Chapter 77 - CHAPTER 77: WALK THE CHAMBERS WITH THE ONE WHO CO-SIGNED

[Mount Weather — Level 5 Marrow Chambers — Day 99, 2000]

The copper smell reached them at the stairwell, before they opened the Level 5 access door.

Not strong — the Mountain's ventilation system had been running on partial capacity since the reactor shutdown, and the partial ventilation had been doing what ventilation did with residue: moving it, not removing it. The copper smell was the Mountain's Level 5 at the end of a program that had run for thirty years, and the ventilation had been moving it around for six hours, and it was still there.

Clarke walked beside Ethan and did not speak.

Indra walked behind them. She had come without being asked — had fallen in behind them at the Level 3 stairwell with the specific silent-determination of someone who had decided to do something and had not checked whether the invitation was extended. Ethan had not turned to acknowledge her. The acknowledgment was in not turning.

He opened the Level 5 door.

The chambers were a row — seven doors on the left wall, four on the right. All open. The harvesting equipment inside each chamber was specific in the way that specialized medical equipment was specific: built for one purpose, evident in its purpose to anyone who spent twenty seconds understanding its geometry. The chambers themselves were clean, or as clean as they had been when the Coalition arrived — the Mountain's program had been maintained, which meant the maintenance had been ongoing until 1400 when the pulse fired.

Clarke looked into the first chamber.

She looked for approximately four seconds.

Then she looked at Ethan.

He walked to chamber four.

The CPE prompted him.

[SYSTEM: Quest available — Catalog the Chamber. Objective: Document Mountain marrow extraction operations for Coalition medical record.]

He closed it.

The refusal was the same architecture as Ch.43 when the CPE had offered the quest for Mira's death and he had refused it then too. Documenting this place as a quest was not the right shape. The right shape was what he was doing now, which was standing in it.

He said: "Yoss."

The chamber held the word the way rooms held words — briefly, then not.

He waited ten seconds.

He said: "Mira."

Not the Mira from the medbay. A different Mira — a delinquent who had been taken in the Reaper ambush before Ch.50, whose Voice had arrived in the catalog at the same interval as the others, whose name he had not said aloud until now.

He waited.

"Tann."

Pria's older brother, who had been in the marrow chambers when the pulse fired. Who had been planted as a background character since Ch.7 when Pria had appeared at the fire duty and had mentioned an older brother in the engineering deck. Thirty-three days of not knowing which chamber. Now knowing.

He waited.

"Tian." He stopped. "She was not a delinquent. She was Maya's."

Clarke had not flinched at any of the names.

She was standing two paces to his right, looking at the chamber's interior, with her face in the expression she wore when she was processing information that was going to stay with her for a very long time. The face she had worn when he had said hold the timeline in the command tent, the face she had worn in the eastern grove when the bell rang.

He had been watching Clarke's face for 90 days and could read its registers the way you read a compass: the direction was always north, but the specific declination told you how far from north you actually were.

She was very far from north right now. Not lost — far from it. Knowing exactly where she was and what the distance meant.

---

At the corridor's far end, Indra stopped.

She did not turn. She was facing the corridor's terminal wall — the Mountain's bedrock, the surface that had been the Mountain's oldest wall, present before any of the construction above it.

She placed her hand on Ethan's shoulder.

Fifteen seconds.

He kept still. The hand was not gentle or firm. It was the pressure of a hand that was carrying something and had put part of the carrying onto the nearest available surface. She had fought beside him for thirty-eight days and had been his procedural rival for sixty and had watched him hold the Mountain's assault while running the Coalition's political architecture from a command tent, and she did not say anything for fourteen of the fifteen seconds.

On the fifteenth second she spoke in Trigedasleng. Four words.

He understood them. Lincoln had taught him enough.

"My three. Now your four."

He did not turn.

She removed her hand.

She walked to the stairwell.

He stood in the corridor for a moment. The copper smell was everywhere, distributed through the ventilation, occupying the Level 5 air the way something settled into a place over time. He had been naming costs for ninety-eight days. The rotational gesture — three circles, Ch.55, Ch.61, Ch.67 — had been building toward this. Three daughters lost to Mountain raids. The completeness of her grief had been visible since the bridge meeting and had been named only now.

Her grief had a number.

His had a different number.

Both numbers were real.

Clarke came to stand beside him at the corridor's end.

"I am not going to be able to sleep," she said, "until the names stop." She said it without the medical register she sometimes used when she was processing and didn't want to be seen processing. She said it in her own voice, the one that didn't have a register on it, the one that came out when something was true enough that the register fell off. "I think the names don't stop. I think we live with the names now."

He looked at the corridor.

"Yes," he said.

She turned toward the stairwell.

He followed.
