Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Clara Bennett

The city skyline glittered like a thousand distant promises as Alexander Hale stepped out of the elevator, suit immaculate, tie slightly loosened. The hospital memory still gnawed at him — a strange emptiness whenever he thought of the woman who called herself his wife.

His phone buzzed again, insistent. He glanced down.

Clara Bennett: "I heard what happened. I'm coming. Stay awake for me."

His pulse quickened, not in fear, not in anger… but in a confusing tug he didn't understand.

Meanwhile, Elena had returned home, her apartment feeling smaller, colder than ever. Every object seemed to whisper memories he no longer had — the coffee mugs they shared, the framed photos from their honeymoon… all reminders that she had been invisible in the man's memory.

She tried to focus on work, anything to keep her mind from spinning. Yet her phone vibrated relentlessly with messages from Victor:

Victor: "Clara is on her way. Stay calm, but be prepared. She won't hold back."

Elena's stomach tightened. She knew Clara Bennett's reputation. Beautiful, cunning, relentless — the kind of woman who could charm a boardroom or a billionaire's heart without breaking a sweat.

She looked at her reflection in the window.

Three years of marriage gone from his memory… and now Clara was coming to take advantage.

Back at the hospital, the valet pulled up to the entrance. Clara stepped out of the sleek black car, every inch the picture of wealth and confidence. Her long blonde hair shimmered under the morning sun, and the designer dress she wore hugged her figure perfectly. But it was her smile — dazzling, self-assured — that made Alexander's chest tighten in ways he couldn't explain.

"Alexander," she breathed as she approached, eyes scanning him with familiarity and a touch of accusation. "I heard about the accident. Are you alright?"

Alexander's mind froze. She knew him. She had known him. And somehow, she fit perfectly into the world that now seemed foreign.

"I'm… functional," he replied carefully.

Clara's gaze shifted, noting the white bandage across his forehead and the guarded way he held himself.

"You've changed," she said softly. "But in a good way. Still… distant."

Alexander blinked, trying to recall why her presence tugged at something inside him.

Later, Elena arrived at the hospital to check on him. She froze in the hallway when she saw Clara sitting across from Alexander, laughing at a comment he had made. The sound pierced her chest like cold steel.

She reminded herself: he doesn't remember me. He can't.

Clara's eyes flicked toward Elena, sharp and calculating, sizing her up instantly.

"Well, this must be the mysterious wife," Clara said lightly, as if it were a trivial remark.

Elena's grip on her bag tightened.

"Hello," she said, voice steady. "I'm Elena Hale."

Clara smiled — predatory yet polite.

"Of course," she said sweetly, though there was nothing sweet about it. "You must be… new."

Alexander's attention wavered. His fingers twitched slightly as he glanced from Clara to Elena. A flicker of something — perhaps recognition, perhaps confusion — passed across his eyes. But it disappeared as quickly as it came.

Elena realized with a sinking heart that this was a battle she might already be losing.

That evening, Alexander walked home with Clara in tow. Their conversation flowed easily, comfortable, familiar… a contrast to the cold silence he had shared with Elena earlier.

He laughed at one of her jokes and felt something stir — a warmth he hadn't expected.

Meanwhile, Elena sat in the darkened apartment, phone in hand. She stared at the messages that were piling in from friends checking on Alexander.

He doesn't remember me.

He doesn't love me anymore.

And yet, somewhere deep inside, she refused to let go.

Because no matter how much he had forgotten, she had not.

Cliffhanger Moment:

Alexander returned to the apartment for a late-night review of Hale Group files. He paused in the doorway, catching sight of Elena sitting silently on the sofa.

He opened his mouth to speak.

"Why are you here?" he asked, calm but puzzled.

Elena looked up, eyes shimmering.

"Because someone has to remind you… who you married."

And for the first time since the accident, Alexander Hale felt an unexpected, unsettling tension he could neither explain nor ignore.
