Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Paperwork and Perverts (3)

"As long as you're enjoying the show," Kael said finally, his tone dry. "Though I'd appreciate it if you kept the details to yourself. Some of my partners might not appreciate knowing their intimate moments were being broadcast to an audience."

"Discretion is part of the arrangement," Sylvarian assured him. "I have no intention of sharing what I've witnessed with others. My observations are purely for my own understanding and enjoyment. Your secrets are safe with me."

He straightened, returning to business matters. "So, do we have an agreement? You join the adventure team to the Gilded Depths, maintaining your cover while investigating any suspicious activities. In exchange, you receive legal title to the abandoned building and the freedom to continue your… pursuits… without interference from the academy administration."

"It sounds like a reasonable arrangement," Kael acknowledged. "Though I'm curious — why the building specifically? Why not just pay me for my services?"

"Money is useful, but it doesn't buy loyalty or discretion," Sylvarian replied. "I need someone who has a stake in this academy, who has something to protect, and who will be motivated to act in its best interests even when no one is watching. Giving you the building ensures you have a permanent base of operations, a place to call your own, and a reason to remain connected to this institution."

He smiled faintly. "Besides, I think you'll find the building has certain… advantages that you'll appreciate. The basement, for example, has excellent magical insulation properties. Useful for someone who conducts experiments that might benefit from privacy."

Kael filed that information away. Sylvarian knew about the lab — of course he did — and was explicitly acknowledging it rather than pretending ignorance. It was a calculated move, designed to establish trust through mutual acknowledgment of secrets.

"I accept your terms," Kael said finally. "I'll join the adventure team and assist with the investigation. In exchange, I want the building transferred to my name within the month, along with any necessary paperwork to make it official."

"Consider it done," Sylvarian agreed. "I'll have Lysandra prepare the documents immediately."

He turned to his secretary, who had remained quiet throughout the exchange, focused on her paperwork. "Lysandra, please initiate the transfer process for the western storage facility to Kael's ownership. Standard procedures, expedited timeline. I want everything completed before the field practice begins."

"Yes, Dean Moonwhisper," Lysandra replied, her voice as efficient as ever. "I'll have the documents prepared for your signature by tomorrow morning."

Sylvarian nodded his approval, then turned back to Kael. "There's one more thing — regarding your cover. You'll be officially listed as a support specialist attached to the adventure team, with duties including equipment maintenance, magical residue cleanup, and general assistance to the guild guides. This will give you legitimate reasons to be wherever you need to be without raising suspicions."

"And my janitorial uniform?" Kael asked. "Do I need to wear that in the dungeon?"

"That would be your choice," Sylvarian replied. "Though I'd suggest maintaining your cover as much as possible. The noble students are less likely to see you as a threat if you appear as a humble support worker. It gives you the advantage of being underestimated."

"Which I'm quite good at," Kael acknowledged.

They'd covered everything important, and Kael could feel Elara's eyes on him throughout the conversation. She'd remained quiet, but her expression betrayed her thoughts — she was processing the implications of everything that had been discussed, and he could almost see the gears turning in her mind.

As if on cue, Sylvarian turned to her. "Elara, I believe you and Kael have some matters to discuss regarding your recent… collaboration. Feel free to use the private conference room if you need privacy."

Elara's cheeks flushed slightly at the obvious reference to their sexual relationship, and she stood up, smoothing her skirt with nervous fingers. "Thank you, Dean Moonwhisper. That might be… advisable."

She looked at Kael, and he could see the mix of emotions in her eyes — curiosity, embarrassment, and something else that he couldn't quite identify. But he had a feeling she wanted to talk about what she'd heard, about Sylvarian's admissions of watching them, and about what that meant for their relationship going forward.

"After you," Kael said, gesturing toward the door.

Elara nodded and led the way out of the office, with Kael following close behind. As they walked down the corridor toward the conference room, Kael could feel the tension between them, the unspoken questions hanging in the air.

When they reached the conference room and closed the door behind them, Elara turned to face him, her expression serious.

"So," she began, her voice slightly unsteady. "All this time… he's been watching us? Our meetings, our conversations… everything?"

"Not just ours," Kael replied, leaning against the edge of the conference table. "From what Sylvarian said, he's been watching all my activities with various partners. It's not personal — he just enjoys observing intimacy. A voyeuristic hobby, you could say."

Elara's face flushed deeper, and she wrapped her arms around herself as if suddenly cold. "That's… embarrassing. I never thought anyone was watching us. I always assumed we were alone, that our private moments were actually private."

"They were, in the sense that Sylvarian didn't interfere or share what he saw," Kael said gently. "But I understand how you feel. It's unsettling to know someone has been a spectator to your most intimate moments."

He studied her face, seeing the mix of emotions — embarrassment, anger, and a strange curiosity about what exactly Sylvarian had witnessed. "Is there anything specific you want to know? About what he might have seen?"

Elara bit her lip, considering. "Did he… did he watch everything? Every time we've been together?"

Kael thought back to their encounters over the years — in her office, in various empty classrooms, in the abandoned building. "Probably. Sylvarian has detection and observation magic that's difficult to evade. If we were on academy grounds, there's a good chance he was aware of it."

Elara's flush deepened, and she turned away, unable to meet his eyes. "I feel so exposed. Like every private moment I thought was just between us… wasn't really private at all."

She paced the small conference room, her agitation evident. "It's not just the sex itself, though that's embarrassing enough. It's the things we said, the emotions we shared, the vulnerability I showed with you. All of that was being watched by someone I never even considered."

She stopped pacing and turned back to Kael, her eyes searching his face. "Does it bother you? Knowing that Sylvarian has been watching us all this time?"

"Not particularly," Kael admitted honestly. "I've never been especially concerned with privacy when it comes to my activities. As long as no one is interfering or causing problems, I don't really care who knows what I'm doing."

He paused, considering how to phrase his next point. "But I think what bothers you isn't just the voyeurism itself — it's the uncertainty of not knowing exactly what Sylvarian has seen, or how he's interpreted it. The imagination can be worse than the reality sometimes."

Elara nodded slowly, understanding his point. "You're right. I keep imagining him watching us, analyzing our interactions, drawing conclusions about our relationship that might not even be accurate. It's invasive and unsettling."

She took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "I'll adjust eventually, I suppose. I just need some time to process it. To accept that our private moments weren't as private as I thought."

Kae moved closer to her, resting his hands on her shoulders in a gesture of reassurance. "You will. And remember — Sylvarian isn't judging us. He's not sharing what he's seen with anyone else. He's simply observing, enjoying the show without interfering. In a way, that's less intrusive than someone who would gossip or spread rumors."

"I suppose you're right," Elara acknowledged, though she still seemed uneasy. "It's still going to take some getting used to."

"It will," Kael assured her. "And if it helps, we can be more careful in the future. Use protective measures to block observation magic, choose locations off academy grounds when we want true privacy. We have options."

Elara looked up at him, her expression softening. "That would help. I'd like to have some moments that are just ours, without anyone watching."

She stepped closer, leaning into his touch, her body relaxing against his. "For now, though… can we just stand here for a moment? I need to feel that what we have is real, not just something for an audience."

Kael wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. Elara rested her head against his chest, her breathing gradually slowing as she absorbed his warmth and presence. The conference room was quiet, the muffled sounds of the academy filtering through the walls, but for this moment, they were just two people finding comfort in each other's company.

Whatever Sylvarian had seen, whatever he continued to observe, this moment was theirs — a quiet intimacy that no voyeur could truly understand, a connection that went beyond the physical and touched something deeper between them.

And when Elara finally pulled back, her eyes were clearer, her composure restored.
