Chapter 105 - Chapter 102: Flint Vs Grey-2

Third Person POV

Grey had two different ideas for which Pokémon he wanted to send out next. The referee was already asking both trainers to release their next Pokémon. Although Flint's Hippowdon had gone down first, the rules stated that both trainers would release their next Pokémon at the same time, so Grey quickly realized that arguing about it would be pointless.

The first option was Charmeleon. The main reason for choosing her was that she could use Sunny Day to counter the Sandstorm currently covering the battlefield. While Hippowdon itself wasn't a Rock-type, this was still a Rock-type Gym, and Grey was certain Flint had chosen Sand Stream specifically because he wanted to boost the defenses of the rest of his team. Sunny Day would allow Grey to override the Sandstorm and remove that advantage.

Of course, Exeggutor could also accomplish the same thing, but bringing out Exeggutor immediately would probably be overkill. The second option was Persian, and that choice had its own advantages. Persian could create momentum for Grey, and against most Rock-types Flint could send out, it had multiple ways to exploit their weaknesses. Its incredible speed also gave it the ability to evade attacks while retaliating with its wide variety of moves.

Grey thought about his options for a few moments.

In the end, he decided to go with Persian.

Charmeleon could certainly work, but Grey didn't want to take the risk of bringing her out when he didn't know exactly what Flint had prepared. Persian had a much better chance of adapting to whatever came next, and right now, that flexibility was more valuable.

Both trainers raised their Poké Balls.

"Go!"

Grey released his next Pokémon.

A Persian appeared on his side of the battlefield, landing gracefully on all four paws as its eyes immediately locked onto its opponent.

On the opposite side, Flint released his next Pokémon.

A strange, heavily armored Pokémon emerged.

Barbaracle.

The Rock-type stood firmly in the Sandstorm, its multiple limbs moving slightly as it measured Persian.

Flint looked at Grey and chuckled.

"I really thought you would bring out that Charmeleon. Looks like a bit of my preparation went to waste."

Grey didn't respond, but internally, he felt a wave of relief.

He had made the right choice.

If he had brought Charmeleon out instead, this could have gone very badly.

Barbaracle could attack with both Rock and Water-type moves, giving it multiple ways to exploit Charmeleon's weaknesses. Even Metal Claw, despite being less threatening than its other options, was still something Charmeleon would have to deal with. Against a Pokémon like Barbaracle in the Sandstorm, Charmeleon could have easily found herself in a terrible matchup.

Persian, on the other hand, was a much safer option.

Both Pokémon slowly began measuring each other.

The Sandstorm continued to rage around them. Thanks to its Rock typing, Barbaracle would naturally benefit from the increased Special Defense provided by the sand, making special attacks less appealing.

Fortunately, Persian didn't have to rely entirely on special attacks.

Iron Tail could target Barbaracle's physical defense directly, while Dig gave Persian another way to avoid attacks and strike from below. Its speed also gave Grey plenty of opportunities to force Barbaracle to react rather than allowing Flint to dictate the pace of the battle.

Both trainers prepared themselves.

The next round was about to begin.

———————————————————

"Stone Edge!" Flint commanded.

At the same moment, Grey gave his own command.

"Power Gem!"

Both Pokémon gathered energy simultaneously. A barrage of sharp stones formed around Barbaracle while Persian condensed a glowing sphere of energy in front of her. The two attacks were launched at the same time, colliding directly in the middle of the battlefield.

The impact created a small explosion, with both attacks cancelling each other out.

Neither side gained an advantage.

Without wasting a second, both trainers immediately shifted their strategies. The battle moved from ranged attacks to close combat as both Pokémon rushed toward each other.

"Razor Shell!" Flint ordered.

"Night Slash!" Grey responded.

Barbaracle's blades glowed as it charged forward, while Persian's claws were covered in dark energy. The two Pokémon clashed at incredible speeds, neither willing to back down.

Barbaracle had the advantage of having multiple arms, allowing it to attack from different angles. Its additional Binacles also helped it observe Persian's movements, making it difficult for the cat Pokémon to find an opening.

But Persian had something else.

Speed.

Combining Quick Attack with Night Slash, Persian suddenly accelerated, slipping past Barbaracle's attack and landing the first hit. Before Barbaracle could properly counterattack, Persian immediately followed up by firing a low-energy Water Pulse directly toward Barbaracle's face.

The attack connected.

However, Barbaracle simply endured it.

The Water Pulse clearly hurt, but its sturdy body allowed it to tank the attack without being pushed back.

Both trainers immediately understood the situation.

This was both a good and bad matchup.

Good, because neither side had an overwhelming advantage. Both Pokémon had clear ways to win.

Bad, because both sides had reached the same conclusion.

Overwhelm the opponent with constant attacks.

"Brick Break!" Flint commanded.

"Iron Tail!"

The two Pokémon moved again.

