"I didn't leave you," I said weakly.
The man studied my face.
"You slowed down."
My stomach twisted.
"You looked at me."
My heart pounded.
"And then you drove away."
The room felt smaller.
Tighter.
Harder to breathe in.
"I was scared," I whispered.
Daniel laughed softly.
"Scared enough to forget someone existed?"
Amara stepped forward angrily.
"She was told no one was hurt."
The man looked at Daniel.
"Tell them the rest."
Daniel crossed his arms.
"You were supposed to die."
The room went completely silent.
My blood ran cold.
"Supposed to?" I whispered.
The man's eyes darkened.
"That night…"
He paused.
"…someone else was supposed to be driving."
A strange feeling crawled through my chest.
Because suddenly this story was getting even darker.
And somehow…
I felt like I was still missing something important.
