Chapter 61 - 61 Engagement

The Rustic Hearth had closed its doors to the public today, reserved exclusively for an intimate, unforgettable celebration. Outside, it looked just as quaint and inviting as ever, with one charming new addition: a wooden display board at the entrance, inscribed in elegant, swirling script. "We Are Engaged – Let's Celebrate! Signed, Harry & Natasha." It was a simple touch, understated yet filled with excitement, hinting at the joy within.

Stepping inside, guests were greeted by a transformed atmosphere. The interior was warm and glowed under soft as golden fairy lights draped across exposed beams, casting a gentle, intimate light across the room. Floral arrangements of blush and deep red roses adorned each corner, filling the air with a delicate fragrance that mingled with the rich scents of the food spread. Balloons floated in playful clusters, some with tassel tails cascading down, others confetti-filled, and all adding a whimsical charm to the rustic ambiance.

The tables were draped in fine white linen, with velvet runners in soft, forest green to accentuate the romantic decor. Each centerpiece held a mix of roses, baby's breath, and eucalyptus, lending a classic touch to the setting.

The self-serve food counter was a masterpiece in itself, with Harry and Dorea's hard work on full display. A spread of delights covered the table: charcuterie boards with artisanal cheeses and cured meats, heart-shaped pizza slices, delicate shrimp cocktails, salmon bites, and crispy chicken tenders. For a fun twist, they'd included Harry and Natasha's favorite comfort foods too, like mozzarella sticks, mini crab Rangoon, and pigs in blankets. Every dish was carefully crafted, to tell a story of the couple's personalities.

Nearby, the bar gleamed with an impressive selection of spirits, expertly curated for the occasion. Tony and Charles took turns at bartending, showing off their skills. Neon signs over the bar and food table humorously directed guests to "Grab a Drink & Cheers" and "Satisfy Your Appetite," adding to the lighthearted atmosphere.

In the other side of the room, where the stage wsa stood a display that could only be described as grand: a magnificent balloon arch, framing the words "We Are Engaged" in bold, lighted letters, with a few glittering diamond-ring ornaments inscribed with "H & N" nestled around it.

Littered throughout every corner, small touches had been added to remind everyone of the bond being celebrated tonight, from framed photos of Harry and Natasha's journey together to little H & N initials scattered like easter eggs among the decorations. The Rustic Hearth radiated with charm and love, capturing the elegance and warmth of the day.

The guest list may have been small, but the atmosphere was brimming with elegance and attention to detail. Each of the men wore tailored suits in sapphire blue, a color chosen to mirror Natasha's eyes. The suits were accented with thoughtful touches: small emerald green lapel pins to honor Harry, polished cufflinks with intricate patterns, and even pocket squares embroidered with silver accents.

The women, meanwhile, looked radiant in emerald green dresses, each uniquely styled to suit its wearer yet unified in its tribute to Harry's own eye color. Pepper had chosen the theme with great care, and each piece reflected her attention to detail. The women wore matching emerald earrings, and their outfits were complemented by silver jewelry that sparkled gently in the dimmed, romantic lighting of the venue.

Scattered around the venue, the partygoers seemed to settle into a warm rhythm, enjoying this rare moment of peace and joy together. Near the food table, Natasha and Clint were helping the mischievous Barton kids pile their plates with bite-sized treats. Lila, ever-curious, attempted to reach a bowl of shrimp cocktail just beyond her grasp, and Clint scooped her up, laughing as she grabbed it with triumph. Cooper, meanwhile, eyed the heart-shaped pizza slices, darting around the table and narrowly avoiding a collision. Clint glanced at the wobbling table with mild concern.

"They're going to take the whole spread down," he muttered, watching as Cooper narrowly avoided toppling a plate of Pigs in Blankets.

Natasha, amused, shook her head. "Don't worry," she said, leaning back against the table. "Harry put a little charm on it—won't spill a thing, no matter how many times they bump into it." She reached over to adjust Lila's tiny emerald hair clip, then nudged Clint playfully. "Besides, the food table has withstood worse."