Barbaracle's arm glowed with Fighting-type energy while Persian's tail shined with a metallic glow. The two attacks collided head-on, creating another powerful impact.

However, this time Barbaracle had an advantage.

While one of its arms was occupied fighting against Persian's Iron Tail, its second arm was completely free.

Without hesitation, Barbaracle used the opportunity and swung its other arm toward Persian.

But Persian's reflexes were far beyond what Barbaracle expected.

The moment she realized the incoming attack, her body twisted in midair, barely avoiding the Brick Break. She landed smoothly on all four legs.

However, Barbaracle did not stop.

It continued its pursuit, forcing Persian to constantly move backward while avoiding its relentless attacks.

Flint observed the situation carefully.

Persian was too nimble.

A normal attack wasn't enough.

"Stone Edge!"

At close range, the attack would be much harder for Persian to dodge.

The sharp stones immediately appeared around Barbaracle and launched toward Persian.

But Grey had already anticipated it.

"Thunderbolt!"

Persian had practiced the move enough that she could charge it quickly, and unlike some of her stronger attacks, Thunderbolt did not require much preparation.

Electricity gathered around Persian's body before being released toward the incoming Stone Edge.

The Thunderbolt destroyed the rocks before they could reach Persian, completely cancelling the attack.

The sandstorm continued to batter Persian's body, slowly wearing her down.

Luckily for the cat Pokémon, the weather was almost over.

After this exchange, the sand finally disappeared from the battlefield.

Grey immediately decided to take advantage.

"Water Pulse! Full power!"

Persian gathered all the energy she could and released a powerful Water Pulse toward Barbaracle.

Flint reacted instantly.

"Stone Edge!"

Barbaracle created another wave of sharp stones to block the incoming attack.

But this time, the power difference was obvious.

The Water Pulse crashed into the Stone Edge and began destroying the rocks one by one. The remaining force continued forward toward Barbaracle.

Seeing the attack approaching, Barbaracle used Night Slash.

The dark energy-covered claws cut through the Water Pulse, splitting the attack apart and destroying it.

However...

When Barbaracle looked toward where Persian had been standing...

She was gone.

Even its additional Binacles couldn't find her.

Then suddenly...

The ground beneath Barbaracle shifted.

Persian burst out from underneath.

"Dig!"

The attack landed perfectly.

Barbaracle was caught completely off guard as Persian struck it from below, creating an opening.

Not wanting to waste the advantage, Persian immediately followed up.

"Iron Tail!"

Her tail glowed once again as she prepared to land another powerful hit.

But Barbaracle had already recovered.

This time, it managed to dodge.

And before Persian could retreat...

"Brick Break!"

The attack connected.

Persian had committed too much to landing another hit, and that greed gave Barbaracle the opening it needed.

The Fighting-type attack struck Persian directly, sending her flying backward.

However, Grey had already reacted.

"Water Pulse!"

Even while being thrown back from the Brick Break, Persian fired a Water Pulse from her mouth.

The attack hit Barbaracle directly in the face while it was still recovering from the previous exchange.

Both Pokémon were sent flying in opposite directions.

Persian crashed onto the battlefield roughly.

Grey immediately noticed the problem.

Persian's lack of defensive power was becoming a major issue.

She could deal incredible damage and move around opponents, but she couldn't afford to take many direct hits.

On the other hand, Barbaracle was also beginning to show signs of exhaustion.

The constant attacks from Persian were taking their toll, and without the sandstorm boosting its defenses anymore, the repeated Water Pulses were starting to hurt significantly.

Grey decided it was time to push forward.

"Thunderbolt! Strong style!"

Persian gathered all the remaining energy she had and released a massive wave of electricity.

Barbaracle reacted quickly.

"Stone Edge!"

A wall of sharp rocks formed in front of it.

But this time, the electricity was too powerful.

The Thunderbolt destroyed the Stone Edge completely and struck Barbaracle head-on.

The super-effective attack caused serious damage, forcing Barbaracle to stagger backward.

Persian was panting heavily.

She had pushed herself close to her limit.

Seeing this, Barbaracle realized this was its chance.

It charged forward.

"Brick Break!"

Persian tried to evade.

For a while, she managed to avoid the incoming attacks through pure speed and agility.

But exhaustion was beginning to affect her movements.

Then...

Her foot slipped.

The area beneath her had been weakened earlier when Hippowdon used Dig, leaving the ground unstable.

That single mistake was enough.

Barbaracle immediately took advantage.

Its arm connected directly with Persian's face using Brick Break.

The impact sent Persian crashing down.

But even then...

She refused to fall without fighting back.

With whatever strength she had left, Persian gathered electricity one final time.

"Agile Thunderbolt!"

A smaller but faster burst of electricity shot toward Barbaracle.

The attack connected.

Barbaracle staggered from the impact.

But Persian had nothing left.

The cat Pokémon finally collapsed.

The referee raised his flag.

"Persian is unable to battle!"

Grey immediately recalled Persian.

"Good job, Persian."

