Chapter 71 - Coastal Road South

The morning they left Cerulean City arrived with perfect weather, clear skies, mild temperature, gentle ocean breeze carrying salt and possibility. Sasuke finished his final pre-departure checks on the Mobile Home while the others gathered their belongings and made certain nothing essential was left behind.

Two weeks in Cerulean had been productive. Kasumi's Contest victory and ribbon. Sasuke's gym badge and battle that had already become regional news. Countless smaller moments, training sessions, meals together, conversations that deepened bonds between all four travelers.

But the road called. Fourteen more cities awaited, each with its own challenges and opportunities.

"Everyone ready?" Sasuke called from the driver's seat, running through the spatial compression RV's startup sequence.

"Ready," Miyuki confirmed from the passenger seat, her breeding journal open on her lap as she reviewed notes on Bagon's development patterns.

"Ready!" Kasumi called from the living area couch, her Contest ribbon carefully stored in its display case alongside space reserved for fifteen more.

"Ready," Kiyomi added, already absorbed in her tablet research about Vermillion City's historical sites.

Victini bounced excitedly in the space between driver and passenger seats, chittering about new adventures. The Victory Pokemon loved travel, each new location meant new experiences, new Pokemon to meet, new foods to try.

Sasuke engaged the drive system, and the Mobile Home pulled smoothly out of the Pokemon Center's parking area. They navigated through Cerulean's morning traffic, the city slowly waking as they departed. Past the Contest Hall where Kasumi had made history. Past the Gym where Sasuke had defeated the Demon of the Mist. Past restaurants where they'd shared meals and shops where they'd bought supplies.

"Going to miss this city," Kasumi said wistfully, watching through the window as Cerulean receded behind them.

"We'll probably return someday," Miyuki replied. "Contest circuit and gym challenges create cyclical patterns. People often revisit cities for advanced competitions or rematches."

"Different when you return," Kiyomi observed without looking up from her tablet. "You're never the same person who first arrived. The city stays constant, but you change."

Philosophical morning thoughts. Sasuke appreciated how their group could shift between tactical planning, casual conversation, and deeper discussions without forced transitions. Four people comfortable enough with each other to be authentic.

Route 5 stretched ahead, a well-maintained highway connecting Cerulean to Saffron City. But they wouldn't go east toward Saffron; instead, they'd take Route 6 south toward Vermillion. The coastal route rather than the inland path.

"Route 6 is longer," Sasuke had explained during planning sessions, "but it offers better training opportunities. Ocean access for Water-types, Electric Pokemon attracted to coastal storms, more varied wild encounters."

Nobody had argued. The journey wasn't just about reaching destinations quickly, it was about experiences along the way.

As they merged onto Route 6, the landscape transformed. The northern coast around Cerulean had been rocky and dramatic, cliffs meeting ocean in violent collisions. But here, heading south, everything softened. Gentle beaches replaced sheer drops. Palm-like trees appeared, their broad leaves swaying in constant breeze. The temperature increased noticeably, enough that Sasuke adjusted the RV's climate control.

"It's subtropical down here," Kiyomi explained, sensing their collective observation of environmental change. "Southern Kanto has different climate patterns than northern regions. More tropical influence, warmer waters, ecosystem adapted to higher temperatures."

The Pokemon reflected this shift. Through the RV's windows, they could see wild Water-types playing in the surf, Chinchou with their glowing antennae creating light shows, Lanturn drifting peacefully, schools of Remoraid practicing their water gun attacks on each other in playful combat.

"Stop!" Miyuki suddenly requested, pointing toward a small inlet visible from the highway.

Sasuke pulled the RV onto a scenic overlook designated for travelers. "What is it?"

"Bagon. Ryu needs training." She was already heading toward the door, Pokeball in hand. "Ocean environment will help with his development. Dragon-types benefit from diverse terrain exposure, and he's been restless lately."

They all exited the RV, stretching after the morning's drive. The inlet was beautiful, clear water sheltered from stronger ocean currents, sandy beach perfect for training, a few other travelers taking advantage of the rest stop.

Miyuki released Bagon. The small Dragon-type materialized with an excited cry, his blue scales gleaming in sunlight. Ryu immediately ran toward the water's edge, fascinated by the ocean. As always, his eyes were drawn upward, watching the Wingull and Pelipper soaring above the waves with undisguised longing.

