Chapter 13 - The Architect of Ruin

The heavy, metallic scent of Silas's vaporized life force still hung in the air of the Shadow Sanctum. Leo stood over the 'Engine of Ruin,' a Tier-4 power core that thrummed with a violent, mechanical orange glow. It was a stark contrast to the deep violet of his own Obsidian mana, a piece of high-tier technology ripped from the heart of the Association's military machine.

[New Item: Engine of Ruin (Tier-4 Core) detected.] [Intelligence 25 reached. 'Base Integration' unlocked.]

"It's screaming," Seraphina whispered, her fingers hovering inches from the pulsing engine. Her violet eyes were wide, reflecting the clash of orange and purple light. "The mana inside this thing... it's trapped. It wants to explode."

"Then we'll give it a purpose," Leo said, his voice resonating with his increased Intelligence. He didn't just see a battery; he saw a blueprint.

He knelt by the crack in the concrete where the Obsidian Core was buried. With a sharp exhale, he slammed the Engine of Ruin into the pulsing mana-well. The reaction was violent. A shockwave of raw energy blasted outward, throwing Seraphina back and causing the black crystalline walls of the warehouse to groan under the pressure.

[Integrating Tier-4 Core... Success.] [Base Level: 2 -> 3 (The Obsidian Fortress).] [New Feature: Automated Defense Turrets (Shadow-Bolt).] [New Feature: Mana-Well Overclocking.]

From the ceiling, black crystal stalks descended, twisting and fusing with the scavenged scrap metal Leo had collected. They formed four sleek, predatory turrets in each corner of the warehouse, their barrels glowing with a hungry, dark light. They didn't need operators; they were connected directly to Leo's mind.

"Status report," Leo commanded, his consciousness expanding to every corner of the district.

[Global Notification: A Bounty of 50,000,000 Credits has been placed on 'Leo: The Shadow Monarch'.] [Threat Level: Calamity (Local).]

"Fifty million," Leo chuckled, a dark, humorless sound. "They're terrified. They aren't sending heroes anymore; they're sending the vultures."

"The Mercenary Kings will be the first to arrive," Seraphina warned, her wings unfurling as she sensed the shift in the city's atmosphere. "They don't care about the Association's rules. They'll burn this entire district down just to smoke you out."

Leo stood up, his Monarch's Aura now so dense it distorted the light around him. He could feel the eyes of the city's underworld turning toward Sector 4. The "Messenger" he had sent had done her job too well—the fear was spreading, and where there was fear, there was a desperate need for the strong to prove their dominance.

"Let them come," Leo said, walking toward the wide, reinforced gates where the Obsidian Sentinel stood, its frame now bulkier and reinforced with Silas's iron plating. "They think they're hunting a man. They don't realize they're walking into the mouth of a god."

He turned to Seraphina, his eyes glowing with a violent, predatory heat. The Shared Mana link was humming, amplified by the base's new Tier-4 core.

"We need to test the new defenses," Leo purred, pulling her close as the first sirens of the mercenary fleets began to wail in the distance. "And I think I know just the 'guests' to invite to the opening ceremony."
