Family first… then war.
At a safe house on the edge of a state far from Oregon, the car came to a stop.
Ian Vale stepped out slowly.
The door opened before he could knock.
Margaret Harper emerged first.
She didn't speak.
She simply pulled him into a fierce embrace
as if afraid he might disappear again.
Jack Harper followed.
He stood in front of Ian for a moment.
Met his eyes.
"I knew… you wouldn't leave us."
Ian offered a faint smile.
"It wasn't an option."
From behind the door, Amy Harper appeared.
Her eyes shimmered with tears.
"You said you'd come back."
He knelt slightly.
Wrapped his arms around her.
"And I don't lie to you."
Derya Aksoy spoke quietly from behind them.
"You won't be staying here long."
Jack looked at her.
"Where are we going?"
"A region under external protection."
She didn't say the name.
Ian did.
"Kamal Arslan."
Jack and Margaret exchanged a brief look.
"If that keeps them away…" Jack said.
"It keeps you safe," Ian corrected.
Jack stepped closer.
"And you?"
Ian paused.
"I'm not finished."
Hours later, the family departed in a secure vehicle.
Unseen escort.
Routes shifting constantly.
This time
No one would touch them.
Daniel Cross's Office
Daniel Cross sat with two aides.
Files scattered.
Evidence stacked high.
"If even half of this is real…"
"It's bigger than we thought."
Cross studied a financial transfer report.
"This isn't small corruption. This is an international network."
Before he could continue
The door opened without a knock.
His division chief entered.
Two men in dark suits behind him.
Federal identification badges.
"Daniel."
Cross stood.
"Sir."
The chief gestured toward the files.
"This case is no longer under your jurisdiction."
The air froze.
"Excuse me?"
One of the federal agents stepped forward.
"We're formally assuming control of the investigation."
Cross's tone sharpened.
"This evidence came directly to me."
"Exactly," the agent replied coldly.
"And that's precisely why."
Cross stepped closer.
"I've been building this case for years."
His chief's voice hardened.
"It's above your clearance."
"Above the truth?"
Silence.
The second federal agent spoke.
"Turn over all copies."
One of Cross's assistants hesitated.
Cross looked at him.
Then said quietly
"You're stealing a case."
His chief snapped back.
"You're overstepping."
In the end
The devices were surrendered.
The files.
The drives.
The agents left with everything.
Cross remained standing in the empty office.
But he wasn't empty-handed.
He wasn't a fool.
The Message
A notification appeared on his personal phone.
Unknown number.
If you want the truth… 4 PM. Riverside Center.
He read it twice.
Left alone.
Riverside Mall
People moved as usual.
Voices.
Children.
Background music.
Cross stood near the central fountain.
Scanning.
Something felt off.
Too much movement.
A man speaking into a concealed earpiece.
Another on the upper level holding a bag but buying nothing.
Then
A young man bumped into him.
"Watch it."
A whisper in his ear:
"Don't look up."
Cross froze.
"You?"
"Walk."
They moved together.
"There's a sniper to your left."
Before Cross could process
A large ceiling fixture crashed down where he had been standing seconds earlier.
Screams erupted.
Chaos.
In the background, a man reached for a weapon
But suddenly
A subtle puncture touched his neck.
He collapsed, convulsing.
Cross ran.
"They're trying to kill me."
"Yes."
"Why are you helping me?"
The young man paused.
Met his eyes.
"Because we want the same thing."
Before Cross could ask more
He vanished into the crowd.
Edward Lindsay's Office
Edward Lindsay sat behind his elegant desk.
Defending civil liberties by day.
Funding their erosion by night.
The two federal agents entered.
Placed the files in front of him.
"As requested."
Lindsay opened the first folder.
Flipped through the pages.
A faint smile.
"Excellent."
He looked up.
"And the officer?"
"Administratively neutralized."
Lindsay turned toward the window.
"Now… we restore order."
But he didn't know
The officer was no longer alone.
