Chapter 43 - CHAPTER 43 — It Doesn’t Let Me Rest

The warehouse smelled like rust and old rain.

Kenji sat on the floor with his back against a concrete pillar, knees pulled up slightly, fingers resting loose against his jeans like he didn't have the energy to hold anything anymore.

It had been hours.

Maybe longer.

He wasn't keeping track.

The city outside moved like nothing was wrong—cars passing, people talking, life continuing without him. That part bothered him more than anything.

Everything was normal.

Except him.

His stomach tightened again.

Not hunger.

Something worse.

He swallowed hard and pressed the heel of his palm against his chest, like he could steady something that refused to settle.

"…stop."

His voice came out low. Dry.

Behind him, his shadow didn't match his position.

It stretched wrong along the wall—longer than it should've been, angled slightly upward like it was climbing instead of resting.

Kenji didn't turn around.

He already knew.

"I said stop."

The shadow twitched.

Not a lot.

Just enough to make it clear it heard him.

Kenji shut his eyes.

That made it worse.

The moment darkness closed in, something moved closer.

Not physically.

But closer.

Like a presence leaning in without taking a step.

His breathing tightened.

He forced it slow.

In.

Out.

In—

The shadow snapped.

A sharp distortion against the wall, like something had yanked it and let go.

Kenji's eyes opened immediately.

"…don't."

Silence.

Then—

A shift.

This time, the shadow didn't stretch.

It rose.

Not fully.

Just enough that it wasn't flat anymore.

Kenji pushed himself up too quickly, stumbling once before catching his balance.

His pulse spiked.

"Not here," he muttered. "Not now."

The shadow held still.

Watching.

He could feel it.

Not see—feel.

Like something standing behind your shoulder, waiting for you to turn around.

Kenji backed away slowly, eyes locked on the wall.

"You don't get to just—move whenever you want."

No response.

But it didn't go back either.

It stayed like that.

Half-wrong.

Half-there.

Kenji exhaled sharply and dragged a hand down his face.

"…I need sleep."

The words felt stupid the moment he said them.

Because the second he lowered himself back down, the shadow shifted again.

Faster this time.

More aggressive.

A flicker—then it snapped back into place like nothing happened.

Kenji froze.

"…yeah."

A hollow laugh slipped out of him.

"Didn't think so."

He leaned his head back against the pillar, eyes open now, refusing to blink for too long.

Minutes passed.

Or seconds.

Time didn't matter anymore.

Every time his focus slipped, even a little—

The shadow reacted.

Not big movements.

Small ones.

Enough to keep him alert.

Enough to keep him from resting.

His body was tired.

But his mind wouldn't shut off.

Because something else was awake.

And it wasn't him.

Kenji shifted slightly, jaw tightening.

"…what do you want?"

Nothing.

No answer.

No voice.

Just that same presence.

Waiting.

Listening.

He swallowed again.

Harder this time.

"…if you're gonna do something, just do it."

The shadow didn't move.

That was worse.

Because it meant—

It didn't need to.

Kenji stared at the wall a little longer before his eyes finally dropped.

His hands were shaking.

He hadn't noticed when that started.

"…this isn't normal."

The words came out quieter now.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Just… tired.

"I died."

A pause.

"I remember that."

His fingers curled slightly.

"I remember nothing… and everything at the same time."

His breathing hitched once.

Then steadied again.

"…and now I can't even sleep."

The shadow stretched just a little—

Like it was reacting.

Kenji's eyes snapped back up.

"…yeah."

His voice dropped.

"I figured."

He didn't try to sleep again.

He just sat there.

Watching it.

Because as long as he was looking—

It behaved.
