Maya's POV
The war room was silent except for their breathing.
Kaden looked at her like she was the only thing keeping him from falling apart completely. His hands found her face. His thumbs traced her cheekbones like he was trying to memorize her.
Then he kissed her.
It wasn't gentle. It wasn't asking permission. It was desperate and consuming and raw. Like he was drowning and she was the only oxygen left in the world.
Maya kissed him back because in this nightmare place, he was the only thing that felt real.
His hands moved down her back. Her fingers tangled in his hair. They stumbled backward until the war room table was against her spine. Maps scattered to the floor. Tactical charts got crushed under them.
They didn't make it to a bed.
They didn't need one.
