Chapter 62 - Chpt 56: Obsidian Heist

The black-market ferry cut through the turbulent waves of the Sea of Cinnabar, the air growing thick with the scent of sulfur and ash. Saffron was a distraction, a grand stage set to keep the League and Team Rocket occupied while the real prize was moved under the cover of a volcanic "disposal" order.

Zeth stood at the bow, his Emerald Shelgon beside him. The dragon's Overcoat shimmered, repelling the corrosive sea spray and the fine volcanic grit raining from the sky.

[Data-Zero Analysis: Thermal signatures in the Cinnabar Sub-Volcano Trench are spiking. We have detected a non-League, non-Rocket frequency operating on a 'Ghost-Band.' They are already in the vault.]

"They aren't Rocket, and they aren't the League," Zeth muttered, adjusting his tactical mask. "A third player is on the board."

The trench was a labyrinth of cooling basalt and high-pressure steam vents. Deep within the geothermal stabilizer plant—Blaine's private domain—lay the 'Incineration Chamber.'

Zeth and his team infiltrated through a cooling intake. As they reached the central platform, they didn't find the expected Rocket grunts. Instead, they found a squad of operatives clad in seamless, matte-white pressurized suits. Their Pokémon weren't the usual Poison or Dark types; they were highly disciplined Metang and Porygon2, moving with a machine-like synchronization that surpassed even Zeth's own rigorous training.

[Organization Identified: Unknown. Tech-Signature: 'Elysium Initiative.' Status: Data-Zero cannot find any record of this group in the Global Trainer Registry.]

In the center of the platform, four operatives were using a localized gravity-well to lift a massive, octagonal case. It was constructed from Grand-Mastered grade lead-alloys and reinforced with Emerald-Potential energy dampeners.

"Drop the case," Zeth commanded, the Lunar Charizard landing on a nearby stalagmite, its Eclipse Aura pulsing aggressively against the white suits' sterile lights.

The operatives didn't speak. One of them signaled, and three Lvl 52 Metang accelerated toward Zeth, their Clear Body abilities glowing.

"Rhyhorn, Lightning Rod! Pull their kinetic energy! Shelgon, Dragon Claw!"

The Rhyhorn (Lvl 38) planted its feet, its horn sparking as it disrupted the Metangs' magnetic guidance. The Emerald Shelgon (Lvl 38) launched itself like a meteor, its Overcoat allowing it to ignore the blistering heat of the surrounding magma. It slammed into the lead Metang, its green-glowing claws leaving deep gouges in the psychic-type's metallic hide.

"Croagunk, Anticipation! Find the weak point in their formation!"

The Croagunk (Lvl 35) shivered, eyes darting. It pointed toward the operative holding the gravity-well controller. "Now! Poison Touch on the controller's power supply!"

Croagunk blurred through the steam, leaping over a Meteor Mash and slamming its purple-stained palm into the device. Corrosive sludge hissed against the high-tech alloy, short-circuiting the gravity-well.

The octagonal case slammed onto the stone floor with a thunderous thud, the shockwave nearly cracking the basalt platform.

The white-suited operatives immediately retreated into a high-speed submersible docked in the magma-canal. They didn't stay to fight to the death; they were pragmatic. "Target secured... secondary retrieval initiated," one of them whispered into a comm-link before the sub dived into the depths.

Zeth stood over the case. It was cold to the touch despite being inches from molten rock.

"Data-Zero, scan the contents."

[Scanning... Internal contents confirmed: Two Master Ball Prototypes. Status: Encased in a 'Zenith-Lock' shell. The material is a composite of Diamond-tier shards and pressurized lead. "The Chairman didn't just hide them; he put them in a tomb," Zeth said, looking at the seamless metal. He had the most valuable items in the world in his hands, but for the first time, he was locked out.

Blaine stepped out, his lab coat singed at the edges, his Lvl 54 Magmar huffing beside him. He wasn't surprised to see Zeth, or the mysterious case.

"The 'Elysium' children think they can just walk into my volcano and take what belongs to the past," Blaine said, his sunglasses reflecting the orange glow of the lava. "You stopped them. That shows fire, boy. But do you have the heat to win a badge?"

Zeth looked at the locked case, then at the Gym Leader. The Master Ball was a puzzle for tomorrow. The Seventh Badge was the requirement for today.

"I didn't come here for the heat, Blaine," Zeth said, the Zenith Cloyster and Houndoom moving to his side. "I came to extinguish it."

The heat in the Sub-Volcano Trench was no longer a passive environmental hazard; it was an active weight, pressing against Zeth's lungs. Blaine stood on a precarious stone pillar suspended over a lake of bubbling white-gold magma. Beside him, his Lvl 52 Magmar didn't just breathe—it exhaled ripples of heat that distorted the very air.

