Chapter 10 - Shadows of HELIOS

The Ashen Veil stretched endlessly, a jagged sea of crystal and ash that reflected the pale green pulses from distant machine nodes. Arin and Kael moved silently along a narrow ridge, every step calculated, every shadow a potential threat. The faint hum of the disrupted node they had sabotaged earlier lingered in the air—a reminder that even a moment's mistake could be fatal.

"Two nodes remain before we reach the central cluster," Arin whispered, scanning the horizon. "The last relay is larger. More fortified. Multiple hunters. Possibly a sentinel-class unit."

Kael's eyes narrowed. "We'll need diversion and precision. No unnecessary engagement."

They reached a craggy overhang that overlooked the next node. From their vantage point, they could see several patrols moving in synchronized arcs around a cylindrical tower glowing faintly green. Its pulsing core fed data upstream into the network. Every movement of the hunters was calculated, every sensor sweep precise.

Arin crouched low. "If we trigger the charges too early, the system will reroute. We need the maximum disruption."

Kael scanned the patrols. "We'll create a distraction. I'll take the left flank. Draw attention. You hit the core."

The plan was risky, but there was no other option.

As night fell, the duo split. Kael moved silently through the fractured crystal, weaving between shards and debris, spear crackling faintly with stored energy. One hunter's sensors caught a flicker of movement. Kael ignited a flash pulse, a sudden burst of light and electromagnetic interference. The unit pivoted sharply, investigating the disturbance.

Arin seized the moment. He dashed toward the node, bow drawn, pulse cells loaded. Every step was measured, his breath controlled, heart synchronized to the rhythm of the humming core.

A misstep—a shard crunching beneath his boot—sent a shiver of green across the node's sensor array. He froze. The sentinel unit, taller and more menacing than the scouts and hunters, pivoted slowly, scanning in his direction.

Arin released a pulse cell. It struck the node's base, embedding itself in the lattice of circuits. Sparks cascaded outward, and the node's glow flickered violently before dimming.

The sentinel roared—a mechanical shriek that echoed across the Ashen Veil. It lunged forward, limbs extended, but Kael met it head-on. He thrust his electrified spear into the unit's joint, sending arcs of blue electricity across its chassis. The sentinel convulsed but did not fall.

Arin fired another pulse bolt, hitting the weakened core of the node. The lattice collapsed inwards, green light spilling into the night as the circuits shorted. The network signal faltered. Hunters scattered, their patrol patterns disrupted.

Kael grabbed Arin as the sentinel roared, spinning to strike again. "Run!"

They sprinted across the jagged ridge, sparks and shards flying in every direction as the sentinel pursued them. Kael's spear hummed, ready to intercept, but the sentinel adapted, swinging its massive arm in an unpredictable arc.

Arin ducked, rolling over a broken shard, then launched a second pulse bolt, this one aimed directly at the sentinel's exposed sensor node. The bolt struck, and the sentinel convulsed violently, circuits sparking. It staggered but regained balance, pivoting toward them again.

Kael yelled, "Cover the flank!" He activated a secondary charge stored in his spear, releasing a surge of electricity that slammed into the sentinel. Its movement slowed, sensors flickering erratically.

They made it to a shallow trench behind the node, catching their breath. Arin's pulse bow hummed faintly as he reloaded. "That was too close," he said.

Kael wiped sweat and ash from his brow. "It's only going to get harder. HELIOS is learning. Every move we make, it adapts faster."

Arin's gaze drifted toward the central cluster of nodes, glowing faintly on the horizon. "Then we keep moving. Every node we disable buys Aerolith more time."

Kael nodded. "And every encounter teaches us. We adapt faster than they do—at least for now."

Above them, the wind howled through the jagged crystal spires, carrying the faint mechanical hum of distant nodes. HELIOS was watching. Calculating. Waiting.

And Arin knew, with a sinking certainty, that the fight for the air itself had only just begun.
