Forty extra minutes of nothing but black-dirt cornfields and a radio station that spent its time oscillating between static and heartbreak-heavy country music. Demi didn't complain. She just sat with her notebook open, sketching—not visions this time, just observations. Little charcoal-smudge renderings of the things we'd passed: the rusted water tower in Millhaven, the peeling paint of a barn, the girl in the red coat.
She'd drawn the girl three times.
Each version had a different detail—a different tilt of the head, a sharper glint in the eye—like Demi was trying to solve a puzzle that hadn't quite finished loading in her brain. I didn't ask about it. I was too busy feeling the pressure in the air.

Population: four hundred and change. It had one motel with a flickering 'VACANCY' sign and one diner that doubled as a bar after six PM—an efficient use of real estate that I respected.
I dropped our bags in a room that smelled faintly of lemon wax and old upholstery. Two beds, a functioning heater, and a TV that actually hummed to life. I told Demi to crash while I went on a supply run.
The diner was a warm pocket of light in the middle of the dark plains. It smelled like burnt coffee, grease, and the specific, weathered comfort of a place that had been feeding the same three families for fifty years.
I ordered at the counter. Burgers, fries, and two coffees I definitely didn't need but bought anyway as a tribute to my caffeine-dependent mortal shell.
While I waited, I took a breath. For the first time since the cafeteria exploded, the air felt… normal. No oily residue. No dead patterns. Just the peaceful, boring rhythm of a town being a town. I hadn't realized how tight my chest was until my shoulders finally dropped an inch.

I looked.
He was drawing the sky. Or trying to. He kept scrubbing at a section of clouds with a pink eraser, redoing the lines, and then huffing in frustration.
"The light's wrong," he muttered, loud enough for me to hear over the sizzle of the grill.
"It's because you're drawing cumulus clouds," I said before my filter could kick in. "But you're shading them like they're stratus. They don't hold the sun the same way."
He looked up. He looked annoyed, then curious, then squinted at me like I was a math problem he was close to solving. "How do you know?"
"I know clouds," I said. Which was the cosmic understatement of the millennium.
He looked at his page, then back at me. Slowly, he turned the sketchbook around.
I went still.
It wasn't just a weather study. It was a storm—a massive, cathedral-scale supercell rendered in graphite. In the center of the swirling dark rain and jagged diagonal strokes was a figure. A silhouette standing in the heart of the gale, arms outstretched, lightning spiraling from his fingertips like thread.
Below the drawing, in careful, heavy block letters: *HE'S COMING BACK.*
I looked at the kid. He looked at me. Something shifted in the air between us—not recognition, exactly, but the thrum of a tuning fork hitting the right note.
"You're him," he said. It wasn't a question. It was a verdict.
"I don't know what you mean," I said, though my voice lacked conviction.
"I dreamed you," the boy whispered. "Twice. There's a storm, and you're in the center of it, and the things in the dark are screaming because they're afraid of you." He paused, his eyes searching mine. "Are you a superhero?"
"No."
"Are you something else?"
I thought about lying. I thought about the simple, quiet mercy of letting a twelve-year-old in Nebraska finish his dinner without the weight of knowing the world was fraying at the seams.
"Something else," I said.
He nodded. This was acceptable to him. "Is it going to be okay?"
I looked at the drawing—at the version of myself that was still whole, still powerful, still a King.
"Working on it," I said.
He seemed satisfied. He picked up his pencil and looked at the clouds again. "The shading thing? Show me?"

I sat down on the stool next to him.
I don't know why. I had food getting cold on the counter and a partner waiting in a motel. But this kid was sitting in a diner at 9:00 PM drawing my memories, and the least I could do was give him the right technique.
I picked up his spare pencil. The lead felt light in my hand, but as I touched the paper, I felt a tiny spark—a ghost of the power that used to command the atmosphere.
"Cumulus clouds are three-dimensional," I explained, my voice dropping into a rhythmic, ancient cadence. "You're treating them like a flat shape. They have a top—bright, direct light where they kiss the sun—and a base that's flat and dark, because that's where the moisture gathers. The sides catch the light in tiers. See?"
I drew a small cluster next to his figure. I didn't correct his work; I just gave him the map.
He watched with the focused intensity of a scholar. We sat there for fifteen minutes, two strangers in a Nebraska diner, talking about the anatomy of a thunderstorm.
When I finally stood up to grab my bag of lukewarm food, he was already revising his clouds. Getting them right.
"Hey," he said without looking up.
"Yeah?"
"The stuff that's afraid of you." He kept drawing, his pencil scratching a confident arc. "It should be."
I gripped the paper bag. "Thanks, kid."