"You've survived the shadows of Saffron and the depths of the Seafoam," Blaine shouted over the roar of the lava. "But here, in the heart of Cinnabar, there is only the fire that forged the world. Show me your conviction!"

[Field Condition: Extreme Heat. Water-type moves reduced by 50%. Fire-type moves increased by 50%. Constant Burn Risk.]

"Cloyster, out! Protect into Icicle Spear!"

Zeth released the Zenith Cloyster (Lvl 40). The moment it appeared, its black-violet shell began to hiss as the moisture in the air evaporated. The Perfection-Tier Water Stone in its core pulsed with a desperate, freezing light to maintain the Pokémon's internal temperature.

"Magmar, Lava Plume!"

The Magmar slammed its fists into the magma. A wave of molten rock surged upward, a wall of 1200°C liquid death.

"Skill Link! Shatter the flow!"

The Cloyster's shell snapped open. Thwip-thwip-thwip-thwip-thwip! Because of its 61% Mastery and Armor-Piercing effect, the five spears of deep-blue ice didn't just melt. They carried enough kinetic force to punch through the molten wave, creating a tunnel of steam that allowed the Cloyster to remain untouched.

"Impressive cooling," Blaine grinned, his eyes gleaming behind his soot-stained glasses. "But can you handle the pressure? Magmar, Fire Blast!"

The Magmar formed a massive Kanji of flame in the air and launched it. The heat was so intense it began to soften the stone floor beneath Zeth's boots.

"Shelgon, intercept! Overcoat!"

The Emerald Shelgon (Lvl 38) leaped in front of the Cloyster. Its 38% Mastered Overcoat flared, the pressurized energy film acting as a heat-shield. The Fire Blast slammed into the emerald shell, the flames washing over the dragon like a tide against a cliff. The Shelgon roared, its small red wings vibrating to dissipate the thermal energy.

"Dragon Claw! Close the distance!"

The Shelgon charged through the embers. It wasn't as fast as a Charizard, but its weight and the Overcoat made it an unstoppable juggernaut. It slammed into the Magmar, its green-glowing claws carving a jagged mark across the fire-type's chest.

Blaine didn't flinch. He was a scientist of battle. "Magmar, Confuse Ray into Fire Punch!"

The Magmar's eyes flashed with a hypnotic, flickering light. The Shelgon, exhausted from the heat, stumbled, its movements becoming erratic.

"Croagunk, Anticipation! Wake him up!"

The Croagunk (Lvl 35) dropped from the ceiling pipes, its body shivering as it sensed the Magmar's incoming strike. It didn't attack the Magmar; it struck the ground near the Shelgon with a Mud Bomb, the cool earth snapping the Shelgon out of its daze.

"Now, Rhyhorn! Lightning Rod isn't just for electricity—draw the heat-signature! Take Down!"

The Rhyhorn (Lvl 38) charged, its horn acting as a thermal sink. It absorbed the secondary heat of the Magmar's aura, dampening the flame-type's power for a split second. It slammed into the Magmar with 50% Mastered Rock Head force, pinning the beast against the basalt wall.

"Enough," Zeth whispered. "Charizard, finish this. Eclipse Aura into Dragon Pulse!"

The Lunar Charizard (Lvl 39) descended. Its 52% Mastered Aura expanded, the dark-green dome clashing violently with the orange glow of the volcano. For the first time, the room went dim. The Charizard consumed the ambient heat of the volcano to fuel its maw.

The Dragon Pulse wasn't a beam; it was a vacuum of dark energy that sucked the heat out of the air. It struck the Magmar head-on, the cold-fire explosion sending the Pokémon into the cooling-water vents.

The Magmar didn't get up. Blaine sighed, the tension leaving his shoulders as he recalled his ace. He walked across the cooling basalt, his boots clicking in the silence.

"You didn't just win with power," Blaine said, looking at the Zenith-Locked case sitting nearby. "You won with synchronization. You used the environment better than I did, boy."

He reached into his pocket and handed Zeth a badge that looked like a stylized flame.

"The Volcano Badge. That's seven. Only one remains, and he's the one who taught me everything I know about the 'Earth'—and the shadows that hide beneath it."

[Item Obtained: Volcano Badge (7/8)]

Zeth secured the badge next to the others. He looked at the unopenable case, the Master Ball prototypes still mocking him from behind their indestructible shell.

"Data-Zero," Zeth said, heading for the exit. "Set a course for Viridian City. It's time to meet the Boss in his own house. We need the eighth badge... and we need the key to this case."
