Chapter 14 - The Awakening of the Eleventh Gate

The roar from Willowmist forest echoed across the valley.

Arin stood frozen in the broken square of Ravenhollow, staring toward the distant line of trees. The sound had not been natural. It was too deep, too powerful—like the voice of something ancient finally waking after centuries of silence.

The Watcher turned slowly toward the forest.

"The eleventh gate is opening."

Lira looked at Arin.

"That sounds like something we should probably stop."

Arin nodded.

"Yeah."

The shadow version of Arin leaned casually against a cracked stone pillar.

"Or something we should watch."

Arin ignored him.

The wind around the town began to grow stronger. Dark clouds moved quickly overhead, twisting together as if pulled by an invisible force.

The Watcher stepped forward.

"You must go to the forest."

Arin looked at the armored giant.

"You're not coming?"

"My role is observation."

Lira groaned.

"So the giant ancient gate guardian is basically just a spectator?"

"Yes."

"That's extremely unhelpful."

Arin turned toward the forest.

Even from this distance he could feel something calling him. A strange pull inside his chest.

The balance within him was reacting again.

Light flickered across his hands.

Shadow curled beneath his feet.

The shadow version of Arin straightened.

"You feel it, don't you?"

Arin didn't answer.

But the feeling was undeniable.

The eleventh gate wanted him.

Lira grabbed her bag from the ground.

"Well," she said.

"Looks like we're going on a forest trip."

Arin looked at her.

"You're coming?"

"Of course."

"That thing in the forest might be dangerous."

Lira smirked.

"So are you."

Arin sighed.

"Fair point."

The shadow version clapped slowly.

"Great teamwork."

Arin gave him a sharp look.

"You're not coming."

The shadow tilted its head.

"You sure about that?"

Before Arin could answer, the shadow dissolved into dark smoke and disappeared into the ground.

Lira blinked.

"Okay… that thing is really creepy."

Arin nodded.

"Yes."

The Watcher's voice echoed behind them.

"Hurry."

"If the eleventh gate fully opens, the prison weakens further."

Arin turned one last time.

"You're sure you won't help?"

The Watcher remained still.

"I will watch."

Arin shook his head.

"Fantastic."

Without another word, he and Lira began running toward Willowmist forest.

The journey took nearly an hour.

As they crossed the hills outside Ravenhollow, the air grew colder and heavier.

Dark fog rolled slowly across the ground.

The trees of Willowmist loomed ahead like tall black pillars.

When they finally stepped beneath the forest canopy, the world seemed to fall silent.

No birds.

No insects.

Nothing.

Only the distant rumbling beneath the earth.

Lira looked around nervously.

"I hate this place already."

Arin moved deeper into the forest.

The ground beneath his boots pulsed faintly.

Almost like a heartbeat.

"This way," he said.

"How do you know?" Lira asked.

"I can feel it."

The forest grew darker as they continued walking.

Strange twisted roots spread across the ground.

Some of them looked almost like claws.

The air smelled ancient.

Old.

Forgotten.

Suddenly the ground shook violently.

Lira grabbed a nearby tree to keep her balance.

"Okay that's definitely the gate."

Arin nodded.

The pull inside his chest had become stronger.

They pushed forward through thick trees until the forest suddenly opened into a massive clearing.

Lira gasped.

At the center of the clearing stood a colossal stone structure.

It was even larger than the gate beneath Ravenhollow.

Ancient pillars surrounded the ring like broken teeth.

Dark energy swirled inside the gate's center.

And something was trying to come through.

The ground cracked beneath the pressure.

Arin stepped forward slowly.

"This is it."

Lira stared at the enormous gate.

"How old is this thing?"

Arin looked at the ancient carvings along its surface.

"Older than the town."

The symbols along the ring suddenly began glowing.

The moment Arin stepped closer, the entire structure vibrated.

The swirling darkness inside the gate expanded.

A deep roar echoed from within.

Then something enormous pushed against the mist.

Lira whispered nervously.

"Please tell me that's not another Watcher."

Arin shook his head slowly.

"No."

A massive claw burst through the dark energy.

Stone exploded outward.

The ground trembled violently.

A gigantic creature forced its way through the gate.

It looked like a monstrous fusion of beast and shadow.

Its body was covered in black armored scales.

Long jagged horns curved from its skull.

Its glowing red eyes scanned the clearing.

The creature stood nearly twenty feet tall.

Lira stared in horror.

"Oh… that's bad."

The creature took one heavy step forward.

The ground cracked beneath its weight.

Arin felt the balance inside him surge violently.

Light flared along his arms.

Shadow spiraled around his body.

The creature's glowing eyes locked onto him.

It let out a thunderous roar.

Then it charged.

Lira yelled.

"MOVE!"

Arin jumped aside as the monster slammed into the ground where he had been standing.

The impact shattered several trees instantly.

Lira pulled a small dagger from her belt.

"I'm guessing diplomacy won't work?"

"Probably not," Arin replied.

The creature turned again.

Dark smoke poured from its mouth.

Its claws dug deep into the earth.

Then it lunged forward again.

This time Arin didn't move.

He raised his hand.

The light inside him burst outward like a sudden sunrise.

A powerful shockwave exploded across the clearing.

The creature skidded backward several feet.

Lira stared at him.

"Okay… that was impressive."

But the monster was far from defeated.

It rose again.

Shadow energy gathered around its claws.

Arin could feel something else now.

Not just the creature.

The gate itself was reacting.

The symbols glowed brighter.

The prison was weakening.

If the creature fully escaped…

the gate might open permanently.

Arin clenched his fists.

He stepped forward.

"I guess this is where things get serious."

The monster roared again.

The battle for the eleventh gate had begun.

Reader's Question:

If you were in Arin's place and faced a giant creature from an ancient prison, would you fight it directly… or try to close the gate before more monsters escape?