Despite the loss, Grey smiled.

————————————————-

Grey decided not to waste any time after recalling Persian. The battle had already taken a lot out of both sides, and with Flint's remaining Pokémon still unknown, there was no point in giving his opponent any unnecessary time to prepare.

"Cloyster, you're up."

The Shellfish Pokémon entered the battlefield and immediately noticed its opponent.

Barbaracle.

The moment Flint saw Cloyster appear, his expression slightly changed.

"Just great..." Flint thought.

"Why does this kid have a Cloyster now instead of just a Shellder? And he still has that Exeggutor waiting in the back as well."

He looked at the battlefield carefully.

"This match is mostly over unless my next Pokémon are strong enough to handle this. But I can't exactly push the rules too much either. A Gym battle is still supposed to be a challenge, not a complete wall for a challenger."

Flint sighed internally.

"Let's see what we can do here."

The battle resumed.

"Stone Edge!"

Barbaracle immediately launched a barrage of sharp rocks toward Cloyster.

Grey didn't hesitate.

"Ice Counter Shield!"

Cloyster immediately started spinning rapidly while using Rapid Spin and Aurora Beam together. The combination created a rotating layer of ice around its shell, forming the same defensive technique Grey had developed with Shellder, except now it was even stronger.

The incoming Stone Edge collided with the frozen barrier.

Instead of breaking through...

The rocks shattered against the icy shield.

Flint's eyes widened slightly.

Even after seeing Grey's previous battles, he was still surprised by the creativity of the young trainer.

Using existing moves together to create entirely new strategies wasn't something every trainer could do.

"Impressive..." Flint muttered.

Grey immediately took advantage of the opening.

"Cloyster, Icicle Spear!"

Cloyster continued spinning as it fired the attack.

Because of the rotation, the Icicle Spears didn't just fire forward.

They launched in every direction.

An omnidirectional barrage of ice spikes covered the battlefield.

Barbaracle tried to defend itself, but multiple Icicle Spears connected, forcing it backward.

"Now use Spikes!"

Cloyster slammed spikes across the battlefield, covering multiple areas around Barbaracle.

Flint immediately understood what Grey was trying to do.

He wasn't just attacking.

He was controlling the battlefield.

"Stealth Rock."

Barbaracle responded by setting up its own hazards, surrounding Grey's side of the field with sharp floating rocks.

Both trainers had created dangerous conditions where every future switch would come with consequences.

But neither side backed down.

"Stone Edge again!"

Barbaracle once again created a powerful barrage of rocks and sent them toward Cloyster.

Grey calmly responded.

"Water Pulse."

This time, the difference was obvious.

Unlike Persian's Water Pulse, which relied more on surprise and versatility, Cloyster's Water Pulse carried overwhelming power behind it.

The attack smashed through the Stone Edge one by one.

The rocks shattered apart under the pressure of the water before the attack continued forward toward Barbaracle.

Flint reacted quickly.

"Night Slash!"

Barbaracle swung its claws forward, cutting through the incoming Water Pulse and dispersing it.

But the moment the water disappeared...

Barbaracle's eyes widened.

Behind the attack were multiple Icicle Spears following right behind it.

The previous move had been a distraction.

Barbaracle immediately used Night Slash again, cutting down as many Icicle Spears as possible.

But there were too many.

One after another, the ice attacks struck Barbaracle.

The accumulated damage from the hazards, the previous attacks, and Cloyster's relentless pressure finally became too much.

Barbaracle staggered.

Then collapsed.

The referee raised his flag.

"Barbaracle is unable to battle!"

The crowd erupted.

Another Pokémon had fallen.

Flint recalled Barbaracle while looking toward Grey's side of the field.

The kid was proving to be far more troublesome than expected.

He had already forced Hippowdon into a difficult battle, and now Barbaracle had been defeated without even being able to properly overwhelm Cloyster.

Flint glanced toward his remaining Pokémon.

He had originally planned to keep the battle within a reasonable difficulty level.

After all, this was still a sixth badge Gym battle.

But looking at Grey now...

That might not be enough.

"Looks like I might have to raise the bar a little."

Flint smiled slightly.

Author's Note: Truth be told I could have given barbaracle shell smash but that would be too difficult of a gym fight dont get me wrong grey wants a tougher gym fight but as its his first circuit run even gym leaders a bound my some rules , the current battle is already at a 6-7 badge level despite being for a 5th badge for a trainer. Yes Grey also has a cloyster that can shell smash but thats an advantage grey has due to his prep and training of his pokemon so is the case with exeggutor , both are strong because they trained for it , one has a king gene and the other is a monster in training , even flint realises this and will try to keep the battle at peak 7 gym badge level going forward but even he knows if grey uses exegguttor its over for him. But this is also for mutiples reasons that being greys entire team has some way to counter rock type including charmeleon who has metal claw and the rest having fighting or some super effective type . That said the last part will have most of the remaining battles.
