Chapter 15 - Chapter 1 New Horizon 001.4 - Controlled Flame (2)

The wind howled across the cliffs.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

Aetherwyn stepped forward slowly, wand already in hand, Aether flowing steadily through him.

Ahead—

The shape moved.

Massive wings unfolded, stretching wide enough to block the light for a moment.

A **Wyvern**.

Not like the drake.

Not even close.

This thing didn't feel wild.

It felt aware.

"…This isn't like before." Aetherwyn said quietly.

The Wyvern stepped forward.

Slow.

Measured.

Its eyes locked onto Aetherwyn—

And stayed there.

_It's not looking at both of us…_

_It picked me._

"…Filo," Aetherwyn said, not looking away.

"…Yeah?"

"…Don't interfere."

A small pause.

"…You sure?"

The Wyvern lowered its stance.

Aether gathered faintly around it.

Aetherwyn exhaled slowly.

"…No."

A beat.

"…But I need to try."

Filo watched him.

Then—

She stepped back.

"…Alright."

A pause.

"…Don't die."

"…Working on it."

The Wyvern moved first.

No warning.

No build-up.

It vanished from where it stood—

Aetherwyn's body reacted before his thoughts did.

"…Aether Focus!"

The world snapped into clarity.

The Wyvern reappeared—

Mid-lunge—

Claws already descending.

_Too fast—_

He shifted—

Not back—

Side.

The claws slammed into the ground beside him—

_SHRAAAM._

The impact cracked the stone.

_That would've killed me._

No time to think.

"…Aether Pulse!"

_THMP._

The shot hit its side—

But barely mattered.

The Wyvern didn't even flinch.

_That did nothing._

It turned instantly.

Tail sweeping—

Fast.

Too fast.

"…Guard!"

Aether locked around his body—

_BOOM._

The impact hit hard.

His arms shook.

His feet slid back—

Stone grinding beneath him.

_It's stronger than anything I've fought._

_This isn't a fight I win by power._

He dropped Guard—

Moved.

The Wyvern lunged again—

Relentless.

"…Think."

He steadied his breathing.

Not panic.

Not reaction.

_Control._

"…Aether Focus."

This time—

Deeper.

The world slowed further.

Not everything—

Just what mattered.

The Wyvern's movement.

The angle of its wings.

The shift in its core.

_There—_

_That's the center…_

"…Aether Pulse."

_THMP._

This time—

He didn't aim for impact.

He aimed for placement.

The shot hit near the chest—

The Wyvern flinched.

Slightly.

_That worked._

It roared—

Not in pain—

In recognition.

"…Good," Aetherwyn muttered.

"…Then we do that again."

The Wyvern changed.

No hesitation now.

It accelerated.

Faster.

Sharper.

More aggressive.

_It's adapting—_

It vanished again.

Aetherwyn didn't chase it.

Didn't turn wildly.

_Where would I go—_

Behind.

He moved—

Barely—

The claw grazed past him—

Close enough to feel the heat of it.

"…Aether Break!"

He didn't fire straight.

He angled it—

Down—

_BOOM._

The blast struck the ground—

The shockwave lifted—

Caught the Wyvern mid-motion—

Disrupting its balance.

_Force it to react._

_Not the other way around._

The Wyvern landed harder this time.

Adjusted.

Watched him.

_It's learning me._

"…Then I learn faster."

Aetherwyn steadied.

Slowed his breathing.

Let everything narrow.

"…Aether Focus."

This time—

He didn't just activate it.

He held it.

Longer.

The strain hit immediately.

Pressure behind his eyes.

Aether pulling tighter.

_Too much—_

_No… hold it—_

The Wyvern moved again.

This time—

Aetherwyn didn't react late.

He moved first.

"…Now."

"…Aether Pulse."

_THMP._

Direct hit—

Core.

The Wyvern staggered.

Actually staggered.

_That's it._

But the moment stretched—

Too long.

The Wyvern roared—

Aether flaring around its body—

_It's about to—_

"…MOVE!"

Filo's voice cut through.

Aetherwyn dropped Focus—

Rolled—

_BOOM._

The blast hit where he stood—

Aether exploding outward in a violent wave.

_That would've killed me._

He stood—

Breathing harder now.

_This isn't clean._

_This isn't controlled._

_This is survival._

The Wyvern charged again.

But now—

It wasn't calm.

It was aggressive.

_That's good._

Aetherwyn stepped forward.

"…Aether Focus."

Not deeper.

Not longer.

Cleaner.

Controlled.

He moved with it.

Not reacting.

Not chasing.

Matching.

"…Aether Break."

He launched it—

Not at the body—

At the ground—

Right before the Wyvern reached him.

_BOOM._

The blast lifted it slightly—

Interrupted its movement—

"…Now—"

"…Aether Pulse."

_THMP._

Direct hit.

Core.

A crack formed.

The Wyvern faltered—

Just enough.

Filo moved.

Fast.

Silent.

One strike.

Clean.

The Wyvern collapsed.

Silence returned.

Only the wind remained.

Aetherwyn stood there.

Breathing hard.

Wand still raised slightly.

"…I didn't beat that."

Filo stepped beside him.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But you didn't die."

"…That's still the goal, right?"

"…For now."

Aetherwyn exhaled slowly.

Looked at the Wyvern.

Then at his hands.

_That wasn't luck._

_That was control._

Not perfect.

Not clean.

But real.

Filo glanced at him.

"…You're starting to understand it."

