The Inter-Academy Tournament was a spectacle of light, sound, and raw mana. The main arena, a colossal dome capable of seating hundreds of thousands, thrummed with the excited chatter of spectators and the nervous energy of participants. Holographic displays projected the faces of the Academy's champions, their ranks and skills proudly displayed. Han-sol, standing backstage with Kai and Luna, felt a strange mix of apprehension and exhilaration. This was a stage far grander than any Tower floor he had ever navigated.
His System, however, was already buzzing. The entire Tournament System, a complex network of interconnected simulations, scoring algorithms, and environmental controls, was a rich tapestry of glitches. [TOURNAMENT SYSTEM: OVERLAID (EXTERNAL)], [SUB-SYSTEMS: COMPROMISED (MINOR)], [K.A.E.L.E.N. SIGNATURE: DETECTED (FAINT)]. Kaelen's presence was subtle, almost imperceptible, but it was there, a ghost in the machine, waiting to strike.
"Remember the plan," Yuna's voice crackled through their comms, a small, almost invisible earpiece Han-sol had been given. "Han-sol, your priority is to detect Kaelen's interference. Luna, provide real-time analysis and identify potential targets. Kai, protect Han-sol and engage any physical threats. Do not engage Kaelen directly unless absolutely necessary. Our goal is to neutralize his influence, not to confront him head-on."
"Understood," Kai rumbled, his massive hands flexing. Luna merely nodded, her eyes already scanning the holographic displays, her fingers dancing across her data-pad.
The opening ceremony was a dazzling display of mana-infused acrobatics and synchronized spellcasting. The various Academy teams, each representing a different city or region, marched onto the arena floor, their uniforms gleaming, their banners waving proudly. Han-sol, Min-jun, and Jin-woo, along with two other F-Ranks from their class, were part of the Neo-Seoul Academy's contingent, though they were relegated to the back, their F-Rank insignias almost invisible amidst the sea of higher-ranked Awakened.
Min-jun, surprisingly, seemed to have found a newfound confidence. His mana control had improved dramatically, and he carried himself with a quiet dignity. Jin-woo, ever the showman, was already preening, basking in the attention, despite his earlier apprehension. Han-sol felt a pang of pride. He had, in his own subtle way, helped them grow.
As the ceremony concluded, the first phase of the Tournament was announced: The Gauntlet. Teams would be dropped into a simulated jungle environment, where they would have to navigate treacherous terrain, overcome environmental hazards, and defeat waves of simulated monsters to reach a designated extraction point. The first ten teams to reach the extraction point would advance to the next phase.
"This is Kaelen's playground," Han-sol muttered, his eyes fixed on the holographic projection of the jungle. He could already see the faint blue lines of glitches, subtle distortions in the simulation's code. [GAUNTLET SIMULATION: ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS - AMPLIFIED], [MONSTER SPAWN RATE: INCREASED], [NAVIGATION PROTOCOL: COMPROMISED].
"He's trying to overwhelm them," Luna's voice whispered in his ear. "Chaos. Disorientation. He wants to expose the System's weaknesses by pushing it to its breaking point."
"Then we'll just have to push back," Kai growled, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Let's show this Kaelen what happens when you glitch a Berserker."
Their team, designated "Team Phoenix," was among the first to be teleported into the simulated jungle. The air was thick with humidity, the sounds of exotic wildlife echoing through the dense foliage. Han-sol immediately activated his Error Detection, his vision overlaying the vibrant jungle with a shimmering blue network of glitches.
"Alright, Han-sol, what do you see?" Kai asked, his hand already on the hilt of his massive mana-infused axe.
"The navigation protocol is compromised," Han-sol reported, his eyes scanning the blue lines. "The most direct path is riddled with amplified environmental hazards. We need to take a detour." He pointed to a faint, almost invisible blue line, a hidden pathway that bypassed a glitched quicksand pit. [QUICKSAND PIT: DEPTH - EXTREME (GLITCHED)].
They moved quickly, Han-sol guiding them through the glitched jungle, bypassing traps and hazards that would have ensnared other teams. They encountered waves of simulated Jungle Stalkers, their aggression parameters artificially elevated. Kai, a blur of raw power, cleaved through them with brutal efficiency, his axe leaving trails of shimmering pixels in its wake. Luna, a silent shadow, moved through the foliage, her mana-infused daggers dispatching any stragglers with surgical precision.
Han-sol, meanwhile, was constantly working, his mental energy flowing into the simulation's code. He would subtly rewrite the aggression parameters of the monsters, making them slightly less lethal, or reduce the intensity of a glitched mana storm, allowing them to pass through safely. Each rewrite was a drain, but he was learning to manage his mana, to make his rewrites more efficient.
"We're approaching a glitched river," Luna reported, her voice calm. "The current is artificially amplified. Crossing it will be dangerous."
Han-sol saw the error. [RIVER CURRENT: VELOCITY - EXTREME (GLITCHED)]. Kaelen was trying to drown them, to wash them away. But he also saw a faint blue shimmer around a series of ancient, moss-covered stones in the middle of the river. [ANCIENT STONES: STABILITY - COMPROMISED (MINOR)].
"The stones," Han-sol said, focusing. "They're glitched. They're supposed to be unstable, but I can rewrite their stability. We can use them to cross."
[REWRITE ANCIENT STONES: STABILITY - COMPROMISED TO (OPTIMAL)? Y/N]
He slammed 'Y'. The blue light flared, imperceptible to anyone else, around the stones. The [STABILITY - COMPROMISED] error vanished, replaced by [STABILITY - OPTIMAL]. The stones, once treacherous, were now firm and unyielding.
"Go!" Han-sol urged. Kai, with a powerful leap, landed on the first stone, then the next, his massive frame barely disturbing the water. Luna, light as a feather, danced across them with effortless grace. Han-sol followed, feeling the solid ground beneath his feet. They had bypassed another of Kaelen's traps.
As they neared the extraction point, Han-sol's System flared with a new, urgent warning: [EXTRACTION POINT: SECURITY PROTOCOL - COMPROMISED], [AMBUSH: IMMINENT].
"Kaelen's waiting for us," Han-sol muttered, his eyes narrowing. "He's trying to ambush us at the extraction point." The Tournament had just begun, and Kaelen was already playing dirty. But Han-sol, the Debugger, was ready. He was ready to rewrite the game, one glitch at a time. The Gauntlet was just the first test, and the real battle, he knew, was yet to come. The Tournament had begun, and Han-sol was about to show the world what a true Sovereign of the Glitched Tower could do.