Near the bar, Steve was in conversation with Dorea and Charlus Richard, who were both eager to make him feel welcome. Charlus had a warm glint in his eye as he shared memories of his time in the army, where he had a chance to meet and work with Peggy Carter.

"Lieutenant Peggy was something else," Charlus said with a fond smile. "One of the finest we ever had. She had this way of inspiring everyone around her, you know? Always brought up your name, Steve, and the stories of the Howling Commandos. Made sure everyone knew what true bravery looked like."

Steve's expression softened, a wistful smile playing at his lips. "She always had a way of pushing people to be their best," he murmured, his voice tinged with gratitude. "I missed so much... It means the world to hear about her from others who knew her."

Charlus clapped Steve on the shoulder warmly. "Well, there are plenty of stories. She was always straightforward, no nonsense—but had a laugh that could bring a room to life."

Beside them, Bruce was deep in conversation with Yao, sharing stories of his travels in India. They were discussing about his time in Himachal Pradesh and the meditative techniques he'd learned from Buddhist monks in the serene, misty mountains.

"They taught me to channel my focus," Bruce said thoughtfully, "to find stillness even when emotions felt overwhelming"

Yao nodded with approval. "Discipline of the mind can be one's greatest ally. But there is always room for refinement. The balance is in understanding that stillness is not silence; it is control."

Bruce listened closely as Yao gave him pointers, adding subtle techniques to deepen his practice. "It's not just about always about one or the other, Bruce," Yao explained. "It's about understanding it, making it a part of your identity. Your two sides are you and only in the harmony of both can you be the best version of yourself"

Bruce nodded in confusion. "Thank you, Yao, but I do not understand what you are talking about."

Next to the stage, Tony and Pepper were chatting animatedly with Audrey Nathan about her recent performance with the Portland Orchestra. Pepper was in full pitch mode, offering Stark Industries as a sponsor for the orchestra. "With your talent, Audrey, and a little backing, the orchestra could have everything it needs to thrive," Pepper said enthusiastically.

Audrey looked a little hesitant, glancing at Coulson. "It's a wonderful offer, truly. I'm just not sure..."

Phil, ever supportive, gave her a gentle nudge. "It's a fantastic opportunity, Audrey. You deserve it and Stark Industries would be lucky to support you."

Tony chimed in with his usual flair. "Think of it as a mutual benefit. You get the support, we get some much-needed culture. Everybody wins." He grinned, raising a glass to her, adding a touch of charm that seemed to reassure her.

On the other side of the stage, Rhodey was making an unusual request to Harry. "Look, Harry," Rhodey began, a grin spreading across his face, "I know this might be a big ask, but after flying that Quinjet during the whole New York chaos well, let's just say I wouldn't mind having one of my own. Off the record, of course. Just a little something for 'services rendered.'"

Harry raised an eyebrow, smirking. "You want me to convince SHIELD to let you 'borrow' a Quinjet permanently?"

Rhodey laughed, leaning in conspiratorially. "Let's just say I'd keep it safe, tucked away in my personal hangar. No one would even know it's gone. And hey, it'd be great for emergencies. Plus, think of it as a little thank-you gift for dealing with Loki and the aliens."

Harry chuckled, clearly amused. "I'll see what I can do, but I'm not promising miracles. Those things don't exactly come with an owner's manual."

"Hey, I know a good pilot," Rhodey winked.

On the stage, Laura was posing cheerfully as Felicia Hardy snapped a few last-minute photos. As the designated photographer for the evening, Felicia was more than happy to indulge Laura's excitement, capturing the lively energy and charm of the party's hostess.

After glancing over the images with a satisfied smile, Laura took a deep breath, looking over the crowd as everyone settled in. With a nod to Felicia and one last sweep of the room to ensure everything was just right, Laura gave the signal and began the festivities, her warm smile radiating across the room as she prepared to welcome everyone to this special celebration.

"Good evening, everyone, and let's get this party started!" Laura called out into the microphone, her grin wide as laughter and applause rippled through the crowd while everyone found their seats.

