Chapter 67 - Cascade Badge Battle

The morning of the gym battle arrived with overcast skies and the smell of salt heavy in the air. Sasuke woke before dawn despite having slept reasonably well, his body already preparing for the challenge ahead through increased adrenaline production.

He went through his morning routine with mechanical precision, stretching, meditation, light breakfast that wouldn't sit heavy in his stomach. Victini sensed the battle atmosphere and remained unusually quiet, understanding this was a significant moment for his trainer.

By eight AM, the entire group was awake and preparing. Miyuki made sure Sasuke ate enough food while Kasumi provided the specialized berries she'd prepared for Venusaur.

"Remember," Kiyomi said as they prepared to leave, "Zabuza will test your honor before testing your strength. Stay respectful even if he provokes you. That's how you earn his acknowledgment."

"I remember."

The walk to Cerulean Gym felt longer than it had during registration. The facility loomed larger today, more imposing, its reputation suddenly very real. This was where twenty-three consecutive challengers had failed. Where the Demon of the Mist had established absolute dominance.

The lobby was more crowded than before. Word had spread about the challenge, Itachi's younger brother facing one of Kanto's most feared gym leaders. Media representatives had already claimed prime positions. Trainers hoping to learn from watching an Uchiha battle. Fans of both Sasuke and Zabuza creating a charged atmosphere.

"There's even more people than at my Contest," Kasumi pouted as they navigated through the crowd.

"Your Contest success brought attention," Miyuki explained. "Media outlets are now following our group. 'The Coordinator who changed Contest culture and the Trainer aiming for Championship', that's the narrative they're building."

"No pressure," Sasuke said dryly.

A gym official found them in the crowded lobby. "Sasuke Uchiha? Please follow me. Your companions can access the challenger support section, premium seating with clear sightlines to the battlefield."

They were led through corridors that gradually transitioned from standard construction to transparent walls showing the bay beyond. Schools of fish swam past. Tentacool drifted by with trailing tentacles. A massive Gyarados patrolled in the distance, probably a gym Pokemon used for training rather than challenges.

The challenger preparation room was sparse, benches, healing station, tactical display showing battlefield layout. Sasuke had thirty minutes before the scheduled battle time.

"We'll be right there," Miyuki said, squeezing his shoulder. "You've got this."

"Show them Uchiha strength," Kasumi added with a confident smile.

"Make history," Kiyomi concluded simply.

They left, and Sasuke was alone with his thoughts and his Pokemon. He released Venusaur, the massive Grass-type materializing with a determined rumble. The Pokemon had been preparing for this battle as intensely as his trainer.

"This is it," Sasuke said, checking Venusaur's conditioning one final time. "Everything we've trained for. Zabuza's strong, his Kingler is nearly unbeatable, and the battlefield favors Water-types completely. But we have advantages he doesn't expect. Grass-type moves. Non-visual senses. Three days of specialized preparation."

Venusaur growled acknowledgment, flower on his back opening slightly in anticipation.

"More importantly, we fight with honor. No tricks, no exploitation, just pure skill and mutual respect. That's how we earn his acknowledgment."

A knock on the door. "Five minutes, challenger."

Sasuke recalled Venusaur and stepped into the corridor leading to the main arena. The sound hit him first, thousands of voices creating a wall of noise that vibrated through the floor. Then the light as he emerged into the arena proper.

The battlefield was everything the specifications had promised and more. A massive pool perhaps a hundred feet across and forty feet deep, with floating platforms at various heights creating three-dimensional combat space. Underwater sections were visible through transparent walls, water currents creating visible flow patterns. Mist generators sat dormant around the arena's perimeter, waiting to be activated.

The stands were packed, capacity crowd of fifteen thousand all focused on the challenger's entrance. Cameras from multiple news outlets were positioned for optimal angles. Digital displays showed his name and information alongside Zabuza's.

Miyuki, Kasumi, and Kiyomi sat in the challenger support section, third row center. Victini perched on Miyuki's shoulder, bouncing with nervous energy. All three women looked confident, their faith in him visible even from across the arena.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" The announcer's voice boomed through the sound system. "Welcome to Cerulean Gym! Today's challenger has earned badges from Pewter City and Vermillion City. He comes from the legendary Uchiha Clan of Blackthorn, son of Dragon Master Mikoto Uchiha, younger brother of current Indigo League Champion Itachi Uchiha!"

The crowd's reaction was mixed, some cheering the family name, others skeptical that he could live up to that legacy.

"Facing him is our Gym Leader, the man who has defended Cerulean's honor for three months with a perfect record. Twenty-three consecutive victories. The reformed warrior who values honor above all else. The Demon of the Mist, Zabuza Momochi!"

The opposite entrance opened, and Zabuza emerged.

He looked even more intimidating in the full arena lighting. Tall and powerfully built, wearing what looked like modified combat gear adapted for gym leadership. The bandages covering the lower half of his face created an aura of mystery and danger. His visible eye swept across the arena with predatory assessment before settling on Sasuke.

They met at center arena for the traditional pre-battle protocol. Up close, Zabuza radiated barely contained violence, someone who'd seen real combat and could return to that mentality instantly if needed.

"Sasuke Uchiha," Zabuza's voice was deep and controlled. "Your brother Itachi spoke highly of you when he visited my gym last month. Said you'd trained in Crown Tundra under your father's instruction. Said you'd grown stronger than he'd expected."

"Itachi is generous with praise."

"Itachi is honest about capabilities. If he says you're strong, you're strong." Zabuza's visible eye showed calculation. "But strength alone won't win here. This battlefield negates most conventional advantages. Trainers who rely on power over strategy fail within minutes."

"I understand."

"Good. Then let's see if that understanding translates to execution." Zabuza stepped back to his position. "Standard gym rules: you may use up to six Pokemon, I use one. Victory by knockout, surrender, or referee judgment. The battlefield will actively oppose you, mist, water currents, platform instability. Adapt or lose."

"Understood."

The referee, a woman in a wetsuit designed for potential water rescue, raised flags. "This is an official Kanto League Gym Challenge! Cascade Badge on the line! Trainers, take your positions!"

Sasuke walked to his mark at one end of the pool. Zabuza took his position opposite, standing on a platform that floated at water level. Between them, fifty feet of water and floating obstacles.

"Trainers ready?" The referee's voice carried clearly despite the crowd noise. "Send out your Pokemon!"

"Kingler, show them why challengers fear the water!"

"Venusaur, prove our preparation!"

Both Pokeballs released simultaneously. Zabuza's Kingler materialized directly in the water with a massive splash, the crustacean Pokemon's shell gleaming under arena lights. Even in base form, it was enormous, easily eight feet tall with claws the size of cars.

Sasuke's Venusaur appeared on a floating platform, the Grass-type's bulk causing the platform to sink slightly before stabilizing. The flower on his back opened fully, already gathering solar energy from the arena's artificial lighting.

"Begin!"
