Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: the disaster

A primal thrum reverberated in my chest, a low hum of unease. Were these truly monsters that clawed their way into existence, or merely figments of a collective nightmare given form? I had to know. A quick mental flicker through my abilities, a swift inventory, brought forth a new, unsettling entry: "Beast tamer." The name itself felt like a bad joke, a whimsical, impossible wish from a forgotten childhood, yet it was undeniably there, nestled amongst the more mundane.

Then, a guttural boom tore through the air, vibrating through the very ground beneath my feet. It was the unmistakable herald of something emerging near the gate, that perpetually open maw spewing forth horrors. Drawn by a mix of fear and strange compulsion, I edged closer. In the flickering, chaotic light, the figure of Riven Schwarz materialized in the gloom, his hands – or something unnervingly similar – clenched around the neck of a monstrous entity, choking the life out of it. His eyes, even from this distance, held a chilling, glacial intensity.

"Is he mad? Or just… a different breed of sane?"

The thought formed, unbidden, in my mind.

My instinct, honed through a lifetime of trying to blend in, was to disappear. To become one with the crumbling debris and shadows. But as I focused on Riven, another beast, smaller but no less ravenous, lunged from Riven's blind spot. Before I could even fully process the impending danger, a shout, raw and unthinking, burst from my lips:

"Hey! Behind you!"

It was a desperate, automatic warning, born of pure reflex, and immediately regretted.

Riven, however, didn't need the warning. As my words still echoed, he moved with terrifying efficiency, intercepting the lunge. He didn't just defeat the monster; he seemed to absorb its very essence, then force it to unravel. It was a grotesque, explosive disintegration, a shower of unidentifiable biological matter that was both horrifying and profoundly disgusting to witness.

Before I could even properly process the lingering stench of ozone and viscera, Riven was moving. Not towards the gate, not towards another threat, but directly towards me. A wave of primal panic washed over me, but my feet seemed rooted to the spot. Back, back, back… until the unyielding cold of a broken wall pressed against my spine. Riven's glare, now impossibly close, felt like a physical blow, stripping the air from my lungs.

And then, just as the pressure became unbearable, a translucent window materialized in my peripheral vision: [Fear Resistance Activated]. The stark, almost clinical text was a jarring intrusion, a digital anomaly in a moment of raw, visceral terror. A jolt of unsettling recognition shot through me, a whisper of a forgotten memory. Why is this so familiar? The question burned, a perplexing riddle in the midst of chaos.

Riven's voice, when it finally cut through the tension, was like ice.

"Go to the evacuation place. Why is an F-rank like you here?"

The designation, "F-rank," struck me with the force of a physical blow. The insult, the sheer audacity, made a furious heat rise through my veins. F-rank? How dare he! I wish I could just plant my fist on his condescending face right now! He thinks he's some grand hero from a storybook? You're no 'Yoo Joonghyuk from a novel,' you infuriating jerk! The silent, internal tirade was a torrent of indignation, a desperate attempt to regain some semblance of control over a situation spiraling out of my grasp.

Without another glance, without a single word of dismissal, Riven turned and walked away, leaving me standing alone in the monster-tainted twilight, abandoned. An F-rank. The resentment festered, a bitter taste on my tongue. Honestly, I should just walk up to him, punch him square in the face, kick his leg, and slap him hard. The childish, violent fantasies offered a momentary, futile catharsis against the overwhelming dismissal.

Riven's final warning hung in the air, a cold, sharp echo in the ruins. His gaze, devoid of warmth, pierced through me like shards of ice, a silent, potent threat. He didn't need to elaborate; the message was clear: stay away from the dungeon. Then, as abruptly as he had appeared, he was gone, leaving only the oppressive silence and the lingering chill of his presence.

My heart, however, beat to a different drum. "Stay away" was a challenge, not a command. Curiosity, a dangerous companion, tugged me deeper into the crumbling labyrinth of what was once a city. Each shadow seemed to lengthen, each debris pile to shift, hinting at secrets unseen. I pushed Riven's words aside, a stubborn defiance simmering beneath my skin.

Then I saw it. Tucked amongst a cluster of fallen girders, a small creature blinked up at me. Its fur, the color of twilight, was matted with dust, but its eyes held a surprising glint of intelligence, framed by ears that twitched with every distant creak. It was... cute, in a feral, dangerous way. A wave of irrational tenderness washed over me, overriding any sense of caution. Slowly, cautiously, I extended a hand, drawn by an instinct older than logic.

A low growl rumbled from the creature's throat, a sound disproportionate to its size, sending a shiver down my spine.

"Woah, woah... I'm not gonna hurt you, buddy," I murmured, my voice soft, attempting to soothe.

The growl intensified, but this time, it wasn't just the little beast. A deeper, richer vibration resonated through the very ground, a sound that bypassed my ears and went straight to my gut. It was impossibly close, a guttural roar that dwarfed the creature in front of me. My breath hitched. Heavier. Louder. And, undeniably, right behind me.

Every muscle in my body screamed to freeze, to become invisible. I willed myself not to move, not to twitch, not to even breathe too loudly. But then, a persistent, buzzing nuisance, a large, iridescent beetle, landed squarely on my outstretched hand. My instincts, honed by years of urban annoyances rather than monstrous threats, took over. I flinched, pulling my hand back sharply.

It was enough. A colossal shadow fell over me, and the air erupted with the whoosh of a massive claw sweeping down. My feet, betraying my frozen mind, launched me sideways in a desperate, undignified scramble, narrowly dodging the crushing impact.

"What...just happened did I survived that...?"

The fierce monster was running towards me I was about to hit with those terrifying claws but Riven Slice them like a meat

"Do I have to repeat? Stay away and go to evacuation center you little Brat"

The word Little brat echoes through the hall

That was kind of rude To be honest

"I kind of lost.."

As I said it with a lie Rivens gaze narrows and point his sword at me His gaze remains cold distant, and dark

" If you want live then leave"
