The Watson Mansion was unusually quiet.
Jay lay half-asleep against Keifer's shoulder on the couch, her fingers loosely tangled with his. The lights were dim, and the rest of the family had either gone to bed or drifted off to their own corners of the mansion.
Keiren was asleep nearby, clutching Bato.
Percy had finally stopped talking.
Even the house seemed to breathe slower.
"You're falling asleep," Keifer murmured softly.
"I'm not," Jay mumbled, already half gone.
"You're literally asleep."
"I'm resting my eyes."
He smiled, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"You had a long day."
"CEO announcement… hospital chaos… family dinner…" she mumbled.
"And you still haven't slowed down."
"I don't slow down."
"I know."
She shifted closer unconsciously.
Then—
Her phone rang.
Jay opened her eyes instantly.
Doctor mode.
She answered immediately.
"Jay Mariano."
Her expression changed.
Keifer straightened.
"What happened?" he whispered.
Jay stood already.
"I'm coming now. Prep OR three. Call anesthesia."
She hung up.
"Emergency," she said, already moving.
Keifer stood with her.
"What is it?"
"Seven-year-old. Internal bleeding. Car accident."
She was already grabbing her bag.
"I'll drive you."
"You don't have to—"
"I'm driving you."
She didn't argue.
The hospital lights were bright against the dark night.
Jay rushed inside without stopping.
"Dr. Mariano!"
A nurse handed her the chart while walking.
"Seven-year-old male. Multiple injuries. Blood pressure dropping."
Jay scanned quickly.
"We're going straight to surgery."
She didn't even notice Keifer still beside her.
Until she stopped at the operating room doors.
She turned to him.
"You don't have to wait."
He shook his head.
"I'm staying."
"You could go home."
"I'm staying."
She looked at him for a second.
Then she nodded.
"Okay."
She squeezed his hand briefly.
Then disappeared behind the OR doors.
Time slowed.
Keifer sat outside the operating room.
Alone.
The hallway was quiet except for the distant hum of machines.
Hours passed.
A nurse walked by and recognized him.
"Mr. Watson?"
"Yes."
"You can wait in a private room."
He shook his head.
"I'm fine here."
She glanced at the OR doors.
"You're waiting for Dr. Mariano?"
"Yes."
She smiled softly.
"She's been in there two hours."
"I'll wait."
He didn't move.
Another hour passed.
A group of junior doctors walked by quietly.
One whispered,
"Is that… Keifer Watson?"
"Yes."
"He's still here?"
"He hasn't moved."
They glanced at him again.
Keifer sat calmly, hands folded, eyes occasionally lifting to the surgery light above the door.
Still on.
Still operating.
Another nurse approached.
"Mr. Watson, would you like coffee?"
"No, thank you."
"You haven't eaten."
"I'll eat later."
She nodded quietly.
Because everyone in the hospital knew one thing—
Dr. Jay Mariano was inside fighting for a life.
And the most powerful CEO in the country was sitting outside… just waiting for her.
Five hours later.
The OR light finally turned off.
Keifer stood immediately.
The doors opened.
Jay walked out first.
Her scrubs were slightly wrinkled. Her hair messy. Her eyes tired.
But alive.
She saw him immediately.
"You're still here."
"Of course."
"How long?"
"Since you went in."
"You didn't leave?"
"No."
She stepped closer.
"The surgery was difficult," she said quietly.
"But?"
"He's stable."
Keifer smiled softly.
"You saved him."
Jay exhaled.
"Yeah."
She swayed slightly.
Keifer caught her instantly.
"You're exhausted."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine."
She leaned into him anyway.
Just for a second.
A nurse nearby whispered to another,
"They're so in love."
Jay heard.
But didn't pull away.
Instead, she closed her eyes briefly.
"Thank you for waiting," she murmured.
"Always."
She looked up at him.
"You always say that."
"Because it's always true."
The hallway was quiet.
Soft.
Just the two of them.
Jay reached for his hand.
"Come on."
"Where?"
"Coffee."
"You need food."
"Coffee first."
He smiled.
"Okay."
They walked down the hallway together.
Staff watched quietly.
Because this was something rare.
Not just a brilliant surgeon.
Not just a powerful CEO.
But two people…
Who waited for each other.
Even in the middle of the night.
Even after five hours.
Even when no one asked them to.
And somehow…
That made them stronger than anything else.
