âShe stood abruptly, wiping her hands on her dress one final time. "That's all I know," she said. "That's all I can tell you."
âShe turned to leave, then paused at the door. "For what it's worth," she said without looking back, "I'm sorryânot for what I did, but for believing it would work. I was such a fucking fool."
âAnd then she was gone.
âLeaving me alone with Cheese and the Core pulsing in my chest and the knowledge that Sylpha had orchestrated everything. The numbness in my chest spread until it engulfed everything.
â"Sylpha?" I called, and even my internal voice quivered.
âShe did not hide in the little nook where she resided in my head. "Yes, Aurora?" she replied.