"Alright, for those who don't know, I'm Laura Barton, and tonight, I have the pleasure of being your host. I'm also the self-appointed, thoughtful elder sister of these two," she said, gesturing toward Harry and Natasha, who shared an amused look, "while my husband, Clint, is the honorary loud and proud younger brother. After what has to be the most pointlessly dramatic breakup in history," she teased, "these two knuckleheads have finally pulled their heads out of their ass and finally figured things out." She winked as chuckles echoed around the room.

Laura raised her glass. "So, to Harry and Natasha! On behalf of all of us here, we're thrilled for you both and are so grateful to be here celebrating with you as you finally—finally—take this next step together. So, everyone, please join me in a toast to the happy couple!"

The room erupted in cheers, glasses lifting high in a joyful salute as laughter, clinking glasses, and warm smiles filled the space.

Next, Dorea rose gracefully, raising her glass with a warm smile. "On behalf of everyone here, my deepest congratulations to you both on this wonderful new chapter in your lives. Today, we're celebrating you as a couple, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we can hardly contain our excitement and joy."

She looked between Harry and Natasha, her eyes gleaming. "What a blessing that you found each other. And while that in itself is remarkable, I believe we're even more blessed to know you together, as the pair you were truly meant to be. Watching you two, it's abundantly clear that you were made for one another, and the love you share is as inspiring as it is undeniable."

Dorea paused, her smile growing tender. "In the months and years ahead, there's so much to look forward to, and I want you both to know that we're here for you, supporting you, cheering you on, and celebrating every step of the life you're building together. From today until long after you say 'I do,' we're with you every step of the way."

She lifted her glass a little higher. "So here's to you, Harry and Natasha. May you live, love, and laugh your way through it all. Cheers to this next beautiful chapter—and to all that lies ahead. Let's raise a glass to the happy couple!"

A chorus of "Cheers!" rang out as glasses clinked around the room, a joyful toast to the new journey ahead.

Clint was next, grinning as he raised his glass. "Harry stole Natasha's heart, and now Natasha plans to steal Harry's last name. So, all in all, I'd say things worked out pretty nicely—especially since neither of them ended up in prison along the way. Here's to you both! May you always keep each other out of trouble... well, mostly." The room burst into laughter and cheers.

Then it was Pepper's turn. She smiled slyly as she began, "They say a good marriage is one where each partner secretly suspects they got the better deal. Now, that's going to be tough for these two!" She glanced at Harry and Natasha, adding with a wink, "But I'm sure you'll manage."

After the touching toasts, everyone took turns sharing their own cheers and warm wishes for the happy couple. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and heartfelt smiles. As the celebration seemed to reach a comfortable lull, Yao suggested mischievously, "Well, no party is complete without a song from these two!"

Immediately, the entire crowd erupted in a chant, "Song, song, song, song!"

Amused but slightly embarrassed, Harry and Natasha exchanged a look, both reluctant yet knowing they couldn't say no. Harry finally shrugged with a grin and pulled out a guitar, and Natasha smiled as she added, "Alright, but only if Audrey joins in."

Audrey eagerly agreed, and Natasha leaned in and quietly suggested they perform I Was Made For Loving Youby Tori Kelly and Ed Sheeran. Harry quickly handed Audrey a sheet of music. With Audrey on violin and Harry on guitar, the couple prepared to give their friends and family a performance they wouldn't forget.

As Harry tuned his guitar, a hush fell over the crowd "This is going to be amazing" Yao commented softly. Natasha stood close to Harry, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder as she whispered, "You ready?" He looked up at her with a soft smile, eyes shining with the emotion he could barely contain.

Audrey joined them, nodding as she adjusted her violin, the sheet music propped delicately on a stand. Natasha took a deep breath, gazing around the room at their friends and family, each face carrying warmth, support, and joy. She knew this song, their song, would be her way of showing everyone what Harry meant to her, the love she couldn't quite express with words alone.

As Harry began strumming the opening chords, the room seemed to shrink, leaving only the two of them wrapped in a moment entirely their own. Natasha's voice came out soft but unwavering, each note filled with love that years of combat and loss had only strengthened.

