Chapter 66 - Alice - The Sweet Faerie: Part 3

The manicured garden paths finally surrendered to the severe, polished cobblestones of the central promenade. Merging into the quiet river of students flowing toward the School of Academia's lecture halls, Alice let the noblewomen's vapid chatter wash away.

The memory of Arthur, however, clung to her skin like ash.

Her fingertips sought the intricate braid resting against her collarbone—a physical anchor forged during the grueling trials of her first semester. It grounded her in a time before the silver epaulettes of the Honor Class graced her uniform. Back when she was merely an unblessed girl from the Western Plains, destined to plateau.

Then, she intervened.

The memory bloomed, carrying the sharp, static sting of ozone and crushed mint. Alice stood once more in the cavernous, forgotten wing of the old training halls, her lungs burning from an impressive score on a physical assessment. Ms. Noctiliene materialized from the shadows, her crimson eyes locked onto Alice, pinning her like a captured butterfly, and offered a lifeline woven from an utterly alien methodology.

"The Academy teaches you to view magic as a blunt tool," the silver-haired woman had murmured, her terrifyingly cold hands forcibly realigning Alice's rigid posture. "They demand you recite incantations and memorize sequences, completely blind to the actual meaning behind the syllables." Her voice had carried the weight of something ancient. "They tell you to rely on a blessing. But long before blessings—or humans—existed, magic and abstract meaning walked hand-in-hand."

This philosophy directly defied the ironclad doctrines Head Instructor Ludolf Clive hammered into them. Clive demanded strict geometric translation and rote memorization—depending entirely on an internal vessel to funnel and process the spell. To cast without a blessing was, in the Academy's eyes, an exercise in futility.

But Ms. Noctiliene didn't teach rigid geometry. She taught primordial resonance. She instructed Alice to bypass internal circuitry entirely and plunge straight into the raw, abstract intent of the Magic Language. By speaking the pure meaning of the syllables, Alice commanded the ambient mana in the air to obey her. It was a volatile, high-stakes art. Every cast demanded monumental mental processing, straining her physical body under the crushing weight of true comprehension rather than draining a neat, internal vessel.

Yet, it yielded results. That perilous mastery alone had earned an unblessed commoner her silver epaulettes.

Alice's amber eyes traced the soaring, stained-glass heights of the approaching lecture hall. Who are you, really? Her analytical mind continuously chipped at her mentor's flawless, maternal facade. Beneath that gentle warmth lurked an aura both ancient and suffocating. Ms. Noctiliene held no official faculty rank, yet she glided through the Academy's highest-security sectors like a phantom.

A sudden, jagged suspicion pierced Alice's chest, robbing her lungs of air.

She thought of that tragic night. The ruined, smoldering dormitory. And a chilling detail she couldn't shake: how Ms. Noctiliene had stood perfectly still, her gaze fixed deliberately on that exact dormitory a full minute before the explosion tore through the night.

The Academy's elite guards and the Judicial Board's guest lecturers had mobilized far too late to stop the assassins.

If she had intervened... Alice's steps slowed, the weight of the realization pressing down on her. With that unfathomable, suffocating power... could she have stopped them? Could she have saved Arthur?

Ahead, the massive oak doors of the lecture hall groaned open, spilling a warm, golden radiance across the stone steps. Pulling herself from the abyss of her thoughts, Alice expertly smoothed her features. She erased the calculating tempest behind her eyes, donned her flawlessly bright, harmless smile, and stepped into the light.
