Chapter 21 - The Girl Who Was Never Human

The city moved like nothing was wrong.

Cars passed.

People talked.

Lights flickered across buildings like stars trapped on earth.

And in the middle of it all—

the tower stood.

Silent.

Watching.

Arin could feel it now more clearly than ever.

The pull.

Not just from the gate.

From something inside it.

Something that knew him.

Something that had been waiting.

"You're staring again," the shadow said quietly.

Arin didn't look away.

"It's calling me."

Lira crossed her arms.

"Then maybe don't answer."

Arin finally turned toward her.

"You felt it too."

Lira froze for a second.

Just a second.

But it was enough.

The shadow noticed immediately.

"Oh."

"That's interesting."

Lira looked away.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Arin stepped closer.

"Yes, you do."

The city noise continued around them, but for a moment it felt distant.

Muted.

Like they were standing inside something separate from reality.

"You knew something back in the forest," Arin said.

"When the crystal spoke."

"When the name appeared."

Lira didn't respond.

Her silence said everything.

The shadow leaned in slightly.

"Let me guess… you're not just some random traveler."

Lira sighed.

Slowly.

Then she looked up at the tower.

"I didn't want to say anything yet."

Arin's voice dropped.

"But you were going to."

"Yes."

The wind shifted slightly.

The lights of the tower flickered again.

For a brief second—

its true form almost revealed itself.

Lira stepped back.

Then spoke.

"I'm not human."

Silence.

Arin didn't react immediately.

The shadow smiled faintly.

"Called it."

But Arin's expression didn't change.

"What are you?" he asked.

Lira hesitated.

For the first time since he met her—

she looked unsure.

"Something that shouldn't exist anymore."

Arin felt something familiar in those words.

"Like me?"

Lira looked at him.

"Worse."

Before Arin could ask more—

the tower pulsed.

This time, the illusion didn't just flicker.

It cracked.

A ripple spread across the surface of reality around the building.

People continued walking.

Unaffected.

Unaware.

But the truth beneath it was becoming unstable.

The shadow stepped forward.

"That's new."

Arin felt it immediately.

The gate was reacting to something.

Or someone.

Then—

a figure stepped out from the entrance of the tower.

A man.

Normal.

At least at first glance.

He wore a dark coat, his face calm, almost expressionless.

But his eyes—

his eyes were wrong.

Too still.

Too aware.

He looked directly at Arin.

Even through the crowd.

Even through the illusion.

"He sees us," Lira whispered.

Arin nodded.

"Yes."

The man began walking toward them.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Deliberate.

Like he had all the time in the world.

The shadow crossed his arms.

"I'm guessing that's not a friendly neighbor."

Lira shook her head.

"No."

The man stopped a few steps away.

Up close—

the air around him felt different.

Distorted.

Like reality itself bent slightly around him.

He spoke.

"Arin."

Not a question.

A statement.

Arin's chest tightened.

"You know me."

"Yes."

The man's gaze shifted briefly toward Lira.

Then back.

"You took longer than expected."

Arin frowned.

"Who are you?"

The man tilted his head slightly.

Then smiled.

But it wasn't a human smile.

"I am what remains outside the prison."

The shadow muttered,

"That's becoming a trend."

Arin stepped forward.

"You're connected to the gate."

"Yes."

"And to Vaelreth?"

The man's smile faded.

"For now."

That answer was worse than a yes.

Lira stepped beside Arin.

"What do you want?"

The man looked at her.

For a moment—

his expression changed.

Something like recognition.

Something like surprise.

"You survived."

Lira's face went pale.

The shadow leaned in.

"Oh, this just got interesting."

Arin looked between them.

"You two know each other?"

Lira didn't answer.

The man did.

"She was never meant to exist beyond the fall."

Arin's voice dropped.

"What does that mean?"

Lira whispered,

"Don't."

But it was too late.

The man continued.

"She is not just non-human."

"She is a fragment."

Silence.

Arin felt the word hit like a shock.

"A fragment… of what?"

The man's eyes shifted toward the tower.

Then back to Arin.

"Of the same thing as you."

Everything stopped.

The noise of the city.

The movement of people.

The world itself seemed to freeze for a second.

Arin looked at Lira.

"You're… like me?"

Lira shook her head slowly.

"No."

"I'm what was left behind."

The tower pulsed again.

Stronger.

The illusion cracked further.

For a brief moment—

everyone in the area flickered.

Like shadows.

Like echoes.

The man spoke again.

"The gate is unstable."

"Because you are both here."

Arin's heart pounded.

"What happens if we enter?"

The man's smile returned.

This time colder.

"Then the gate will complete itself."

The shadow laughed quietly.

"And I'm guessing that's bad?"

The man tilted his head.

"That depends."

"On whether you wish to remain… yourselves."

Lira grabbed Arin's arm.

"We can't go in there."

Arin didn't move.

Because the pull was stronger now.

Stronger than ever.

The tower called to him.

The gate.

The key.

Everything.

The man stepped aside.

The entrance of the tower stood open.

Waiting.

"Come," he said calmly.

"Or walk away."

"But know this…"

His eyes locked onto Arin.

"The world will not survive incomplete balance."

The wind stopped.

The city lights flickered.

And for a moment—

Arin could see it again.

The true form of the tower.

The broken gate.

Waiting to be whole.

He took a step forward.

Lira tightened her grip.

"Arin…"

The shadow stepped beside him.

"Well…"

"This is the part where everything changes."

Reader's Question:
