, "you have slightly better odds." He leant forward slightly over the table, with the serene expression of someone unconcerned about the outcome and therefore free to genuinely appreciate the shape of the situation. "Fire, if you like. It would be, objectively, more interesting than the paper knife."

Mara looked at the pistol in her own hand.

Looked at him.

"It won't work," he said, with the particular gentleness of someone being honest at their own expense. "Nothing you might produce here would work. But there is an aesthetic difference between attempting something with an object that has weight and attempting with something that..." he made a vague gesture towards what had been the knife, "...inspires neither side of the situation."

"You just turned my knife into a pistol."

"Technically, your intention did the turning. I merely..." he paused, searching for the right word with the expression of someone who has many and is being judicious, "...facilitated the argument."

"That is..." she stopped. Several words were available. Absurd. Impossible. Condescending. Unsettling in ways that would take some time to fully inventory. "Is that sarcasm?"

"It's perspective," he said. "The difference is subtle but it exists."

Mara set the pistol on the table with more care than she had used with the knife, which was an irrational impulse but one the moment seemed to require. "You're enjoying this."

"I am surprised," he corrected, and there was in the tone something she had not expected to find: a quality of truth. "Which is different. Surprise is rare. I appreciate rare things."

She opened her mouth to reply.

"With respect."

The voice came from the corner. Ress had abandoned the menu and was looking at them with the expression of someone who had carefully calculated the right moment to intervene and was reasonably confident he had judged it correctly, but not entirely. "The young lady is pointing a firearm in the direction of Lord Caen at a café table during the morning rush." A pause. "There is a family with children two metres away."

Mara looked. There was indeed a family with children two metres away, and the youngest child was watching the pistol with the luminous and terrifying expression of someone who had not yet learnt that certain things ought to be treated with alarm.

She turned the pistol flat on the table, with the instinctive gesture of someone concealing a dirty piece of cutlery. "Sorry."

Lord Caen looked at Ress with the expression of someone interrupted in the middle of something interesting. Ress held the gaze with the compact dignity of a man who had developed professional immunity to disapproval. The silence between them had the texture of an old conversation that had acquired shorthand.

"Thank you, Ress[3]."

"My lord." Ress returned to the corner table. He picked up the menu again. This time he did not look at Mara, which was, she realised, a form of courtesy.

Caen turned his eyes back to her.

There was something different now in the space between them — not exactly ease, because ease would be the wrong word for a situation that still had a pistol on the table, but something less rigid than before. As though the shared absurdity of the past two minutes had involuntarily created a common ground where neither of them had planned to build anything.

"The letter," he said, simply.

Mara took the letter from the inside pocket of her coat, where it had been all along, waiting patiently beneath the place where the knife had been. She placed it on the table. Eighteen pages, numbered, with the references at the end in the format the library had recommended and which she had verified four times.

He did not open it yet.

He simply placed his hand upon it — the old hand with the scar on the wrist, the hand she had gripped forty minutes ago in the square and which had, inexplicably, allowed itself to be gripped.

"Mara Solé from the lower part of Varra," he said, with the intonation of someone cataloguing a thing they do not yet know where to file. "Nine days of planning, four reconnaissance walks, a paper knife, and eighteen pages with references."

She waited.

"Drink your tea," he said. "It's going cold."

She drank.

It tasted of cardamom and of something she could not identify, which was slightly bitter and which was, strangely, exactly the flavour the moment required.

[3] Ress — A surname of mainly German origin. It can derive from Middle High German ræsse, meaning “wild” or “passionate,” or function as a short form of Germanic names containing rād (“counsel”).It is also a Welsh variant of Reese (from Rhys), meaning “ardor” or “enthusiasm.”
