Chapter 7 - hmm

The Fortress of Glass

"You're safe here," Felix whispered, tucking a silk duvet around her. "The guards are SAS-trained. The kitchen staff has been vetted three times over. No one knows this house exists except my inner circle."

Gloria looked at him, her eyes wide and haunted. "Your inner circle includes people who talk to Marcus. And Marcus talks to the Board. Felix, the whole world thinks I'm a predator. Did you see the comments? They're calling the baby a 'pawn.'"

Felix sat on the edge of the bed, his face like granite. "Let them talk. Tomorrow, we announce the truth. I've already contacted a private lab. We're doing a prenatal paternity test. When that paper shows my name, and we cross-reference the date with your medical records proving you were drugged, the narrative changes."

"Flora won't let that happen," Gloria said, her voice trembling. "She's like a cornered snake. When she has nothing left to lose, she bites."

The Shadow in the Hallway

Outside the room, the estate was silent, save for the rhythmic humming of the security system. But in the shadows of the lower kitchen, a phone vibrated.

One of the new guards, a man Felix had hired in a hurry to bolster the perimeter, stepped into the pantry. He looked at the screen.

Unknown: Is she there?

Guard: Confirmed. Suite 4. Felix is with her.

Unknown: Wait for the shift change at 3:00 AM. Leave the service gate unlatched. You'll get your 10 million once she's out of the way.

The guard deleted the message and adjusted his holster, his face devoid of emotion. To him, this wasn't about sisters or love—it was just a transaction.

A Moment of Peace

Inside the suite, the tension slowly ebbed away as Felix held Gloria. For a moment, they weren't a billionaire and a fugitive; they were just two people bound by a night of chaos and a future they hadn't asked for.

"I used to wonder why I couldn't stop thinking about you," Felix said, his voice low and melodic. "Even when I thought I was with the woman from that night—even when I thought it was Flora—I felt like I was searching for someone who was right in front of me."

Gloria leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady thrum of his heart. "I was so scared of you, Felix. I thought you were just another powerful man who took what he wanted. I didn't realize you were hurting too."

"I was a fool," he admitted, kissing the top of her head. "But I'm a fool who's finally awake."

He reached down, his large hand spreading across her still-flat stomach. "We're going to be okay. I promise."

The Breach

At exactly 3:02 AM, the red light on the service gate flickered from red to green. A black van, its headlights extinguished, rolled silently onto the gravel path.

Flora stepped out, wearing a tactical jacket and a mask, but her eyes—wide and glittering with a manic fever—were unmistakable. She wasn't alone. She had spent the last of her stolen money on two mercenaries who didn't care about the Vance name.

"Find her," Flora hissed, pulling a small, silver canister from her pocket—incendiary gas. "If I can't have his legacy, I'll burn it to the ground with her inside."

Upstairs, the silent alarm on Felix's bedside table began to pulse a dull, rhythmic blue.

Felix's eyes snapped open. He didn't reach for his phone; he reached for the drawer beneath the nightstand.

"Gloria," he whispered, his voice cold and sharp as a blade. "Get in the panic room. Now."

"What? Felix, what's happening?"

"The perimeter is breached," he said, pulling out a sleek, black handgun. He looked at her, his gaze intense. "I love you. Now move!"

As Gloria scrambled toward the hidden door behind the wardrobe, the sound of a window shattering echoed from the floor below. The "Love Without a Heart" was over—now, it was a fight for the life they had just discovered.
