He struggled.
The moment fear seized him, his body reacted without thinking. His arms pushed wildly against the water, his legs kicked, his whole body twisting in desperation. But the more he moved, the deeper he sank.
The lake seemed to pull him down.
The currents twisted around his body, dragging him lower toward the enormous eye staring up at him from the darkness below.
His chest burned.
Air refused to come.
Water pressed against his lungs as his strength slowly began to fade. His movements grew slower, weaker, each attempt to escape draining the little energy he had left.
Then he stopped.
For the first time since he had fallen into the water, he stopped struggling.
If something was coming for him, then running blindly would not help. He did not understand the thought fully, but instinct guided him to face what lay ahead instead of wasting the last of his strength.
His body went still in the water.
He tried to steady himself, preparing to confront whatever creature hid beneath the lake.
The cold water made it difficult. His naked body trembled from the chill, and the pressure around him continued to push him downward. Without air, his lungs began to ache violently. A thin stream of blood slipped from his nose and drifted upward in the water.
Still, he forced himself to remain focused.
He turned slightly, trying to position his body to face the eye again.
But when the water swirled once more, the eye was gone.
The massive golden iris that had filled his vision had vanished into the depths as if it had never been there.
For a moment he could not understand what had happened.
Before he could react, darkness began creeping into the edges of his vision. His chest tightened painfully. His body had reached its limit.
His eyes closed.
Just before his consciousness faded, he felt something touch him.
A grip.
Something large wrapped around his arm and pulled.
But his mind had already begun slipping away. He could not react, could not even open his eyes to see what held him.
Then—
A sudden impact slammed into his chest.
Pain exploded through his ribs as something struck him with tremendous force. Instantly, water burst from his mouth as his body convulsed violently.
Air rushed into his lungs.
His eyes snapped open.
He coughed hard, rolling onto his side as more water spilled from his throat. His chest rose and fell rapidly as he dragged breath after breath into his burning lungs.
For a long moment he lay there gasping.
When he finally lifted his head, he realized where he was.
The island.
The same small island he had seen before falling into the lake.
He was lying on its shore, completely naked, his body damp and trembling in the breeze.
He looked around slowly.
No one was there.
The cave entrance stood quietly a short distance away, its interior hidden in darkness. The lake stretched calmly around the island, its surface smooth and undisturbed.
There was no sign of the enormous eye.
No sign of whatever had grabbed him.
No sign of the force that had struck his chest and brought him back to life.
He slowly leaned back and stared at the sky.
His mind replayed the moments beneath the water.
The swirling currents.
The massive golden eye.
The feeling of something grabbing his arm.
And that powerful strike against his chest.
None of it made sense.
After a while he turned his head toward the lake again.
Just then, a sound caught his attention.
A bird had landed nearby.
It hopped along the ground, making short sharp noises as it moved. The small creature chirped repeatedly, the sound echoing softly across the island.
He watched it carefully.
The sound was strange.
He had heard many noises in the forest already, but he had never tried to create one himself.
He opened his mouth and tried to copy it.
Nothing came out.
He closed his mouth again and tried once more.
Still nothing.
The bird continued chirping, tilting its head from side to side.
Curious, he moved quickly and caught it in his hands before it could fly away. The small creature struggled weakly, flapping its wings, but he held it firmly.
As it chirped again, he noticed something.
Inside its body, something moved.
A small vibration beneath the feathers. A subtle shift that happened every time the sound came out.
He stared closely.
Then he released the bird and began experimenting with his own body.
He moved his arms.
His legs.
His stomach.
Nothing produced the same effect.
Then he paid attention to his breathing.
Air entered his body through the two small holes on his face. It also passed through his mouth.
He paused.
Why were there two ways to breathe?
He had never questioned this before. His body had simply done it without thought.
Now he became aware of it.
The skin in front of his eyes moved when he blinked.
His chest expanded when he inhaled.
Air passed through his nose… and through his mouth.
He stood there quietly, observing these things as if discovering them for the first time.
What were all these actions?
Why was his body doing them without his permission?
He did not understand.
But he felt something inside him — a strange pressure that had been building since he woke up on the island. The confusion, the fear, the questions he could not answer.
He decided to push all of it out the same way the bird did.
Through his mouth.
He inhaled deeply.
Then he forced everything outward.
A sound erupted from his throat.
It was not a word.
It was not even a proper voice.
It was a roar.
The sound tore through the forest like a violent wave, echoing across the lake and into the surrounding trees. Birds exploded into flight. Animals scattered in every direction, fleeing from the terrifying noise.
The roar continued for several seconds before fading into the wind.
When it ended, the forest had fallen completely silent.
He stood there, breathing heavily.
Somewhere deep inside, he realized something had changed.
He had found a way to make sound.
A way to speak.
As that realization settled in his mind, another sound reached his ears.
Crack.
He turned his head toward the cave on the island.
Crack… crack…
The noise grew louder.
Crack.
Something inside the cave was breaking.