As Harry strummed the opening chords, Audrey joined in on violin, her notes lifting the room, and after a few bars, Natasha took a breath and began singing, her voice soft but filled with unspoken memories and emotions.

"A dangerous plan, just this time"

As the words left her lips, Natasha couldn't help but recall the first time she'd met Harry. It had been in the middle of a mission, where things were not going as planned.

"A stranger's hand clutched in mine"

Harry had stepped into her world like a force of nature, pulling her out of a tight spot with a calm smile and his hand reaching out to hers. Back then, he'd been just a stranger, yet he'd held her hand as if he'd known her forever, grounding her in a way she'd never experienced. It was strange, feeling safe in the grip of someone she barely knew.

"I'll take this chance, so call me blind"

The words felt so true. She had every reason to walk away, to ignore whatever pull she felt toward him. But Harry had shown her a glimpse of a life beyond her guarded walls, and without fully understanding why, she'd chosen to trust him. It had been a reckless, dangerous choice, but one that had changed her life.

"I've been waiting all my life"

As she sang, Natasha realized just how deeply she meant it. All the years she'd spent fighting, hiding, and surviving had led her to this, to him. Harry was the answer she hadn't known she was waiting for, a chance to love and to be loved in return.

"Please don't scar this young heart"

Natasha's voice softened, a hint of vulnerability shining through. Love was foreign, a feeling she was terrified of, and with Harry, the stakes felt impossibly high. She'd seen what loss did to people, and her heart wasn't as unbreakable as she pretended. But as the words left her mouth, she also realized she was asking him not only to love her but to protect her heart, to keep it whole.

"Just take my hand"

With this line, Natasha extended her hand toward Harry, her eyes never leaving his. It was a simple gesture, but one that held a lifetime of unspoken promises. She knew that with Harry, she was ready to take the chance, to dive headfirst into something she'd once thought wasn't meant for her.

"I was made for loving you"

Thor had told her about soulmates, a bond that transcended time and lifetimes, something he said was unmistakable between her and Harry. She'd was unsure of it at first—love was something she thought herself incapable of, a luxury for people who didn't carry shadows like hers. But here, with Harry, she felt a pull that defied explanation. In her heart, she felt it; there was only him.

"Even though we may be hopeless hearts just passing through"

Maybe all this stuff was bullshit. A small smile tugged at her lips as she thought about how unlikely this all was. Her life was built on lies, second chances, and impossible odds. If it hadn't been for sheer luck or fate, maybe they would have never met at all. She wanted to believe that what they shared was more than coincidence, that even without destiny's hand, she would have found him.

"Every bone screaming, I don't know what we should do"

The words felt all too true. She'd lived her whole life resisting closeness, telling herself she wasn't made for anything so fragile as love. Part of her still fought it, a primal fear that whispered she was safer alone. But looking into Harry's eyes, she knew her heart had stopped listening to those fears a long time ago.

"All I know is, darling, I was made for loving you"

In this moment, Natasha let herself believe it wholeheartedly. She was made for him, every scar, every lesson, every small fragment of her life had led her here. It was a terrifying thought, one that left her feeling vulnerable and bare, yet she couldn't deny how right it felt. Here, standing by his side, she was exactly where she was meant to be.

As Natasha finished the first chorus, Harry joined in, his voice warm and steady, carrying a promise within each word.

"Hold me close, through the night"

He thought back to all the moments they'd shared together. Now, here they were, no battles to fight, just each other to hold onto.

"Don't let me go, we'll be all right"

After everything they'd faced, all the fear and sacrifice, he was certain that they could face whatever came next. Together, they were unbreakable.

"Touch my soul and hold it tight"

When he'd met Natasha, he hadn't known how deeply she would shape his life. But with every shared moment, she'd become his purpose, the one who saw past his strengths and flaws alike, straight into his soul.

"I've been waiting all my life"

Harry's heart ached with how true these words felt. She was his partner, the one he'd waited for without knowing it. He'd dreamed of family, of someone who understood the weight he carried and was willing to share it.

