Chapter 49 - Christmas Letters

Chapter Forty-Nine

Christmas Letters

Snow fell softly across the streets as Christmas evening arrived.

Lanterns glowed warmly in windows while church bells echoed through the cold winter air.

Inside her home in Wilson, Clare sat near the fireplace while her parents prepared the Christmas dinner.

The warm smell of baked bread and fruit filled the room.

Just as Clare reached for a book, someone knocked on the door.

Her mother opened it and returned with a small envelope.

"A letter for you."

Clare looked surprised.

"For me?"

She recognized the handwriting immediately.

Daniel.

She opened the letter and began reading.

Clare,

If you are reading this tonight, then the letter arrived on time. I thought Christmas would be quieter after everything that happened this winter. But somehow I feel this year will be remembered for a long time.

Clare smiled slightly.

Her father noticed.

"Good news?"

"Just a Christmas letter from a friend," she replied.

Her mother laughed softly.

"Then read it properly before dinner."

Clare continued reading while the fire crackled warmly beside her.

Outside, snow continued to fall gently over the quiet town.

Far away, in a grand English palace, Christmas dinner had already begun.

Jack sat at the long table surrounded by nobles and relatives.

The celebration was loud and formal, as usual.

A servant approached and placed a small envelope beside his plate.

"A letter for you, sir."

Jack raised an eyebrow and opened it.

Inside was a short message.

Jack,

I hope Christmas in England is not too unbearable. Try not to break anything during dinner.

Jack immediately recognized the writing.

Clare.

He chuckled quietly.

Across the table, his older brother noticed.

"What's so funny?"

"Nothing."

His brother leaned forward suspiciously.

"Let me guess… another one of your strange friends?"

Jack folded the letter calmly.

"At least my friends know how to write something interesting."

His brother scoffed.

Jack leaned back in his chair, still smiling slightly as he read the letter again.

For the first time that evening, Christmas dinner didn't feel quite as boring.

In France, the café was filled with laughter and candlelight.

Customers gathered around warm drinks while Emma arranged fresh desserts on the counter.

Noah wiped her hands on a cloth when Emma handed her an envelope.

"This arrived earlier today."

Noah opened it curiously.

Inside was a cheerful Christmas message.

Noah,

I hope the café is busy tonight. Christmas in Wilson feels calm this year, but I'm sure France is much livelier.

Noah smiled warmly.

"Clare sent it," she said.

Emma nodded knowingly.

"Of course she did."

Noah placed the letter carefully beside the counter and looked around the lively café.

Music, laughter, warm lights.

"Yes," she said softly.

"Christmas is definitely lively here."