"I know," Miyuki said gently, crouching beside her Pokemon. "You want to fly. But you're not ready yet. First we need to make you strong enough that evolution happens naturally."

Bagon grumbled his usual complaint but accepted the reality. He'd been training constantly since hatching, determined to reach the strength needed for evolution. The little Dragon-type's dedication was admirable even when it led to frustration.

"Let's practice swimming," Miyuki suggested. "Dragon-types need to be comfortable in all environments. Water training will help develop the muscles you'll need later."

While Miyuki worked with Bagon in the shallows, the others took advantage of the break. Kasumi released her Pokemon team, letting them play in the gentle waves. Gardevoir remained close to her trainer, protective instincts unchanged since the Contest, but the others scattered to enjoy the water.

Butterfree fluttered above the surf, occasionally dipping low enough for wing tips to touch water. Espeon preferred staying on the beach, sunbathing on warm sand. Glaceon waded into deeper water, her Ice-type nature allowing her to create small ice platforms to rest on. Togekiss soared above everything, clearly delighted by ocean breezes perfect for aerial maneuvers.

Sasuke sat on the beach with Victini, both watching Miyuki's training session. Bagon was attempting to paddle through the water with determined strokes, his small limbs working hard to propel his relatively heavy body. The little Dragon-type's perseverance was evident in every movement.

"He's growing quickly," Sasuke observed to Miyuki as she waded back to shore. "How long until evolution?"

"Hard to say precisely. Bagon evolve based on experience and strength accumulation, not specific level requirements." Miyuki toweled off, watching Ryu continue practicing. "But he's close. Maybe a few weeks? Definitely before we reach Johto."

Bagon emerged from the water, shaking himself like a Growlithe. Despite the exhaustion from swimming practice, he immediately looked upward again, watching a Wingull coast by on air currents. The longing was almost painful to witness.

Victini chirped a question, gesturing to Bagon with one small paw. The question was clear.

Why couldn't the little Dragon-type fly if he wanted to so badly?

"Evolution requirements," Sasuke explained, knowing Victini could understand complex concepts. "Bagon dreams of flying from the moment they hatch. They train and grow stronger, eventually evolving into Shelgon. That middle stage is frustrating, they gain defensive armor but lose mobility. Only when they've built enough strength can they evolve into Salamence and finally achieve flight."

Victini looked thoughtful, processing this. Then he chirped again, gesturing to himself. As a Mythical Pokemon, Victini had never needed to evolve, he'd always been this form, always been powerful.

"You're lucky," Sasuke acknowledged. "Born complete. But Pokemon like Bagon... their journey is different. The struggle, the frustration, the eventual triumph when they finally fly, that makes the achievement meaningful."

The Victory Pokemon seemed to understand. He hopped down from Sasuke's shoulder and approached Bagon, who was now attempting to jump high enough to catch wind currents. Victini demonstrated one of his own aerial maneuvers, a graceful loop that made flying look effortless.

Bagon watched with intense focus, clearly trying to memorize every movement for when he could finally fly himself.

Kiyomi had wandered toward the inlet's rocky section, examining tide pools with scientific interest. She crouched beside one particularly large pool, tablet out, taking photos of the ecosystem contained within.

"Come look at this," she called without turning around.

Sasuke joined her, curious. The tide pool was remarkable, perhaps ten feet across and three feet deep at its center. Within that small space existed an entire functioning ecosystem. Corsola fragments formed tiny reef structures. Staryu clung to rocks. Small Tentacool juveniles drifted peacefully. Even a Shellder was visible, buried partially in sand at the pool's bottom.

"Microcosm of ocean life," Kiyomi explained, taking more photos. "Everything here exists in interdependent balance. The Corsola provide structure, the Staryu clean debris, the Tentacool control small organism populations, the Shellder filters water. Remove one element and the entire system destabilizes."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because it's a metaphor." She finally looked up at him, golden eyes sharp with insight. "Our group works the same way. Four people with different skills, goals, personalities. But together we create something stable and functional. Remove one element and everything shifts."

"That's very philosophical for examining tide pools."

"Archaeology teaches you to see patterns across scale. What's true for civilizations is often true for ecosystems, relationships, everything." She stood, brushing sand from her pants. "Point is, don't underestimate how important each person's contribution is to collective success."

Before Sasuke could respond, Kasumi's voice called out. "Lunch! Who's hungry?"