"I won't scar your young heart"

He knew Natasha's heart was cautious, fragile beneath her armor. She was afraid to love fully, to allow herself to believe in happiness. But he was ready, with unwavering patience, to help her see that she was safe with him.

"Just take my hand"

In that simple request lay everything he wanted to give her—security, trust, and a future together. With Natasha by his side, he had no doubt they could build a life filled with the love she was still learning to believe in.

As Harry continued into the next chorus, his voice softened, filled with a vulnerability that he rarely shared, his gaze never wavering from Natasha's.

"I was made for loving you"

He recalled what Frigga had told him about their bond, how their souls had been intertwined across lives. It was a truth he felt in his bones—a connection beyond magic or fate. He believed he was put here, in this world, in this life, to love her.

"Even though we may be hopeless hearts just passing through"

He knew they had both led lives filled with darkness and loss, their hearts guarded and bruised. But that was what made this moment so precious. Against all odds, they'd found each other.

"Every bone screaming, I don't know what we should do"

There were still fears and doubts—they'd both seen so much, been through more than most people could understand. But despite all his instincts telling him to protect his heart, his heart knew better; it knew that he belonged with her.

"All I know is, darling, I was made for loving you"

Looking into Natasha's eyes, he felt certain. He wanted nothing more than to spend his life with her, facing the future together, however uncertain it may be.

As Natasha began the bridge, a warmth filled the room. One by one, guests began to lift candles, small lights flickering in their hands, swaying in time with the music. The soft glow illuminated their faces, reflecting the love and support they felt for the couple on stage.

"Please don't go, I've been waiting so long,"

Her voice held a quiet vulnerability. She thought back to all the walls she'd built, the armor she wore to protect herself from letting anyone too close. And yet, Harry had slipped through those defenses, showing her a love that was patient, enduring.

"Oh, you don't even know me at all."

She felt the weight of those words, a bittersweet honesty. There were still parts of her she had yet to share, fragments of her past and fears buried deep. But she was determined now to let him in, to be fully known by him, no matter how long it took.

"But I was made for loving you."

With this final line of the bridge, her gaze softened, her voice full of promise. She knew they had both waited their whole lives for a love like this, and she would spend the rest of her life showing him just how deeply that love ran.

The entire room seemed to hold its breath, captivated by the intimacy of the moment, by the unspoken vows exchanged through each lyric. The candlelight bathed them in a warm glow, as if blessing their union.

With their voices harmonizing, Harry and Natasha sang the chorus one last time, each note filled with the depth of their love and the promise of forever.

"But I was made for loving you,"

Their voices entwined, tender and unwavering, their gazes locked as if no one else existed in the room. A soft smile spread across Natasha's face, her eyes shining with a love she'd once been afraid to embrace.

"Even though we may be hopeless hearts just passing through, every bone screaming, I don't know what we should do,"

The lyrics took on a deeper meaning as they sang, voicing the fears they both knew but had now overcome. In this moment, their hearts spoke louder than any uncertainty, louder than any doubt.

"All I know is, darling, I was made for loving you."

As they held the last note, the world faded away around them, and all they saw was each other. The room felt enchanted, as if the guests were witnessing a vow that transcended words, a love that neither time nor space could diminish.

Audrey played a heartfelt violin solo to close out the song, her melody soaring with emotion and providing a beautiful, lilting backdrop. The sweet notes lingered in the air, capturing the magic between Harry and Natasha as they stood, hands clasped, eyes locked, a universe of shared memories and promises shining between them.

When the final notes faded, the room erupted in cheers and applause. Everyone rose to their feet, celebrating the love that had brought them all together in this special moment. Harry and Natasha, hand in hand, stood at the center of it all, knowing they were exactly where they were meant to be.

Author's Note:

And that's the end for arc 5. I hope you enjoyed the last chapter. I wanted to keep this chapter' very happy happy. Hence I didn't have the confrontation between Tony and Natasha here. I have kept it for the next arc. Having the engagement party in The Rustic Hearth with the duet seemed like a wholesome moment. With Harry's song, then Natasha's song and then the duet marks a musical closure to their love arc too. I hope you all had fun. I had a great time writing this chapter.
