Chapter Forty-Six

Clare's POV — Returning to Wilson

The journey back to Wilson felt very different from the journey we had taken only days earlier.

When we had left the kingdom, the streets were silent and the air was filled with uncertainty. No one knew what would happen.

But now the women walked together openly.

The cold winter wind still moved through the snowy roads, yet the atmosphere felt lighter.

Some women talked excitedly about their future.

Others laughed softly with friends they had traveled beside.

For the first time since leaving Wilson, hope could be heard in their voices.

I walked near the front of the group, my cloak wrapped tightly around my shoulders.

Beside me walked my mother.

She watched the long line of women behind us carefully.

"You realize something," she said thoughtfully.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"You just convinced an entire kingdom to change a law."

I sighed softly.

"When you say it like that… it sounds frightening."

My mother smiled gently.

"Sometimes the right thing to do is frightening."

Her words stayed in my mind as we continued walking.

Behind us, several young girls were speaking excitedly.

"Do you think we can really study law now?"

"Of course we can," another girl replied.

Their hopeful voices made me smile slightly.

Soon the tall gates of Wilson appeared in the distance.

Home.

But something unexpected waited there.

A crowd had gathered near the entrance of the town.

Men from the kingdom stood along the road.

Fathers.

Brothers.

Shopkeepers.

They watched quietly as the women approached.

For a moment, many of the women beside me slowed their steps.

No one knew what reaction to expect.

Then an elderly man stepped forward.

He looked toward the women… then at me.

"My daughter walked with you," he said.

My heart skipped slightly.

"I hope that did not cause trouble," I replied carefully.

The man shook his head.

"No."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"I'm proud of her."

A quiet murmur spread through the crowd.

Soon other voices spoke.

"My sister went with you."

"My wife."

"My daughter."

Instead of anger, many of them looked relieved.

Word had already spread across Wilson about what had happened in France.

About the protest.

About the King cancelling the law.

About the student who had challenged the Queen.

The attention made me feel a little embarrassed.

My mother leaned closer to me and spoke softly.

"You didn't just speak for yourself."

"You spoke for all of them."

Snowflakes drifted gently through the air as we entered the streets of Wilson.

Women returned to their homes.

Families reunited.

Laughter slowly filled the town again.

As I walked beside my mother, I realized something important.

The journey to France had changed many things.

Not only for the kingdom…

But also for me.

Because the agreement with the Queen still remained.

And sooner or later, I would have to face her again.
