[Camp Jaha — South Gate — Day 103, 0600]
Lincoln came through the gate at 0600 on the third day after the trial, covered in eastern grove road dust, with Octavia three paces behind him on a borrowed Trikru pony.
Ethan was at the gate by accident.
He had been doing the perimeter walk since 0500 — the one he had started doing in Ch.15 when the wall was first complete and had been doing since whenever the Voices were louder than operational noise, which was most mornings now. The walk's specific purpose was: keep moving, let the camp's early-morning sounds replace the catalog's ambient volume. The camp's early sounds at 0600 on Day 103 were the hybrid's low cycling hum from the south kiln, the third nettle crop at its fourth week, the ration station starting its morning count, Wick's workshop beginning the shift-change sequence.
He heard the gate's south approach and turned.
Lincoln's horse. Lincoln's posture on the horse, which was the posture of someone who had ridden the eastern grove road for three days and had been riding in the Trikru cavalry formation for forty-odd days before that and rode without using the saddle as much as without needing it. He was very still in the way of someone who had made a decision about how they were going to carry themselves before they arrived and was carrying themselves that way.
Octavia was behind him. Not together — three paces, which was the Coalition liaison distance, the same distance Lincoln had maintained between himself and Ethan in the army formation. Intentional.
Wells was at the ledger-archway.
He had the ledger open. He was at the archway because that was where he was most mornings — doing the daily intake notation before the formal breakfast period. He had been there before Ethan arrived for the perimeter walk and was simply there now.
He did not speak.
Lincoln dismounted.
He handed the reins to the gate-duty guard without looking at her. He turned to face Ethan with the specific fullness of someone who had prepared for this moment — had probably been preparing it since somewhere on the grove road, had decided on its shape and was now performing the shape as designed.
He inclined his head three centimeters.
Not more. Not less. The Trikru formal-politeness gesture for an equal one did not love — the one he had used at the bridge meetings when he was translating between Ethan and Anya in the early months, the one that meant I recognize your standing; I do not expand it. He had used it then as professional protocol. He was using it now as something that had hardened from protocol into nature.
He said: "I am here."
Three words. The Compass had been right about the shape of this — the minimum viable speech of someone who had chosen to continue in the same world as a person they could not entirely trust.
Ethan's hands were cold in the morning air. The perimeter walk always left him cold at the hands because he was outside for forty minutes and the camp's fires were not up to full heat until 0700 and his coat was field-grade, not warm-grade. He registered this and then put it aside.
He inclined his head three centimeters. The same depth. Not more.
"Welcome back," he said.
Lincoln held his eyes for two seconds. The specific two-second hold of someone who was checking whether the answer had been given correctly — whether the welcome contained warmth it wasn't supposed to have, or absence that would require adjustment. It contained neither. Ethan had spoken in the same register Lincoln had used: minimum viable, neither cold nor false.
Lincoln was satisfied.
He moved toward the camp's interior.
Octavia passed Ethan on the left side. She did not stop. Her face was the face she wore when she had done something difficult and had done it correctly and had no more processing available for outside commentary. She gave him a single nod — the acknowledgment, not the warmth. The same register.
She went after Lincoln.
Wells, at the archway, wrote the return entry.
Ethan watched him do it from across the yard. Wells's handwriting was compact and legible — he had learned to write small because the ledger pages were a finite resource and the list of things requiring notation was not finite. The return entry: Lincoln kom Trikru / Octavia kom Skaikru / returned Day 103 / status: active Coalition liaison. Approximately twenty words.
Wells closed the ledger.
He looked at Ethan for one second.
He walked past him.
No pause. No expression of anything that required words. Just: the ledger is updated, the return is recorded, I witnessed it, I am walking to the next thing.
This was the specific love Wells had been practicing since Ch.3 — the love that expressed itself as bookkeeping, as the reliable maintenance of the accurate record, as the presence at the archway before anything else needed to be there.
Ethan turned back to the perimeter walk.
The camp's morning sounds continued without interruption. The hybrid's hum. The shift-change sequence at Wick's workshop. The ration station count. One hundred and three days of Camp Jaha sounding like itself.
He walked the south wall to the east corner, the east corner to the north gate, the north gate back to the south. The Voices ran at their background catalog volume. Lincoln was somewhere inside the camp now, in the space that had been built to accommodate him, that was his by the same right that it was Ethan's: the right of having built it together.
The cold-residue was permanent.
He had always known it would be. Some things that broke could be repaired. Some things that broke became the new structure — the load-bearing wall that was cracked but standing and would bear load differently than it had before and would never bear load exactly as before.
He finished the perimeter walk at 0648.
He went to the command tent.
