Jose Gonzales stood near the center table inside the investigation division, his broad shoulders tense beneath his dark jacket while he silently observed his detectives working around him. The room had been busy since dawn. Telephones rang continuously, printers produced endless sheets of reports, and several officers moved from desk to desk carrying folders, surveillance photographs, and witness statements. Despite the constant activity, however, the atmosphere remained frustratingly stagnant because the one person everyone needed to find had seemingly disappeared without leaving a trace.
