Chapter 20 - The Forest Chooses No Side

When the hunter becomes prey… he learns the value of light.

Marcus Heller disliked noise.

But Agent Daniel Cross was becoming an uncomfortable one.

Repeated inquiries.

Record requests.

Unusual federal movement.

Heller said to one of his aides:

"If he continues… he'll reach places we don't want touched."

"Do we warn him?"

Heller's gaze turned cold.

"No."

Two days later, an anonymous message reached Cross's email.

Coordinates.

A short note:

"The evidence you're looking for… is at the old site."

He knew the location.

The forest near the burned laboratory.

The case that had never closed in his mind.

He went alone.

He told no one.

Instinct led him.

And curiosity followed.

He entered the forest at sunset.

Cold air.

Heavy silence.

He reached the site.

Fresh footprints.

A small metal cage hidden behind brush.

He barely bent to inspect it

When he heard it.

A low growl.

He raised his head slowly.

One.

Then two.

Then three.

Wolves.

Large.

Lean muscle.

Hungry eyes.

They advanced in measured steps.

He understood.

This wasn't a message.

It was a natural death.

Predators in a forest.

An unfortunate incident.

He raised his weapon.

But three shots would not be enough.

The first wolf stepped closer.

The second circled.

The third moved behind him.

He was boxed in.

"Damn…"

He braced.

Just as his finger tightened on the trigger

A small ampoule landed beside him.

It shattered.

White vapor spread in a low circle.

The first wolf entered the cloud.

Stopped.

Its ears lowered.

It sat.

Then approached...not attacking.

Seeking warmth.

The second followed.

Calmed.

Tail shifting gently.

The third remained outside the vapor's edge.

Unaffected.

Its body tightened.

Ready to leap.

Then

Its gaze changed.

Pupils dilated.

It recoiled.

A sharp howl.

It turned and ran as if chased by something unseen.

Within seconds

It was over.

The vapor thinned.

The first two wolves slowly retreated and disappeared into the trees.

Cross stood stunned.

No footsteps.

No visible savior.

He looked down.

A small slip of paper attached to the broken ampoule.

He read it:

"They want you silenced."

His pulse surged.

Before he could process it

He heard engines.

Blue and red lights cut through the forest.

Police.

Paramedics.

An officer shouted:

"Here! We've got him!"

Cross froze.

Who had reported his location?

He hadn't told anyone.

He looked up toward the treeline.

A strange sensation.

Not danger.

Surveillance.

Before he was escorted out

He heard something else.

Crying.

Then hysterical laughter.

Officers advanced carefully.

They found two men bound near another metal cage.

Clothing tied to organized crime networks.

One sobbing uncontrollably.

The other laughing without restraint.

Beside them ...reinforced collars used for training predators.

One officer muttered:

"They brought the wolves."

Cross stepped closer.

He recognized the symptoms.

Not conventional drugs.

Neurological.

Precise.

Controlled.

He looked again at the paper in his hand.

"They want you silenced."

He whispered:

"And who are you…?"

Elsewhere in the forest,

Ian Vale stood behind the tree line, observing through a compact scope.

Beside him, Derya Aksoy.

She spoke quietly.

"That was a risk."

Ian didn't lower the scope.

"Cross isn't a target."

"Then what?"

"A witness."

She paused.

He added:

"And sometimes… a witness matters more than a victim."

Far away, Marcus Heller received a preliminary report.

"The operation failed."

A long silence.

Then Heller said slowly:

"Then there's a third party."

He did not know

That party was standing in the same forest.

Deciding

Who dies.

And who lives.
