Chapter 195 - Full Circle

Morning departure carried symbolic weight that routine travel hadn't.

Route 1 stretched before them, the same path they'd traveled seven months ago, heading south from Viridian toward licenses that would begin everything. Now they traveled north, returning to where the journey would reach its Kanto conclusion.

"Same road," Kiyomi observed. "Different direction."

"Different us," Miyuki added.

The metaphor was obvious enough that no one needed to elaborate.

The drive proceeded peacefully through landscape that autumn had transformed.

Leaves displayed golden coloring that summer hadn't permitted. The seasonal change that departure had preceded now approached its conclusion, nature's cycle continuing regardless of human concerns.

Wild Pokémon exhibited behaviors that winter's approach demanded. Pidgey flocks moved south in formations that instinct directed. Rattata hoarded supplies that cold months would require. Everything prepared for challenges that seasonal change would bring.

"Migration patterns," Kiyomi noted with academic interest. "The same species we saw heading north in spring are now returning south."

"Circle of seasons," Miyuki observed. "Everything returns eventually."

The original campsite appeared with recognition that memory provided.

Seven months ago, they'd stopped here for their first night of travel, nervous rookies whose licenses barely felt real. The clearing hadn't changed, but the people who occupied it had transformed beyond what that first night could have predicted.

"Right here," Kasumi said, standing where her tent had been. "I barely slept. Too excited about everything ahead."

"I worried about Ryu's egg the entire night," Miyuki recalled. "Checking temperature constantly."

"I catalogued every wild Pokémon sound I heard," Kiyomi admitted. "Already documenting before anything significant had happened."

"And I wondered if I was ready," Sasuke said quietly. "Whether I'd measure up to Itachi's legacy."

Memories flooded with intensity that seven months' distance had built.

"Remember when Ryu was just an egg?" Miyuki asked, her voice soft with nostalgia.

The Bagon who had hatched from that egg had become Shelgon, then finally Salamence, fully evolved Dragon-type whose wings now carried her across skies that the egg couldn't have imagined.

"Remember my first Contest prep?" Kasumi added. "I spent hours practicing routines that seem so basic now."

Five ribbons decorated her collection. Halfway to Grand Festival qualification. Championships won against opponents who had trained for years longer.

"Remember the first ruins?" Kiyomi contributed. "That simple shrine near Vermillion? I thought it was significant."

Now published researcher. Academic recognition approaching professorial status. Discoveries that would reshape understanding of ancient human-Pokémon relationships.

"Remember being scared?" Sasuke finished. "Wondering if seven months would be enough?"

Seven badges now. One remaining in Kanto. Growth measured in victories that departure couldn't have guaranteed.

Evening brought campfire that nostalgia demanded.

The flames illuminated faces that had matured in ways that mirrors couldn't capture. Experience showed in expressions that had been untested seven months ago. Confidence had replaced uncertainty.

"Favorite memories," Kasumi suggested. "What stands out across everything we've done?"

"Ryu hatching." Miyuki answered first. "Holding that shell as cracks appeared. Watching life emerge that I'd helped nurture. Nothing else compares."

"First ribbon win." Kasumi's smile held joy that achievement couldn't diminish. "Proving I belonged. That Coordinator dreams weren't just fantasies."

"Underwater ruins." Kiyomi's expression became contemplative. "The submerged city. Relicanth's memories. Understanding that history was deeper than anyone had documented."

"Every gym battle taught me something." Sasuke's response covered more territory. "Sakumo taught respect for experience. Kabuto taught strategy under pressure. Hiashi taught that environments can be changed. Mei taught that type advantages aren't guarantees."

"But also the small moments," Miyuki added quietly.

"Cooking together." Kasumi looked at Sasuke. "Meals that became rituals."

"Stargazing on Route 13." Kiyomi's gaze went skyward. "Understanding scale."

"Laughing at nothing." Miyuki smiled. "Just being happy to be together."

"Pokémon playing." Kasumi watched Victini curled contentedly nearby. "Their joy when we stopped for breaks."

"Morning routines." Kiyomi's analytical mind found pattern even here. "The rhythms we developed without discussing."

"Simple joys." Sasuke's voice held understanding that complicated emotions had recently obscured.

Victini chirped softly, apparently agreeing.

The Victory Pokémon that had joined them early in the journey now rested with contentment that their family had earned.

"This is family," Miyuki said. "Chosen bonds that mean everything."

"Romance complicated things," Kasumi acknowledged. "But friendship is eternal. That won't change regardless of outcome."

"Commitment to each other," Kiyomi added. "Beyond romantic love. Whatever form relationships take."

"Family by choice," Sasuke finished. "That's what we built. That's what matters."

The agreement felt different from their earlier conversation, not postponement of something avoided, but affirmation of something already secured.

Whatever happened with hearts, their connection was permanent.

Morning revealed Viridian City on the horizon.

The massive metropolis sprawled across landscape that seven months ago had seemed overwhelming. Their first major city experience, where confusion had been constant and everything felt too big.

Now it was just another city.

Known. Manageable. Approachable.

The Pokémon Center accommodations reflected their veteran status.

Extended stay arrangements. Premium facilities that experience had earned. Staff who recognized names that regional attention had made familiar.

"Two weeks planned," Sasuke confirmed during check-in. "Final Kanto gym battle. Then decisions about what comes next."

The receptionist processed their registration with efficiency that fame hadn't disrupted.

"Onoki's been expecting challengers since the eruption coverage. He follows regional news."

"Expecting me specifically?"

"Not by name. But trainers who defeat Mei tend to reach Viridian eventually. He prepares accordingly."

The room that evening hosted planning that the next phase demanded.

"Final Kanto badge," Sasuke summarized. "Onoki's Ground-type gym. Then we have choices."

"Johto immediately?" Kiyomi asked. "Or complete any remaining Kanto objectives?"

"Saffron Contest is available," Miyuki noted. "For Kasumi's sixth ribbon, if desired."

Kasumi considered. Five ribbons secured. Three more needed for Grand Festival. Saffron's Contest would be familiar, she'd competed there already.

"Maybe after Viridian," she decided. "Depending on timing."

"Decisions approaching fast," Kiyomi observed. "Route to Johto. Badge order there. Contest locations."

"Championship timeline," Sasuke added. "Silver Conference registration. Qualifying requirements."

Everything accelerated as their journey approached its middle stages.

Seven months had brought them to Kanto's final gym.
