Chapter 67 - Chapter Sixty-Seven

The following week was a whirlwind of activity. Posters advertising the charity event, emblazoned with a catchy slogan Celine had come up with 'From Shopping Spree to Giving Spree: Celine & Prince's Charity Extravaganza!' plastered the school hallways. Social media feeds exploded with updates about the event, fuelled by Celine's relentless enthusiasm and Prince's carefully curated posts highlighting the cause. Local businesses, eager for some positive publicity, offered donations and sponsorships.

The day of the event arrived, buzzing with anticipation. The grand hall of Diamond Snow Secondary School buzzed with joyous laughter of excited students, the rhythmic beat of a live band setting up, and the clatter of caterers arranging an extravagant buffet spread. Banners proclaiming 'Celine & Prince's Charity Extravaganza' decorated the walls, while balloons in every colour imaginable bobbed cheerfully from the ceiling.

Celine and Prince, the stars of the show, stood backstage, welcoming the guests as they arrived. Celine, radiant in a flowing blue dress and matching pumps, her hair cascading in waves, greeted everyone with a warm smile. Prince, looking sharp in a well-tailored navy suit, hugged James as soon as he walked in, looking dapper in a black suit. Despite their youth, Celine and Prince undeniably exuded an aura of a perfect couple.

Just then, a group of SS 3 Class A students from Diamond Snow dressed to impress, entered the hall. Among them was Stella, her beauty undeniable even without commanding the entire room's attention. She wore a stunning peach gown that flowed around her. Her dark chocolate hair, styled in elegant curls, cascaded down her back like a luxurious waterfall. A diamond tiara, sparkling under the lights, crowned her head, adding a touch of royalty to her outfit. A simple silver necklace adorned her neck, providing the perfect finishing touch to her elegant outfit. Her smile, genuine and bright, added to her radiance.

The group of classmates made their way through the crowd, greeting acquaintances and admiring the decorations. They eventually reached where Celine, Prince and James stood, stopping to exchange pleasantries.

'Wow, you guys look amazing!' Celine exclaimed, genuinely impressed by their attire.

Stella smiled back. 'Thanks, Celine. You too! This whole thing looks incredible. And you look more beautiful than anyone in this room.'

'Does that include me?' James asked, looking at Stella with a playful glint in his eye.

'Everyone knows you won the Oscar for Ugly Award,' Stella teased. 'If I were you, I'd just pretend I don't exist here,' she said, and they laughed.

'I will marry you then, so that with your beauty and my ugliness we will have ugly-beauty babies,' James said playfully, and Stella made a face, causing the group to laugh again.

'Who would have thought that this extravagant shopping spree that had you guys on the news would lead to something charitable?' James teased both Prince and Celine after a moment of silence. 'Don't tell me you're forced to do this?' he laughed jokingly.

'Honestly, for the first time you spoke reasonably,' Celine rolled her eyes at James. 'But since this is our way out, we will enjoy ourselves and cleanse with charity…' she winked.

'This sounds more like sinning and confessing later,' Prince looked at Celine and said, and they all laughed.

'I was expecting more guests to arrive so that I could go home already. I'm not Mother Teresa…' Celine muttered, glancing around the hall.

Prince squeezed her hand reassuringly. 'Relax, Celine. The whole city's buzzing about this event. Look at the turnout!' He gestured towards the hallway, where a throng of beautifully dressed students, teachers, and local dignitaries were milling about, eagerly waiting for the event to begin.

Just then, the emcee, a charismatic radio personality, took the stage. The spotlight hit Celine and Prince, and the crowd erupted in cheers. A mix of students, celebrities, and business tycoons had come out to support their cause.

The emcee was a striking image of elegance, her presence radiating warmth and confidence. She wore a gorgeous cream custom Dior gown with an elegant halterneck that flowed gracefully to the floor. Her hair, styled in a classic updo with a few loose tendrils framing her face, shimmered with highlights that caught the stage lights. To complete the look, she sported a pair of matching white pumps that added a touch of sophistication.

