Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 The Truth Leak

The rain didn't stop.

It thickened—until the air itself felt heavy, like the sky had lowered and forgotten how to lift again.

Kenji didn't move.

Not because he couldn't.

Because something in him understood—

moving now would be a mistake.

Across the street, the man in the dark coat hadn't advanced.

Hadn't spoken.

But his focus had changed.

He wasn't watching the shadow anymore.

He was watching Kenji.

Really watching him.

"…you feel it," the man said.

Kenji didn't answer right away.

His gaze remained fixed on the ground.

On his shadow.

It hadn't moved.

But something about it felt… delayed.

Like it was waiting for him.

Kenji exhaled slowly.

"…yeah," he said.

"…I feel something."

The man's jaw tightened.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Kenji let out a quiet breath through his nose.

"You've said that a few times now."

No response.

The man's attention sharpened.

"You don't understand what you brought back."

Kenji finally lifted his head.

"I'm starting to think I didn't bring anything back."

Silence.

Rain hammered harder.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then—

the shadow beside him shifted.

Not toward the man.

Not toward the surrounding darkness.

Toward him.

Slow.

Measured.

Kenji felt it before he saw it.

That pressure again.

Inside.

Colder this time.

Not external.

Internal.

His fingers curled slightly.

"…okay," he muttered.

That wasn't normal.

Across the street, the man took a step back.

"You need to return it."

Kenji didn't look at him.

"I don't think that's an option."

"It is."

Kenji shook his head once.

"No."

A beat.

"I don't think it listens to me."

The man's voice dropped.

"…it doesn't."

Kenji's eyes flicked up.

"Then we agree."

Another pause.

Then the man said it—

quiet,

controlled,

dangerous:

"You didn't escape."

Kenji went still.

The words didn't strike.

They settled.

Slow.

"…what?"

The man didn't look away.

"You didn't leave that place."

Kenji frowned slightly.

"I walked out."

"No."

A breath.

"You were allowed out."

Silence.

The rain felt louder now.

Kenji's expression didn't change—

but something behind his eyes shifted.

"…that sounds like the same thing."

"It isn't."

The man's voice sharpened.

"One implies freedom."

A pause.

"The other implies purpose."

Kenji didn't respond.

Didn't move.

Because something inside him—

reacted.

The pressure tightened.

Not pain.

Not yet.

Just—

presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kenji inhaled slowly.

"…you're saying I was sent?"

"I'm saying," the man replied,

"something needed to cross that boundary."

Kenji's eyes narrowed.

"And it used me?"

The man didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The shadow beside Kenji moved again.

Closer.

The darkness overlapped his feet.

His shadow—

shifted.

This time, it didn't correct itself.

It stayed wrong.

Kenji stared at it.

"…that's not mine."

Across the street, the man whispered:

"…no."

Kenji's breathing slowed.

Not out of fear.

Out of control.

"…then whose is it?"

The man didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Because the shadow moved first.

Kenji hadn't moved.

Hadn't even twitched.

But the shadow leaned forward—

like it was stepping ahead of him.

Testing something.

Kenji felt it again.

That pressure.

Deeper now.

Colder.

Closer.

Not beside him.

Not behind him.

Inside him.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"…yeah," he said under his breath.

"…that's definitely new."

Across the street, the man stepped back again.

This time

not controlled.

Fear.

"…it's starting," he said quietly.

Kenji lifted his eyes slowly.

"Starting what?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he looked directly at Kenji—

not the shadow.

Kenji.

For the first time,

like he understood where the problem actually was

"…you need to understand something," the man said.

His voice lowered.

Careful now.

"That thing—"

He pointed.

Not at the shadow beside him.

At Kenji.

"…isn't following you."

Kenji didn't move.

Didn't react.

But something inside him

shifted again.
