Early spring arrived quickly.
With the brutal cold finally retreating, Shen Er seemed to breathe a huge sigh of relief and slowly started having more free time to spend outside.
He was genuinely too clingy—I complained about it often, though my complaints were always half-sweet and half-melancholy.
He started taking me out for spring excursions. Although he wore the white silk blindfold out in public, it did absolutely nothing to hide his peach-blossom beauty. He was blissfully unaware of how naturally he attracted the eyes of others—leaving poor me to weather the constant, jealous glares of passing young women.
One bright, sunlit afternoon, we sat together on a secluded patch of grass beneath the willows. He lay completely relaxed with his head in my lap, holding up his fair, slender hands as if trying to touch the warmth.
"Yuan Yuan, what does the sun look like?" Shen Er asked.
I thought for a moment and answered calmly. "It's round, incredibly bright, and staring straight at it hurts your eyes."
Shen Er chuckled quietly. "Isn't that exactly like my Yuan Yuan?"
I was stunned for a moment, then pressed my lips together in a silent smile.
Looking down at him, his skin was almost translucent, flushed a faint, healthy pink—truly more beautiful than any young girl's.
Lulled by the sun and the quiet, he quickly fell asleep on my lap.
I looked up at the distant scenery—a beautiful, sprawling view of early spring. I looked back down at the face resting in my lap—and it was just as beautiful.
I thought to myself—maybe spending the rest of my life exactly like this, peaceful and quiet, wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.