'Welcome, everyone, to a night unlike any other at Diamond Snow!' boomed the emcee, 'Tonight, we celebrate two remarkable young people who are using their voices to make a difference—Celine Njemanze and Prince Ojukwu!'

The crowd roared again as Celine and Prince stepped onto the stage, hand-in-hand. Celine spoke with an eloquence she was already accustomed to. Her American accent flowed sweetly, captivating and mesmerising.

'Thank you all for joining us tonight,' she began. 'We all know how fortunate we are to be students of Diamond Snow. But there are many children in our city who are less fortunate, who don't have access to the same opportunities and resources. Tonight, we want to raise awareness and funds for the Blossom Orphanage, a place that provides a loving home and education to these children.' Celine's playful smile returned. 'We also want to celebrate the rich culture and diversity of our country. From the bustling farms of Ebonyi to the vibrant communities in the east, there's so much to learn and appreciate from each other.'

Prince spoke next, his voice low but firm. 'We understand that some people may judge us for our recent... extravagance. But we believe that everyone, no matter their background, deserves a chance to shine. And with your help, we can make a real difference in the lives of these children.'

Their heartfelt speeches struck a chord with the audience. Tears welled up in some eyes, while others erupted in enthusiastic applause. The rhythmic clapping echoed through the hall, creating a surge of appreciation that engulfed Celine and Prince. They exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with gratitude for the high turnout and the accomplishment they had achieved so far.

The live performances kicked off, pulsating dance beats filling the hall with joyous energy. Students and guests mingled in animated groups, their laughter echoing amidst the music. Waiters wove through the crowd, offering platters piled high with an enticing mix of dishes—spicy jollof rice, glistening curried goat, suya skewers, pounded yam with egusi soup, akpu with rich oha soup, fragrant Ofada rice with rich stew, fried plantains, peppered snail, moi moi, crispy chin chin, and pepper soup brimming with spices.

A special highlight was the abacha, a delightful mix of shredded cassava, garden eggs, and ugba, generously coated in a tangy dressing of palm oil and spices, and topped with crunchy fried fish and onions, creating a burst of textures and flavours that danced on the tongue.

International flavours joined the spread with aromatic paella, savoury Italian risotto, tender chicken tikka masala, fresh sushi rolls, and rich French coq au vin. A variety of fresh salads added a refreshing contrast, featuring classic Caesar and vibrant Mediterranean mixes. Miniature pastries dusted with powdered sugar and rich chocolate éclairs added a sweet touch, while tropical fruit platters showcased juicy pineapples, mangoes, and watermelon.

The silent auction tables, elegantly draped in plush velvet, buzzed with excitement as guests admired the enticing prizes: a sleek designer handbag, a luxurious spa day, and a weekend getaway to a private island. Adding a touch of local pride, the governor of Ebonyi State donated five hundred bags of rice and other farm produce, all grown in Ebonyi State. Traditional crafts were also on display, each a unique representation of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.

From Ebonyi State, exquisite woven raffia baskets, known for their intricate patterns and durability, stood proudly. Each basket, handcrafted by skilled artisans, was a living legacy of time-honoured traditions passed down through generations. Alongside them, gleaming bronze sculptures from Benin City showcased the kingdom's long history of artistic excellence. The intricate figures, depicting warriors, animals, and deities, whispered tales of a glorious past.

Carved wooden masks from the southwest Yoruba people adorned the tables, their vibrant colours and expressive features capturing the essence of various spirits and ancestors. From the north, beautiful embroidered calabashes from Kano added a touch of elegance, their intricate patterns a tribute to the region's rich textile traditions.

Representing the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria, the display featured stunning beadwork. Multicoloured beads, meticulously arranged in geometric patterns, adorned a variety of items. Exquisite Igbo uli body art designs were painted on calabashes, adding a touch of cultural symbolism. Miniature hand-held fans, woven from raffia palm and adorned with colourful beads, offered a glimpse into the Igbo tradition of craftsmanship.