Aetherwyn gave a small, tired smile.

"…Yeah."

"…I think I am."

Far above—

The clouds shifted.

And somewhere beyond sight—

Something watched.

Not impressed.

But interested.

---

Aetherwyn stood there, breathing hard, wand still raised slightly.

Then—

The system flickered into view.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

---

---

## **[New Insight Gained]**

**"Sustained Focus Threshold Increased"**

- Aether Focus can now be held slightly longer with reduced strain

- Minor improvement to clarity during high-speed engagements

---

Aetherwyn's grip tightened slightly.

_That…_

_That's what changed mid-fight._

Filo crossed her arms.

"…You look like you figured something out."

Aetherwyn nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…It's not about hitting harder."

He looked at the Wyvern again.

Then at his wand.

"…It's about hitting right."

Filo smirked faintly.

"…Took you long enough."

---

The wind didn't follow them back.

That was the first thing Aetherwyn noticed.

The cliffs faded behind them, the pressure easing with each step—but it didn't fully disappear.

Not this time.

"…You're quieter," Filo said as they walked.

Aetherwyn didn't answer immediately.

"…Thinking."

"…That's new."

"…Yeah."

A small pause.

"…Trying to keep it that way."

Filo smirked faintly but didn't press.

The gates of Nolvaris came into view again.

Unchanged.

Steady.

They entered without delay.

The guards nodded.

Recognition again.

That same subtle shift.

Inside, the guild hall was as active as ever.

But this time—

Aetherwyn didn't feel out of place.

_Not comfortable…_

_But not lost either._

"…You're adjusting," Filo said quietly.

"…I think so."

"…Good."

They didn't stop at the main floor.

Not this time.

Filo kept walking.

Straight through.

---

The room was the same as before.

Quiet.

Still.

Unmoving.

Athos stood near the window.

Looking out over Nolvaris.

He didn't turn when they entered.

"…Report."

Filo leaned slightly against the wall.

"…Wyvern confirmed."

"…Greater variant."

"…Engaged."

A pause.

"…Eliminated."

Silence.

Athos turned.

His gaze moved to Aetherwyn.

Not quickly.

Not slowly.

Measured.

"…You fought it."

Not a question.

"…Yeah," Aetherwyn replied.

A pause.

"…Alone."

"…At first."

Athos stepped closer.

Not threatening.

Not relaxed.

Just present.

"…Outcome."

Aetherwyn didn't hesitate this time.

"…I didn't win."

A pause.

"…But I didn't lose either."

Silence held.

Then—

A faint shift.

"…Correct."

Aetherwyn blinked.

_That's…_

"…You recognized your limit," Athos continued.

"…And acted within it."

Another pause.

"…That's rare."

Filo glanced at Aetherwyn briefly.

Didn't say anything.

But the look said enough.

_He noticed._

Athos's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…What did you learn?"

Aetherwyn thought for a second.

Not rushing it.

"…Power doesn't matter if I can't use it right."

A pause.

"…And if I try to match something stronger head-on…"

He shook his head slightly.

"…I lose."

Athos didn't respond immediately.

"…And?"

Aetherwyn's grip tightened slightly.

"…If I control the fight instead…"

A breath.

"…I can survive things I shouldn't."

Silence.

Then—

"…Good."

That was it.

But it landed.

Athos stepped back slightly.

"…Your growth rate is still increasing."

Filo raised a brow.

"…You tracking that now?"

"…I always was."

Aetherwyn frowned slightly.

_That's not comforting…_

"…You're approaching threshold," Athos added.

Aetherwyn's attention snapped back.

"…Threshold?"

"…Tier advancement."

A pause.

"…Soon."

Aetherwyn felt that.

Not excitement.

Not fear.

Weight.

_That's a big jump…_

"…Don't rush it," Filo said.

"…Break it wrong and you'll feel it for a long time."

"…Noted."

Athos turned slightly.

"…The Wyvern."

Filo's expression shifted.

"…Yeah."

"…It wasn't natural."

"…No."

"…Too controlled," Aetherwyn added.

Athos nodded faintly.

"…That confirms it."

A pause.

"…The placements are escalating."

Aetherwyn frowned.

"…Placements again…"

"…You're being guided," Athos said.

"…Not attacked."

Silence.

That didn't feel better.

"…Why?" Aetherwyn asked.

Athos looked at him.

"…To measure response."

A pause.

"…And to prepare you."

That—

Landed differently.

"…Prepare us for what?" Aetherwyn asked.

A brief silence.

"…Something larger."

Not dramatic.

Not exaggerated.

Certain.

Athos turned back toward the window.

"…For now, you continue."

"…Training."

"…Missions."

"…Adaptation."

A pause.

"…Because when it begins…"

His voice lowered slightly.

"…you won't have time to learn."

Silence filled the room.

Aetherwyn looked down at his wand.

Felt the Aether flowing through it.

Cleaner now.

Stronger.

But not enough.

Not yet.

He tightened his grip.

_Then I just have to get there faster._

Filo pushed off the wall.

"…Come on."

Aetherwyn glanced at her.

"…Where to?"

A faint smirk.

"…Back to work."

He let out a small breath.

"…Of course."

They stepped out of the room.

Back into the noise.

Back into motion.

But this time—

Aetherwyn didn't feel like he was following.

He was moving forward.

And somewhere beyond Nolvaris—

Something was still watching.

Waiting.

For the moment—

He would finally be ready.