The silent auction tables, buzzing with excitement earlier, now displayed red 'sold' signs on many items. Guests, their faces flushed with the thrill of bidding and the celebratory atmosphere, compared their purchases with a sense of accomplishment. The governor of Ebonyi State's donation of 500 bags of rice had sparked a mini-feeding frenzy, with several guests engaging in a playful bidding war to secure them all. The final gavel strike for the private island getaway elicited gasps and envious sighs, the winner basking in the spotlight for a moment before disappearing into the crowd.

As the night wore on, the fundraising thermometer climbed steadily, surpassing their initial goal by a significant margin. Celine and Prince, their initial nervousness replaced by a contagious enthusiasm, mingled with the guests, expressing their gratitude for the overwhelming support.

These were just a few examples of the stunning craftsmanship on display, showcasing the diverse artistic heritage of Nigeria. Each bid placed and every donation made played a vital role in supporting the children that needed help the most. While some guests placed competitive bids, others stepped forward with generous direct contributions, underscoring the evening's purpose. Their kindness transformed the atmosphere from mere celebration to one of meaningful impact, creating a ripple of hope for those in need.

The highlight of the night came when Celine and Prince, joined by their friends, took centre stage, performed a lively rendition of Michael Jackson's We Are the World. Celine's voice soared, clear and powerful, harmonising beautifully with Prince's rich baritone. Their friends added their own voices to the chorus, creating a wave of sound that washed over the audience.

The crowd erupted in cheers, many swaying to the music, some even singing along. The lyrics, a powerful message of unity and hope, perfectly captured the spirit of the evening. Celine and Prince moved across the stage, their energy infectious, their smiles genuine. In that moment, they weren't just privileged teenagers or social media stars; they were leaders, inspiring others to make a difference.

By the end of the night, the event had been a resounding success. They had not only raised a significant amount of money for the Blossom Orphanage but also secured funds to sponsor children from different areas to attend school. Celine and Prince's story had come full circle—from a shopping spree that made headlines to a charitable event that shifted the narrative surrounding them. They were no longer just teenagers who overindulged; they were young philanthropists, using their platform for good.

As the final notes of the music faded and the guests began to leave, Celine and Prince stood on the stage, hand-in-hand once again. They were exhausted but exhilarated. This wasn't just about the money they raised; it was about proving that even teenagers could make a difference.

'We did it, Prince,' Celine whispered, a bright smile on her face.

Prince returned her smile, his eyes filled with pride. 'We did, Cece.'

Ms. Adebayo approached them, a proud smile on her face. She was dressed in a stunning, flowing Ankara gown, the vibrant patterns and colours celebrating her Nigerian heritage. The gown swayed gracefully as she moved, perfectly complemented by a matching gele that added a touch of traditional elegance to her ensemble. Her hair, neatly styled underneath the gele, allowed the headwrap to take centre stage. Around her neck, she wore a simple yet elegant beaded necklace, adding the final touch of cultural richness to her appearance. On her feet, she wore matching Ankara pumps, tying the entire outfit together with a touch of sophistication.

'Sometimes,' she said, her voice warm, 'a little mischief can lead to a whole lot of good. You both showed incredible maturity and responsibility in organising this event. I have a feeling this is just the beginning for you two.'

Celine's eyes sparkled with excitement. 'Just the beginning, Ms. A,' she agreed. 'We have some ideas about using our platform to continue supporting education and cultural exchange programs. We'd love to hear your thoughts sometime.' She paused and added playfully, 'We'll also go on shopping spree sometime,' she winked, and both Prince and Ms. Adebayo smiled. 'You can call us the accidental philanthropists, Ms. A.'

Ms. Adebayo chuckled. 'Accidental or not,' she said, 'you've made a real difference. Keep up the good work.'

Celine laughed, a genuine, carefree sound. 'We had a little help from our friends, Ms. Adebayo,' she said, glancing at James and Stella who were enjoying a lively conversation nearby. They were both holding a hand-carved wooden masket they had gotten from the event. 'And from some amazing people like yourselves who decided to take a chance on us.'

Even so, you and Prince were the leaders of this wonderful event tonight, Ms. Adebayo said warmly.

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Celine and Prince to stand together, basking in the afterglow of their success. The night had been a whirlwind, but they had achieved something remarkable. They had proven that even teenagers could make a positive impact on the world.
